By Kehinde Wiley (born 1977), “Shantavia Beale II,” 2012, oil on canvas, 60x48 inches, private collection. #blackart #blackartist #blackartists #oilpainting #painting
From the Saint Louis Art Museum: “Kehinde Wiley’s vibrant paintings actively engage with the traditions of European art. In his work, Wiley replaces historical depictions of white figures with images of contemporary African Americans, Africans, and people of the African diaspora. His work is widely recognized for calling attention to significant absences and erasures in Western art history, exposing the lack of representation of black individuals in figurative painting.”

Your art history post for today: by African-American artist Charles Ethan Porter (1847–1923), Floral Still Life, ca. 1880-1890, oil on canvas, 16 1/8 × 20 3/8 × 13/16 inches (41 × 51.8 × 2 cm), Detroit Institute of Arts. #ArtHistory #blackart #blackartists #blackartist #BlackHistory
Information on the artist from the National Gallery of Art: ‘In 1881 Porter decided to travel abroad to continue his development as an artist…
Less than two years into his time in France, Porter’s money ran out. He wrote to Mark Twain, asking him for help. His letters to the writer are the only known first-person accounts from Porter. On April 4, 1883, he wrote:
Now I am aware that there are a goodly number of my Hartford friends and others who are anxious to see how the colored artist will make out, but this is not the motive which impresses me. There is something of more importance. The colored people—my people—as a race I am interested in, and my success will only add to others who have already shown wherein they are capable the same as other men.
Conscious of his place in an art world dominated by white men, Porter was eager to show what he, and other Black artists, could do.’

"Untitled," Edward Mitchell Bannister, 1883.
American-Canadian painter Bannister (1828-1901) was a free-born black man who became a significant figure in African-American intellectual circles of his time, as well as being a prominent abolitionist.
He was a member of the group called the American Barbizon School, which focused mainly on peaceful, pastoral landscapes painted from the life. This style fell out of favor late in his life, and by the time he passed away he was largely forgotten. He had significant financial issues when he passed, and some noted with a bit of bitterness that after his death he was the subject of a memorial exhibition and other notoriety that he should have had while alive.
In the 60s, his work was rediscovered and reappraised, and he's now viewed as one of the great Black American artists.
From the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC.

"Portrait of the Artist's Mother," Henry Ossawa Tanner, 1897.
Tanner (1859-1937) was the first Black American artist to win international fame and acclaim, & they were well-deserved.
The son of an AME bishop, Tanner was born & raised in Pittsburgh. He received artistic education at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he was trained by Thomas Eakins, & worked with Robert Henri, a founder of the Ashcan School of painting, as well as others, who all remained his lifelong friends.
Finding racism and prejudice at home in the US, Tanner moved to Europe where he found acceptance, & where he lived the rest of his life, except for a few visits home.
Sarah Elizabeth Tanner (1840-1914) was born in Winchester, VA, but details of her early life are unclear; she may have been born to free people, or born into slavery and escaped via the Underground Railroad. She did become a respected missionary and religious worker, and raised seven children who all became successes in one way or another.
The portrait seems a riff on Whistler's famous painting of his mother, but here Tanner presents a warmer tone, although to me she looks sad.
Happy Portrait Monday, and Happy Black History Month!

"Country Doctor (Night Call)," Horace Pippin, 1935.
I've talked about Pippin (1888-1946) before; he was a self-taught Black American artist who took up art as a sort of therapy after being injured in WWI. He painted scenes of everyday Black American life, and what he lacked in formal training, he made up for with passion, depth, a remarkable eye for design, and a flair for storytelling and depicting people's lives.
Here we have a scene in a wooded area in the midst of a snowstorm....but a man is slowly leading a horse, pulling a wagon, through the storm. It's not just a mere depiction of a winter scene, but a tribute to the resilience and dedication of a rural doctor, trudging through the storm to someone in need.
Pippin's most popular work are his depictions of Black life, many drawn from his childhood. He also did religious paintings and some historical paintings, mostly of his WWI experiences, but also a noted depiction of John Brown going to his execution, based on descriptions from his grandmother, who witnessed it. I find his work delightful.
From the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

My mind is still on gratitude. One thing I am grateful for is music, especially song. Your art history post for today: by African-American artist Charles White (1918-1979), Folksinger (Voice of Jericho: Portrait of Harry Belafonte), 1957, ink and colored ink with white additions on board, 52 x 34" (131.8 x 86.5 cm), Museum of Modern Art, New York. #arthistory #blackart #blackartist #blackartists

Excerpt: ‘Through stolen moments and carefully cultivated images, photography is a powerful medium for preserving memory, strengthening connection, and imagining new realities. It continues to teach us new lessons in resistance, solidarity, and agency. “The work that was done by artists and photographers before, during, and after the Black Arts Movement establishes a strategy of community engagement,” says Brookman. “It is that engagement that allows communities to define themselves and also to engage people in new forms of looking.”’

