Native People Rush to Feed the People
by @bsnorrell.blogspot.com, #CensoredNews, November 5, 2025
"The #BlackfeetNation brought in a load of produce from the #YakamaNation, and #FortPeck announced buffalo distribution. #GilaRiver is giving tribal members $1,000 in hardship funds, as the government shut-down continues.
"Blackfeet Tribal Council Member Mike Comes At Night brought in a load of produce from the Yakama Nation in Washington State for the Blackfeet Nation in Montana. 'We made it home safely from the Yakama Nation with a generous load of produce for the Blackfeet People. I am honored, as a Councilman, to serve our people. I’ve traveled hundreds of miles to help
bring food home, and at the end of the day, I know I am doing my job. I also want to thank all the farmers who helped us with this food — may the Creator bless them and their families," Comes at
Night said."#FortPeck's #Assiniboine and #Sioux Tribes are distributing buffalo meat, and gathering groceries, after declaring a state of emergency in Montana.
"In California, the #Yurok Tribal Council approved $300 food assistance cards for Yurok because of the disruptions in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program #SNAP, and #CalFresh benefits, due to the federal government shutdown.
'Our goal is to help our most vulnerable citizens get through this challenging time,' said Yurok Chairman Joseph L. James, who said the tribe is working to mitigate the hardships on families from
the federal shutdown."In #Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the #CherokeeNation announced a $6.5 million response package. This includes cash payments of up to $185 per individual Cherokee Nation citizens on SNAP. It also includes over $1.25 million to support food banks and other non-profit food programs.
"The Cherokee Nation's expanded emergency declaration includes tribal members who are currently on SNAP living anywhere in the United States. The Cherokee Nation has over 470,000 citizens living in all fifty states. Cherokee Chief Chuck Hoskin, Jr. said the Cherokee's network of 27 “at-large” organizations located in urban areas could access grants of $5,000 to address local food shortages.
"The #GilaRiverIndianCommunity, south of #Phoenix in #Arizona, is distributing $1,000 hardship payments to all adult tribal members, regardless of whether or not they are SNAP recipients.
"Gov. Stephen Roe Lewis said, 'We want to make sure that, as a sovereign nation, we take care of our members during this unprecedented shutdown.'
" 'I hope that this payment brings some peace of mind during this time of uncertainty at the federal
level.' "Source:

#Maine #GovernorJanetMills releases $1.25 million to help #FoodBanks respond to #SNAP losses
Mills also has not ruled out calling a special session of the Legislature so roughly 170,000 Mainers don’t lose federal food assistance.
by Randy Billings. October 30, 2025
FALMOUTH — "Gov. Janet Mills said Wednesday that her administration is releasing an additional $1.25 million in funding for food pantries and anti-hunger programs in a bid to keep nearly 170,000 low-income Maine families from losing assistance during the federal government shutdown.
"Mills said the funding would be distributed through the #GoodShepherdFoodBank and the #AreaAgenciesOnAging to support programs such as #MealsOnWheels and other anti-hunger organizations.
" 'When the federal government fails, Maine will not,' Mills said in a written statement. 'When challenges arise, Maine people step up.'
"Mills is using $1 million from the governor’s contingency account and the John T. Gorman Foundation is providing $250,000. The Portland nonprofit noted that 55,000 children could lose food assistance.
"Heather Paquette, president of Good Shepherd, said in a written statement that the funding will help support nearly 600 food pantries and other partner organizations across the state.
" 'Our partners on the front lines are facing an overwhelming need for food right now and these funds will go to work immediately to help ensure everyone in Maine has access to the food they need to feed themselves and their families during this uncertain time,' Paquette said.
[...]"Some other states are also announcing emergency funding for food banks and food assistance programs in anticipation of the loss of SNAP benefits. #Minnesota, for example, has announced $4 million for food assistance programs, and #NewYork is committing $30 million."

