I know that authorities blame beekeepers who post #QueenBees through the mail, or moving infected hives when told not to - but - I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the spread of the mite is agricultural #sabotage from outside Australia.

There are countries who would love to see our crops fail & either step in to replace our produce on the international markets or sell theirs to us.

    Ditto #birdflu, #fruitfly.

  2. Apparently it’s #FlyDay or #DrosophilaDay in honour of the day Drosophila melanogaster, the common fruit fly or vinegar fly line w1118 (the first variant with the white eyes) was isolated, so enjoy some drosophila #sciart! This print highlights the model organism with a ring of 5 of the different eye colour genetic mutations.

A species of fly (the taxonomic order Diptera) in the family Drosophilidae, D. melanogaster is used as a model organism 🧵1/2

Hundreds of scientists and citizen scientists from around the world have mapped out more than 50 million connections in the tiny #fruitfly brain, a step toward one day producing an intricate map of the human brain that will aid in understanding and potentially treating numerous health conditions such as Parkinson’s, binge eating, depression and substance abuse.

The scientific milestone, the most detailed survey of an adult animal brain to date, helps to show the mechanisms involved as a fruit fly assembles, then acts on the impressions of the world that come through sight, smell and other senses.

  22. #CapeElizabethMaine farms shut down #strawberry fields due to #FruitFly infestation

"This particular spotted wing fruit fly first came to Maine in 2011, but farms typically don't see them in large numbers until late August and early September.

"'Strawberries usually escape,' Handley said. 'We don't see it in high numbers until we're pretty much done with strawberries. It's the people who are growing fall #raspberries and late-ripening #blueberries that usually have the big issue with this one.'

"Handley is a vegetable and small fruit specialist.

"He believes the relatively #MildWinter, combined with an unusually hot June, led to the early rise of fruit flies in the greater Portland area."

  23. The simple brain of the fruit fly is invaluable to neuroscientists studying information processing and task management, and a new, incredibly detailed map of fruit fly brain connections now makes that easier.

“The #FlyLight Project produces large anatomical data sets and highly characterized collections of GAL4, LexA and Split-GAL4 drivers in order to enable the visualization and precise manipulation of individual cell types in the #Drosophila nervous system.”