"The Blue Tiger," Horace Pippin, c. 1933-37.
Pippin (1888-1946) was a self-taught Black American artist who took up painting after losing an arm in WWI.
While he never really subscribed to any school of art, he's generally credited as a Modernist, although I generally regard him as a Naive, but in the best way, as someone whose style developed from his personal passions rather than an academy.
His work often depicted Black American domestic life, but also depicted historic scenes (his first known painting is of his last memories of the battlefield; another notable painting is of John Brown going to his execution), religious themes, and various symbolic works.
At the time, a blue tiger was a symbol for something unattainable, and a bear represented the wilderness. But many feel that this painting is a symbol of racial conflict. Sadly we have nothing from the artist himself to hint at his intention, but there are other paintings that directly address racism and prejudice.
From the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

On the first Tuesday of every month The Weavers are weaving the values of their ancestors into the world we share today. Hosts #LisaSockabasin and #NancyLaCoote explore #Wabanaki values and how these values are lived (or not lived) today.
"On the second Tuesday of each month, #ReturningTheLand is hosted by USM professor Dr. #DavidLowry, the founder of the #IndigenousPeoplesTrust—an initiative calling for justice and the return of Indigenous land.
"The third Tuesday of the month features Dr. #IdellaGlenn, the Vice President of Equity, Inclusion, and Community Impact at USM with her show: Building USM’s Beloved Community. Unspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Beloved Community, Dr. Idella Glenn sits down with members of the community to foster and embrace the all-#inclusive spirit of USM.
"And on the fourth Tuesday of each month, #VoicesAndVisions: The #Podcast is an #Artisttalk series that features #IndigoArts Alliance’s alumni artists in residence, highlighting their similarities, creative #intersections, distinct voices, and their residence experience. Each episode is a conversation between two artists while they were in residence at Indigo Arts Alliance."

Your art history post for today: by Barkley L. Hendricks (1945-2017), "Steve," 1976, magna, acrylic, & oil on linen, 72 × 48 in. (182.9 × 121.9 cm), Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. #blackart #blackartist #blackartists
From Swann Auction Galleries, April 2, 2015: ‘Art historian Richard J. Powell has described how both the style and substance in Steve caught the attention of New York Times art reviewer Hilton Kramer's attention at the 1977 ACA gallery exhibition Four Young Realists. Kramer wrote that with Steve, Hendricks "produced a tour-de-force" and "as an added note of audacity, he paints into the reflections of the (figure's) mirrored sunglasses two little cityscapes and what may be a miniature self-portrait of the artist himself at work. It's all quite stunning." This reflection of Hendricks's New London studio in the sunglasses occurs in other works from the period, including his diptych Twins, 1977.’

This was an eye opening lecture on why we (I) need to lean-in more deeply on #BlackCulture as a source of humanizing #blackpower. #blackpoets #blackartists #blackscientists

Your art post for today: by Jonathan Green (b. 1955), “The Wedding,” oil on Masonite, 47 1/2 x 47 1/2 in, photo: Leland Little Auctions. #blackart #blackartists #blackartist #oilpainting
From the website: “Jonathan Green is a renowned American painter celebrated for his vivid, dynamic depictions of Gullah culture in the coastal regions of South Carolina. Born in Gardens Corner, South Carolina, Green was raised in the Gullah community, a group of African Americans known for preserving their West African heritage through language, crafts, and traditions. His art, characterized by bold colors, rhythmic compositions, and an expressive, figurative style, reflects the daily lives, rituals, and landscapes of the Gullah people. Green studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he honed his artistic skills while remaining deeply connected to his cultural roots. His work bridges the past and present, capturing the resilience and beauty of Gullah traditions in a rapidly changing world.”

Your art history post for today: by African American artist Barkley L. Hendricks (1945–2017), “Photo Bloke,” 2016, oil and acrylic on linen, 72 x 48 in., private collection. #arthistory #art #blackart #blackartist #blackartists
From Imani Wiliford, “The Iconoclastic Vision of Barkley L. Hendricks, Hyperallergic, February 11, 2025: ‘“I paint and make art because I like doing it,” the late Barkley L. Hendricks told this magazine in 2016, on occasion of his second solo show at Jack Shainman Gallery. “The subject matter I’m involved with, though, has always been seen as suspect, given the screwed-up culture we live in…. How many white artists get asked about how their whiteness plays into their work?”’
And another quote from the artist, from “BARKLEY L. HENDRICKS with Laila Pedro,” by Andrea Fraser with Thyrza Nichols Goodeve, The Brooklyn Rail, April 2016: “The art of painting is not only about putting paint down. I like to use the texture of the canvas as a vehicle to get the illusion that I’m interested in. People have always connected me with a political situation. I’m more about illusion. When you look at one of my paintings, you’ll see that there are glasses, or a shirt that looks like wool. I want that to be something that resonates with you first, rather than you trying to be connected with the unfortunate situation people of color face. There’s a script that’s been written, whether we like it or not. We’re all a part of it. What needs to happen is for artists to get up and get out of that headlock scenario—out of that script that’s been written that you had no control over.”
