The world inches toward catastrophic climate events: ‘Bigger shocks are on the way’
The risks have been known, and building, for over 150 years
By PETER PRENGAMAN
Updated 9:55 AM EDT, August 24, 2026NEW YORK (AP) — "In the opening scene of American writer #KimStanleyRobinson ’s 'The Ministry for the Future,' a #HeatWave combined with a breakdown of the electrical grid in India kills 20 million people. The devastation causes the world’s nations to unite to combat #ClimateChange .
"Scientists have long warned that the world will experience more intense #ExtremeWeather events like #heatwaves, #storms, #floods and #droughts. But what once seemed like the realm of fiction is now discussed as a possibility, even an inevitability.
"Warning about an 'extreme of extremes' or the 'Other Big One,' a play off the California reference of a big future earthquake, can be fraught. After all, nobody can say for sure when a weather catastrophe may happen. But in the last few years, the planetary ingredients needed for a massive disturbance have been building. And alarm is growing.
'The risk is that people just think you are exaggerating,' said #DanielSwain, a climate scientist with the California Institute for Water Resources. 'It’s the ‘Boy Who Cried Wolf’ problem. Sometimes wolves are real. If it’s outside the door, wouldn’t you want to know?' "https://apnews.com/article/climate-change-disaster-big-one-threat-5b062254250a759483c94376d32ae478

UPDATE: Medicare freeze beneficiary secretly donates $2.5 million to #Trump #ballroom
By Judd Legum
"Earlier this year, Popular Information broke the news that #ExtremityCare – a company that sells bandages to Medicare for thousands of dollars per square inch – donated $5 million to #MAGAInc., President Trump’s super PAC, on February 24. Six days later, Trump blasted a pending Biden administration rule that would have barred Medicare from covering Extremity Care’s products.
"The Biden rule was initially scheduled to take effect in February 2025, but was delayed by the Trump administration until April 13 as part of a blanket regulatory freeze. On April 11, 40 days after Trump’s post, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the rule would be delayed until at least January 1, 2026, allowing Extremity Care to continue charging Medicare for its products.
"As that deadline approaches, Extremity Care has secretly donated $2.5 million toward the construction of a new White House ballroom, a top priority for Trump. The White House publicly released a list of donors last month, but Extremity Care was not included. According to The New York Times, the company was permitted to donate anonymously."

The president’s power to deploy troops domestically: an explainer
By Kelsey Dallas
Updated on Oct. 28 at 9:16 p.m.Since June, President Donald Trump has ordered several #NationalGuard deployments within the United States, often against the wishes of the Democratic governors of the states where troops are being sent. The resulting legal battles have put a spotlight on the president’s authority to federalize troops and use them domestically. How far, exactly, does this power extend?
"Overview:
This document explores President Trump's authority to deploy National Guard troops domestically, highlighting legal frameworks, recent deployments, and ongoing court challenges. Presidential Authority and Legal Framework
- The Constitution grants Congress the power to call forth the militia, while the president commands troops under Article II.
- The Militia Act of 1792 allows the president to call troops for domestic insurrections or to enforce U.S. laws.
- Trump has invoked 10 U.S.C. § 12406, which permits federalizing National Guard troops to address foreign invasions, rebellions, or law enforcement needs.
- Legal challenges focus on whether conditions in cities like Los Angeles, Portland, and Chicago meet the criteria for federal troop deployment. Recent Deployments and Legal Challenges
- Trump has deployed National Guard troops to cities with Democratic governors, citing rising crime rates and the need for federal law enforcement support.
- Legal disputes have arisen, particularly in Chicago, where a judge ruled the deployment unnecessary, and similar rulings occurred in Los Angeles and Portland.
- The 9th Circuit Court has paused lower court orders blocking deployments, emphasizing deference to presidential authority in determining troop necessity. Key Legal Cases and Acts
- Martin v. Mott (1827) established that a president's decision to call up militia cannot be questioned, though interpretations vary today regarding judicial review.
- The Posse Comitatus Act (1878) limits military involvement in domestic law enforcement, which has been a point of contention in recent deployments.
- The Insurrection Act allows broader presidential authority to deploy troops without the limitations of the Posse Comitatus Act, enabling action when law enforcement is impracticable. Future Implications
- Trump has suggested he may invoke the Insurrection Act if other legal avenues fail.
- The Supreme Court's upcoming ruling on the Chicago deployment could clarify the extent of presidential power under Section 12406 and its implications for future troop deployments."Full article:

Pentagon readying thousands of Guard ‘reaction forces’ as U.S. mission widens
Alex Horton and David Ovalle , The Washington Post
Thu, October 30, 2025 at 3:43 PM EDTExcerpt: "The mandate, along with the growing presence of federal and immigration enforcement officers, suggests further military deployments within the United States could grow in size and scope. The deployments, which President Donald Trump has described as a bid to quell violence and crime, have infuriated Democratic governors in multiple states, who have fought the president’s deployments through litigation.
"The Defense Department did not respond to a request for comment. A defense official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to describe military planning, said the Pentagon is 'revising plans for the employment of [National Guard Reaction Forces] to guarantee their ability to assist federal, state and local law enforcement in quelling civil disturbances.' The Guardian earlier reported details of the documents."

#Climate takes its toll on the ‘#cherry capital of the world’
The erratic weather adding to the troubles of Michigan's cherry growers is impacting #farmers everywhere.
Ayurella Horn-Muller & Izzy Ross
December 17, 2024"Everyone who works the land knows they’re at the mercy of the weather, but even by that measure this was a challenging year for Michigan’s cherry farmers. Growers throughout the state, which produces one-fifth of the nation’s sweet cherries and about 75 percent of its tart cherries, have struggled with mounting losses. By the time the season came to a close over the summer, as much as 75 percent of the state’s sweet cherry crop was lost. Although tart cherry production for northwest Michigan was up almost 40 percent over last year, the quality of the fruit declined.
"Many growers are adapting to the difficult market and changing climate, planting different varieties or embracing high-density orchards with trees packed more closely together, an approach that makes them easier to harvest while lowering costs and improving quality. For Isaiah Wunsch, CEO of the farm that bears his name, the key to survival is 'not putting all of our eggs into one basket.'"
