A perfect selection for a Monday morning.

This is a jam-packed incredible compilation of Leadbelly’s music. Everything great is on here; from “Black Betty” to “Green Corn”, as well as the song Kurt Cobain and Nirvana fully made their own on their MTV Unplugged performance, “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?”.
    Thirty four songs in total.

A massive, essential volume, and there’s no better music to pair with having to drag your ass out of bed on a black, wet Monday morning.

  14. Late #TuneTuesday for the theme of #MyGoldenOldie, or the oldest song you know and like. Mine is "Midnight Special" by Lead Belly. He recorded this in 1934.

  15. We often talk about our favourite newest music releases, but what about the oldest?
    Today's #TuneTuesday is #MyGoldenOldie
What's the oldest song you know and like? 🎶 asked Kit-T

A while ago I learned that the 'Black Betty' song was not composed by #RamJam (which I genuinely thought he actually created), but comes from #Leadbelly ! 🤯
The same songwriter who came up with the 'My Girl, Where Did You Sleep Last Night' song. Utterly blew my mind. What else is out there? 😅

    September is finally here!
Fall is MY time of year, and there’s no better artist for me to listen to today.

The weather is gorgeous outside, and “Rock Island Line” is playing.
    Nothing could be better.

I have the next 6 weeks off, and then it’s off to Boston for a week long visit. Before I leave though, I’m gonna be listening to a lot of records like THIS, and a bunch of my other Fall go-tos.

My love for LEADBELLY is well documented on my Masto. I have about 30 or so records of his, many which have the same songs on it, but I do not care.

If there’s one artist from way before my time that I would have been OBSESSIVE about had I been alive then, it’s certainly Huddie.

I’ve never been able to explain it, but his music stirs my soul greatly.

It’s finally raining after a long stretch of brutal heat (thank god I wasn’t here), and it’s much needed.
There’s a lovely, gentle ambience outside, so I’ve got my windows open, and spinning THIS.

Kurt Cobain gave Huddie Ledbetter a remarkable second life some 45 years after his death. I know I myself wouldn’t be as well-schooled on his music without Nitvana’s rendition of “Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” from their legendary MTV Unplugged performance.

This is a killer compilation, with “Death Letter Blues”, “Black Snake Moan”, “Bull Cow”, and “Blind Lemon” on it (to name a few).

There is no better artist to drink Scotch to than Ledbelly.

...but Ima gonna go Boomer on y'all and mention #HarryBelafonte with "Sylvie" originally of #Leadbelly.

Sylvie! Sylvie! I'm so hot and dry
Sylvie! Sylvie! Bring me some water once in a while
    Bring me little water, Sylvie.

...One drink of water won't satisfy me--
    Bring me little bucket, Sylvie

  20. "You Really Got Me" is a song by the English rock band #theKinks, written by frontman #RayDavies and released as their third single in 1964. The song, originally performed in a more #blues-oriented style, was inspired by artists such as #LeadBelly and #BigBillBroonzy. Two versions were recorded, with the second performance used for the final single. Lead guitarist #DaveDavies performs the song's guitar solo.

My spin for the supper hour.
And much like my Vaselines post a few posts back, a million thanks to Kurt Cobain for introducing me to Leadbelly.

I’ve only appreciated Leadbelly’s music more and more as I’ve grown older, and this is just one of several Leadbelly records in my library. Any are as good as another, as they’re the type of records you can take start to finish knowing you’re in good hands for the duration.

I have a fairly large #countryblues section in my library to begin with, but Leadbelly has been played more than any other artist from that section. Also, his music is something I love playing guitar along to. Nothing better than pouring a whiskey and hangin’ with Huddie.

  22. In honor of Black History Month…

“Woke” is an appropriated term that has become a colloquialism loosely meaning “having a moral compass” in the face of systemic oppression. Its original usage was “stay woke,” unintentionally coined by blues musician Lead Belly.

In a 1938 he was recording his song “Scottsboro Boys,” ending it with spoken word about the song’s meaning.