#Maine among dozens of states suing #Trump administration over #SNAP funding
by Russ Reed, October 30, 2025
AUGUSTA, Maine — "Maine's attorney general is part of a coalition that sued the Trump administration for suspending the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.
"In their lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Office of Management and Budget and their respective secretaries, 23 attorneys general and three governors claim the USDA does not have the authority to suspend SNAP.
" 'Forty-two million Americans, including 169,000 Mainers, are going to go hungry this Thanksgiving because the Administration is simply refusing to use the billions available to prevent this,' Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey said in a statement. 'It is unconscionably cruel and unlawful.'
"The coalition suing the Trump administration said that on Oct. 10, the USDA sent a letter to state SNAP agencies saying there will be insufficient funds to pay full November SNAP benefits if the government shutdown continues.
"According to the coalition, the USDA has access to billions of dollars in SNAP-specific contingency funds appropriated by Congress in the event of a government shutdown. The coalition also claims the USDA has funded other programs with emergency funds during the shutdown, but has refused to fund SNAP.
"The Maine Department of Health and Human Services (#DHHS) announced on Oct. 21 it would not receive November's SNAP funding.
"According to Maine DHHS, nearly 12.5% of the state's population receives SNAP benefits. State health officials also said the rate approaches or surpasses 20% in five of Maine's 16 counties: #Androscoggin, #Aroostook, #Piscataquis, #Somerset and #Washington.
"Maine DHHS also said nearly 75% of the state's SNAP households include at least one working adult, more than half include a person with a disability, 43% include an older adult and more than one-third include children. The average monthly SNAP benefit for a family of four in Maine is $572, according to DHHS.
"Maine DHHS shared the following information for the state's SNAP recipients:
- November's federal SNAP benefits cannot be issued until the government shutdown ends or until new guidance is provided by the USDA's Food and Nutrition Service.
- At this time, SNAP benefits already loaded onto EBT cards remain available for use to purchase food.
- Applications, renewals and other updates continue to be accepted and processed by Maine DHHS during the federal government shutdown.
- SNAP recipients are encouraged to sign up for e-noticing through My Maine Connection, which provides the fastest access to updates and notifications.
- Recipients should ensure that contact information, such as their phone number and mailing address, remains current with Maine DHHS.
"For help finding information on other available resources, call 211 or text your ZIP code to 898-211. You can also visit 211Maine.org. When the government shutdown ends, more information will be available about the future of federal SNAP benefits.
"Maine DHHS will share updates as soon as additional information becomes available."Joining Frey in the lawsuit are the attorneys general of #Arizona, #California, #Colorado, #Connecticut, #Delaware, the #DistrictOfColumbia, #Hawaii, #Illinois, #Maryland, #Massachusetts, #Michigan, #Minnesota, #Nevada, #NewJersey, #NewMexico, #NewYork, #NorthCarolina, #Oregon, #RhodeIsland, #Vermont, #WashingtonState and #Wisconsin. The governors of #Kansas, #Kentucky and #Pennsylvania are also part of the lawsuit."

#GovernorJanetMills calls on #Trump to tap emergency reserves to fund #FoodStamps
by Christopher Burns, October 30, 2025
Excerpt: "Mills and the other governors said in their letter that the anti-hunger program prevents low-income Americans from having to make 'impossible choices' between eating or taking medication, between eating or heating their homes, between eating or going to the doctor.
" '#SNAP lifts families out of poverty by allowing them to spend money that would otherwise have been used for food on rent, heat, or health care,' they wrote."

Choosing to let kids go hungry
by Judd Legum, Rebecca Crosby, and Noel Sims
Oct 29, 2025"The official website of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (#USDA) claims that on November 1, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will run out of funding. The USDA asserts that Democrats are blocking funding to secure 'health care for illegal immigrants' and funding for 'gender mutilation procedures.'
"All of these claims are false.
"Around 42 million Americans — including 20 million children — rely on the SNAP program to avoid going hungry.
"But 'the well' has not 'run dry' on SNAP. The program has a reserve of about $6 billion that could fully fund SNAP for several more weeks. The USDA’s current position is that these funds 'are not legally available to cover regular benefits' and can only be used to provide nutrition assistance in response to a national disaster or other emergency.
"This, however, directly contradicts guidance that the USDA issued on September 30 which explicitly states that contingency funds can be used for regular benefits (emphasis added):
" 'In addition, Congressional intent is evident that SNAP’s operations should continue since the program has been provided with multi-year contingency funds that can be used for State Administrative Expenses to ensure that the State can also continue operations during a Federal Government shutdown. These multi-year contingency funds are also available to fund participant benefits in the event that a lapse occurs in the middle of the fiscal year.'
"This guidance has been removed from the USDA website now that the Trump administration has decided that withholding the funds is politically advantageous."

#SouthernMaine - #USM Student, Staff and Faculty
Oakhurst Campus #FoodPantry
"The Oakhurst Campus Food Pantry provides essential resources to the USM community to fight food insecurity and meet the basic needs of students, faculty, and staff using a self-assessed need model.
"We believe individuals should have the autonomy to determine their current level of need and be empowered with accessible, equitable, and inclusive resources to alleviate and eliminate the need.
"We distributed over 10,900 lbs of food to the USM community in 2022
"There is no paperwork to fill out or expectation to 'prove' your current need in order to access the pantry; all you need is your current #UniversityOfMaineSystem (#UMS) ID. We do not limit how often you can access pantry resources.
"We offer a wide range of food (non-perishable, cold, and frozen), household, and personal goods. Shop in-person at our Portland campus location or submit a pre-order online, available for pick-up in #PortlandME, #GorhamME, and #Lewiston-#Auburn Campus.
"The Pantry has experienced a steady increase in need over the last 18+ months as reflected in our data; resources distributed, spending to stock pantry items, and the number of people being served. Pantry regulars include undergraduate and graduate students, domestic and international students, and university staff and faculty. What was once supplemental for many people, has become a resource they regularly depend upon."

