  2. #India - Backyard nutrition gardens- For family nutrition and income

In rainfed agriculture, where farm livelihoods are highly vulnerable to climate vagaries, alternative farm based enterprises go a long way in providing the necessary support for #farmers to remain in farming. Backyard kitchen garden is one such enterprise which meets multiple needs like food, income and nutrition security, besides empowering women.

    September 2025

Excerpt: "A key intervention was to help farm women raise kitchen gardens in their backyard. These kitchen gardens are meant to increase #FoodDiversity in the diets of the participating families and reduce reliance on the market for introduced vegetables. Each interested household was provided with a kitchen garden kit containing around 10-13 types of vegetable seeds. By raising kitchen gardens, women were able to harvest many types of seasonal vegetables.

"During 2023-24, kitchen garden kits with 13 different varieties of vegetables were given to 70 group members. For those who had sown seeds early in the season, owing to excessive rains, the seeds didn’t germinate. But around 40% of the women who took up late sowing, could harvest vegetables from the gardens. Women have done #composting with kitchen waste, garden clippings, and dry leaves to create rich organic #compost. This compost is used to fertilize the garden beds. They also prepared organic liquid fertilizers like #Panchagavya and #Jeevamruta to increase immunity and promote plant growth. To manage pest and diseases, they used #NeemOil spray as #NaturalPesticides. Organic #mulch, such as straw and dried leaves, were applied around plants to retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil health. Each of the households produced vegetables like #brinjal, #bhendi, #tomato, #gourds, #cucumber, #radish and green #vegetables. On an average each household produced vegetables worth Rs.2500-3500 in a season.

"Again, 2024 has been a year of heavy rainfall for Dharwad district. Untimely rains caused havoc, damaging crops. Farmers had to face crop losses and in such a situation around 25 women farmers raised nutrition qardens in their backyard. Each household produced vegetables worth Rs.3000-4000 in a season. Kitchen gardens served as a boon to these families facing #FoodShortages due to crop loss."

  3. Rising Food Prices Are Likely to Continue, Thanks to #Trump’s Trade Wars

Wholesale prices on fresh and dry vegetables rose nearly 40 percent, and soon consumers will feel the pinch

By Peter Wade, August 17, 2025

"As wholesale and consumer prices have risen, so has the demand on food banks, which were already hit hard with shortages due to federal budget cuts earlier this year and actions at the so-called Department of Government Efficiency. The “One Big Beautiful Bill” congressional Republicans passed last month also cut Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (#SNAP) benefits by $186 billion, meaning more people may be turning to increasingly strapped food banks to make up for the loss in food assistance."

"When Rome turned its armies against its own citizens

The Roman Republic and later the Empire, saw several instances where military force was used against its own citizens, usually due to internal political struggles, civil wars, or revolts

    - The nature of Roman politics: Power struggles and rivalries among powerful individuals and factions were common throughout Roman history, especially during the late Republic and periods of imperial instability.

    - The evolving role of the military: As the Republic transitioned into an Empire, the army's role shifted from primarily defending the state's external borders to also playing a decisive role in internal power struggles and securing the position of ambitious leaders.

    - Moral and legal implications: Using armies against Roman citizens or within Roman territory was often considered a violation of tradition and law, but ambitious leaders were willing to defy these constraints in pursuit of power."

  9. Lessons from the Late Roman Army

    June 25, 2014

"As the Empire grew, successive leaders, now styled as Emperors widened the veteran benefits until the mid third century A.D. After this troubled period of revolts, barbarian attacks and #EconomicDownturn and collapse, Roman authorities gradually reduced pensions and lengthened the period of active service necessary to receive full credit for service. This appears to have been done to reduce taxes for wealthy Romans living in the provinces."

  14. "Social unrest was common in ancient Rome, and the Senate often faced uprisings of the plebeian class that proved difficult to suppress. Particularly in the late Republic, assemblies of the people were so liable to escalate into rioting and city-wide chaos that the Senate was forced to enact legislation which 'authorized the use of an #ArmedPosse' (Nippel, p.51) for Roman magistrates and patricians who might be swept up in the chaos that so often followed the passing of a new law.

"When this measure proved insufficient — 'bodyguards' could be readily bribed, and often took the law into their own hands — the urban cohorts were established to deal with civil disorder. But even these experienced veterans could be caught off guard and unable to deal with extensive rioting.

