Nutella is now making a variety with peanuts. It will be made in a completely separate facility, but it’s no longer a guaranteed safe food when out and about. If vendors offer both varieties at fairs and such, that’s not safe for my kid. Dammit. #FoodAllergies

@arisummerland @the beyond budget, it's a matter of most of the frozen versions of premade foods like that have allergens for me in them & this has not decreased but increased in frequency through the years, so with this I don't have to worry about needing to grab out my benadryl later.

Unknown food allergies suck but unknown spice or seasoning allergies are so much worse. seasonings are so small and so often added or removed from any recipe.. ☹️

Science got #PeanutAllergies all wrong – until the scientific method got it right
By Meg Tirrell, November 3, 2025
Excerpt: "It was a question Dr. Gideon Lack asked often, when giving lectures to fellow allergists and pediatricians on the topic of food allergies: How many doctors in the room had a patient allergic to peanuts?
"Normally, 'virtually every doctor would have put up their hand,' Lack said. Peanut allergy is one of the most common food allergies, affecting more than 2% of US children, with a similar prevalence in the United Kingdom, where Lack was practicing.
"But at a lecture in Tel Aviv, Israel, about 25 years ago, the audience’s response took Lack by surprise. Only two or three out of about 200 raised their hand.
" 'I said, ‘Wait, this doesn’t make sense,’ he recalled recently. 'I was practicing in London, which has a big Jewish community, and I was seeing a high frequency of peanut allergy amongst Jewish children who share similar ancestral background.'
"Lack and his colleagues’ investigations into why, which played out over the next 15 years, led to last month’s remarkable finding that the incidence of peanut allergies in the US – after a precipitous rise – appeared to have fallen dramatically.
"It turned out that the guidance parents and pediatricians – and Lack himself – had been following, to avoid giving peanuts to babies and young children to try to prevent the development of dangerous allergies, was completely backward.
" 'By thinking we were protecting them, we were actually causing the problem,' Lack told CNN.
"The story of how he and his colleagues proved that was the case is a primer in the scientific process.
‘Mother, father, Bamba’
"There’s a joke in Israel that the first three words babies learn are 'mother,' 'father' and 'Bamba,' Lack said – for the peanut puff snacks that Israeli parents give babies when they’re very young.
'They’ve sort of become a national snack,' he noted, pointing out that the joke is actually 'a truism.'As he had conversations with the doctors there, as well as parents of young children, 'They all told me one very clear thing: ‘We give peanut snacks to our babies from between 4 and 6 months of age.' "

Getting ready for Halloween? 🎃👻🍬
Candy is great, but for kids with food allergies, managing allergens at every turn can feel like a minefield, and passing up treats can cause feelings of exclusion.
Consider joining the Teal Pumpkin Project! Put out a teal pumpkin and have non-food alternative treats available for any trick-or-treaters who may have food allergies. 🧡🖤🧡

Good news for people with food allergies!
CA just passed a law requiring restaurants with at least 20 locations to disclose allergens on their menus! It goes into effect July 1, 2026.
It's progress in allergy awareness, and maybe the benefits will go beyond CA, like if a national chain prints menus to disclose allergens in CA, maybe the same menus will be used in other states too.

So I have been #plantbased for 17 years. I was #vegan for 7 or 8 of those years, but I had to go back to being #vegetarian due to food allergies. I limit/ethically source eggs and dairy as much as possible...anyways. Thanks to Trump, the FDA has halted dairy safety tests. This has motivated me to try a little harder to go back to veganism. I'd love some healthy meal ideas if you have any! (I'll handle the allergy substitutes, DW) #foodallergies #uspol

Look, if you're going to invite my family for a meal & you know my kid has food allergies, when you say:
"Please bring your own food for him, since I can't commit to having more than 1 thing safe for him to eat."
What I hear is:
"I can't be bothered to accommodate your child's food allergy, it's too inconvenient. Maybe he just shouldn't come."
And then I wonder, why are you inviting us if you don't want us to feel welcome? WHAT IS THE POINT?! 😠

Anaphylaxis needs to be taken much more seriously than it is.
Epi is great - but it’s only buying you time. Biphasic reactions can be lethal.
Also - especially if you have MCAS - make sure to learn the various ways anaphylaxis can present.
It doesn’t always involve the airway.
This was (in my opinion) a preventable death. It was an egregious disregard for Dominique’s life to suggest she take photos before going to get medical care.
Even “if” you think your reaction isn’t progressing quickly - it could change in an instant.
You should never delay medical attention
If you’re new to anaphylaxis and/or new to MCAS - I highly recommend learning the various ways it can impact your body.
I didn’t realize I was having anaphylaxis the first time it happened to me. I thought it was the flu.
I had diarrhea & vomiting, sore throat, fever and bone pain.
I finally went to ER after three days of suffering not because I suspected anaphylaxis - but because my throat was so sore I couldn’t keep fluids down.
The triage nurse took one look in my airway, stabbed me with an epi pen and whisked me into a code room.
My “sore throat” was actually swelling
My vomiting and diarrhea was classic GI anaphylaxis - and I was also having significant cardiac symptoms.
Thankfully I got medical care in time - and the team who treated me explained what to look for in the future.
Many of us think of wheezing, hives, hoarseness and throat closure when we picture an anaphylactic reaction.
In reality - it can spare the airway AND the skin. It can impact your gut, your heart and your reproductive organs.
In fact - my doctors can actually tell when I’m going into anaphylaxis by the changes in my EKG (highly recommend reading about Kounis Syndrome if your MCAS causes cardiac issues)
When it comes to anaphylaxis - treat early & get to hospital. Make sure you always have an epi pen (or two) with you and check regularly to make sure they haven’t expired.
If you’re unsure if you’re in anaphylaxis - go to ER to be certain.
Had I waited much longer my throat would have closed
Lastly - take people’s allergies seriously. In MCAS we don’t always know what the trigger will be - but when people do know what they’re allergic to - we need to be cautious and ensure they aren’t exposed
If we took allergies more seriously - Dominique would still be with us

"A fired Disney employee allegedly altered menus to change allergy markers"
FFS! People can die if they eat the wrong thing.

This is equivalent to firing a gun at random. While the probability of hitting someone is low, it is not zero.

I wonder if it's the increased use of #glyphosate, or perhaps other pollutants (#microplastics? #pfas). Other theories include #VitaminD deficiency (not enough outdoor time?), and lack of exposure to common microbes (again, not enough outdoor time).
Why the World Is Becoming More Allergic to Food
The frequency of food allergy has increased over the past 30 years, particularly in industrialised societies.

"We know there are lower rates of allergies in developing countries. They are also more likely to occur in urban rather than rural areas.
"Factors may include #pollution, dietary changes and less exposure to #microbes, which change how our #ImmuneSystems respond."