Rising Food Prices Are Likely to Continue, Thanks to #Trump’s Trade Wars
Wholesale prices on fresh and dry vegetables rose nearly 40 percent, and soon consumers will feel the pinch
By Peter Wade, August 17, 2025
"As wholesale and consumer prices have risen, so has the demand on food banks, which were already hit hard with shortages due to federal budget cuts earlier this year and actions at the so-called Department of Government Efficiency. The “One Big Beautiful Bill” congressional Republicans passed last month also cut Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (#SNAP) benefits by $186 billion, meaning more people may be turning to increasingly strapped food banks to make up for the loss in food assistance."

Protesters deliver coffin to GOP congressman’s front door in mock funeral procession, wild video shows
July 31, 2025
"More than two dozen protesters were captured on video last week delivering a faux coffin and flowers to the Wisconsin home of House Administration Committee Chairman #BryanSteil, R-#Wisconsin.
"The unwanted visitors, dressed in black and carrying cowbells, walked up the congressman’s private driveway in what appeared to be a mock funeral procession, before dropping a cardboard coffin prop with an epitaph at his front door.
"Former Walworth County Democrat Party Chairwoman Ellen Holly was identified in the video footage posted to social media allegedly walking up to Steil’s front door, along with several other constituents from previous protests.
"Prior to the '#DeathOfDemocracy' funeral procession, sponsored by the Southern Wisconsin Grassroots Network and Working Families Party, an organizer could be heard on a Facebook Live video saying, 'We’re not going to hang out here because we’re not going to invite the police to come and ask questions, and say, ‘What are you doing here, blah, blah, blah.’ We’re just going to get out of town.'
"Following the demonstration, protesters could be seen walking across Steil’s front yard, forgoing the sidewalk, and commenting on photo opportunities in front of the home.
"A photo of the coffin and epitaph at the front door was later posted to Facebook by another group involved. One commentator asked for the lawmaker’s home address.
"This incident has been reported to U.S. Capitol Police (#USCP). It is unclear if any of the #protesters are facing criminal charges.
" 'It’s disappointing that Democrat leadership and the radical left resort to these type of tactics,' Steil told Fox News Digital. 'I remain committed to my work to get this country back on track and will not be deterred by their threats.'
"Ravi Mangla, National Press Secretary for #WorkingFamiliesPower, told Fox News Digital the incident was less concerning than Steil’s policies."

#Florida considers easing #ChildLabor laws after pushing out #immigrants
A new law under consideration in the state Legislature would roll back child labor laws to make up for a dwindling labor pool.
By Ja'han Jones
March 27, 2025, 12:15 PM EDT"As Florida officials enable Trump’s #MassDeportation policies, lawmakers in the state are looking to children to take on some of the jobs that have typically been done by immigrants.
"Making its way through the state Senate is a new law, Senate Bill 918, that aims to loosen child labor laws and allow teenagers to work overnight shifts.
"As CNN reported: 'The state’s legislature on Tuesday advanced a bill that would loosen child labor laws, allowing children as young as 14 years old to work overnight shifts. If the new law is passed, teenagers would be able to work overnight jobs on school days. They are currently prevented from working earlier than 6:30 am or later than 11 pm per state law.'
"#SB918 also 'includes a number of changes including eliminating working time restrictions on teenagers aged 14 and 15 if they are home-schooled and ending guaranteed meal breaks for 16 and 17 year olds,' CNN reported.
"Florida Gov. #RonDeSantis backs the law and has defended the idea of teenagers and college students working these jobs. DeSantis also explicitly linked the effort to the loss of immigrant labor. Speaking about the consequences of state verification laws at an event with border czar #TomHoman, the governor said, 'Yes, we had people that left because of those rules, but you’ve also been able to hire other people. And what’s wrong with expecting our young people to be working part-time now?'
"In recent years, several states — many of them led by #Republican governors — have rolled back child labor laws. This map from the Economic Policy Institute illustrates the spike in states rolling back these laws from 2021 to 2024. Back in 2023, for example, #Arkansas Gov. #SarahHuckabeeSanders signed a bill that made it easier for companies to hire children without getting consent from their parents. One month earlier, The New York Times published a bombshell report about the exploitation of immigrant children in #factories operated by some of the most well-known companies in the U.S.
"That story should have spurred a nationwide push to strengthen child labor laws. Instead, states like Florida are going in the opposite direction, weakening such laws in part to deal with the fallout from the conservative movement’s demonization of immigrants. They’re essentially using child labor to paper over the gaps left by their draconian immigration policies.
"#Project2025, the far-right playbook for Trump’s second term, specifically calls for rolling back #HazardRegulations around child labor. The text claims, 'Some young adults show an interest in inherently dangerous jobs' and argues that 'with parental consent and proper training, certain young adults should be allowed to learn and work in more dangerous occupations.'
"Even as child labor laws are being rolled back, the Trump administration is working to gut social services, including funds that help provide school lunches to children and programs, like the supplemental nutrition assistance program, that help feed poor families. And if those cuts stay in place, they may leave American families with few alternatives to sending their children to work to keep food on the table."