"Indeed, it is almost impossible for the modern mind to underestimate the social unrest and destruction so essential to the Roman modus vivendi, especially in times of political turbulence.

"Riots in Rome had many causes: #FoodShortages; #HighRent costs for houses and apartments that were liable to sudden and catastrophic collapse; political tensions. Even the undesired result of a chariot race or a sub-standard theatre show could incite city-wide violence."

  19. Did a touch of that old classic, doomscrolling. Quademic underway, had Covid and Noro, so that’s two Pokémon down. H5N1 is creating egg shortages, and there are truckers on #tiktok commenting that their food cartage contracts are being cancelled. Then apparently there was talk of a depopulation event in Gaza, by the Cheeto himself. Plus there’s a killer storm over Quebec that is bringing hurricane force winds to the Great Lakes. Talk about #FAFO. All at once. Kaboom. #uspol #FoodShortages

  20. Plus, #ClimateCrisis, #pandemics, #ecosystem #collapse #FoodShortages & so on, are much harder to respond to when we pre-occupied by idiots trying to make things worse.
"How Trump’s “Mass Deportation” Plan Would Ruin America
It would be brutal, costly, & likely illegal.
Undocumented Immigrants Pay Billions of Dollars in Taxes. [it turns out]
Deporting 7 million workers would “reduce national employment by an amount similar to that experienced during the Great Recession.” GDP would immediately contract by 1.4 percent, & , eventually, by 2.6 percent. In 20 years, the US economy would shrink nearly 6 percent—or $1.6 trillion. Trump’s plan would lead to a dire shortage of low-wage workers, which would “bring on a recession while reigniting inflation.
a 50 percent decrease in the farm labor supply could result in a 21% increase in the prices of hand-picked crops. “If [immigrant workers] just disappeared overnight, I do not think that we in this country could grow enough food.”"

    By JOHN MYERS JR.
    Updated 4:28 PM EDT, July 8, 2024

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — "Jamaicans will contend with food shortages in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, which is estimated to have destroyed over $6.4 million in food crops and supporting infrastructure, officials in Jamaica said on Monday.

"Floyd Green, Jamaica’s agriculture minister, said preliminary assessments indicate significant damage to crops including vegetables, tubers such as yam and cassava, and fruits like breadfruit, ackee, mangoes and bananas, which are popular food sources.

"He said livestock and fishing sectors were also impacted significantly by the record-breaking storm that unleashed tumultuous winds and rainfall as it traveled westward just off Jamaica’s south coast last week on route to the Cayman Islands, Mexico, and Texas.

"'We have seen about 85% of our bananas and our plantain lines go down in Portland and St Mary,' Green said after visiting farms in the southern parish of St Elizabeth.

"Yam farmers in southern Trelawny have asked for assistance as they report significant damage to their operation."

  27. Report: Global #wine production worst in 62 years due to 'extreme #climate events'

The 10% decrease is the world's steepest drop in wine production in 62 years, according to the industry report. The #grape harvest was the worst reported since 1961.

    By Mike Heuer, UPI

    Published Apr 29, 2024

"#Fires, #droughts and other conditions commonly associated with a changing global climate greatly contributed to making the world's 2023 wine production the worst in 62 years, industry officials have reported.

"A 'State of the World Vine and Wine Sector in 2023' report released Thursday by the France-based International Organization of Vine and Wine cites 'extreme environmental conditions' as a primary cause of a 10% drop in global wine production in 2023.

"John Barker, director of the wine organization, said 'drought, #ExtremeHeat and fires, as well as #HeavyRain causing #flooding and #fungal disease across major northern and southern hemisphere wine production regions" were primary factors in the decrease in global wine production.

"The 10% decrease is the world's steepest drop in wine production in 62 years, according to the industry report. The grape harvest was the worst reported since 1961.

"A 26% drop in wine production in #Australia and a 23% drop in #Italy made those nations the worst in 2023. #Spain lost more than 20% of its wine production, and #Chile and #SouthAfrica each recorded 10% drops."

Sigh...

  29. Well, that rules out growing guarana. "Note: It is toxic to cats and other animals." And it's not easy to grow.

"Obtaining seeds is not easy as this is a rare plant. What is more challenging is that most Guarana seeds are viable only for about 72 hours (after which they decay). These seeds may require up to 80-100 days to form the first leaflets. The seeds have to be fresh, or they won’t germinate."
