  1. Potlood schets/tekening van een lid van een metalcore band. Ik ben bewonderaar van o.a Matisse en Chagall. Misschien is dat te zien.

  2. "Untitled," Minnie Evans, 1959.

Evans (1892-1987) was a self-taught Black folk artist who didn't begin drawing until she was in her 40s, working at the ticket booth at Airlie Gardens in Wilmington, NC.

Inspired by her inner visions, her religious faith, her regard for her ancestors, and her surroundings, she created many intricate images of faces amid flowers and foliage. The faces could be her ancestors, or her version of spiritual guides, or something else altogether.

She once said that her flower paintings were her vision of heaven, dismissing the idea of heaven as white and full of clouds, but instead a joyous garden of rainbow colors.

Her work, which began in the 40s, was in many ways a forerunner to psychedelic art of the 60s and 70s; this would not have been out of place on the wall of a hippie's flat.

From the American Folk Art Museum, New York.

  3. An established artist who has been shown at the Tate and the Moma, whom I have known for 75% of my life and adore, said my art was "primitive, but charming in an outsider art sort of way".... and I honestly don't know what to do with that.

I mean, the primitive part is true, I've really only been painting for a couple of years, and I have zero art training outside of wandering the world's museums.

    I can't speak to charming.

I know, absolutely know, it was meant as a compliment, and not as a side swipe. I know this person really well, and if they wanted to insult, they are well armed. He was trying to convince me to enter some art shows.

But still, it kinda stings. 🤷🏽‍♀️ I may be too sensitive to be a painter. ;)

  4. you know the trope of the sketchy van that drives around and offers #freecandy to kids in order to kidnap them?

  7. I so enjoyed reading the story of Charles Joseph Smith in @thetonearm this morning. I'm a sucker for both outsider artists AND extreme technical prowess on an instrument, and seeing them combined in one completely delightful person is very rare indeed.

Fascinating guy. Chicago, you're lucky to have him amongst you!

  8. «Внутренний сад»
Иногда земля хранит больше памяти, чем люди.
Старые домики, родные воздушные линии, опоры - всё это кажется заброшенным и почти бессловесным. Но под слоем тлена и пыли продолжает существовать другой мир: дикий, цветущий, упрямо живой.

Мне хотелось соединить ускользающий пейзаж старой Астрахани с внутренним садом памяти - местом, которое невозможно уничтожить полностью.

  10. A TAKE on the Violent Femmes. Is it a hot take? Who knows?!

Anyway, listen to the #drums in classic Femmes recordings.

From the beginning they were edgy, cool, singing about things others wouldn't, etc. Legit 80s underground awesomeness.

But the drummer held all their shit together.

Especially early on, it really seemed like the Femmes were "rough" and almost #OutsiderArt ... they didn't seem especially awesome at playing their instruments, and Gano's singing was (intentionally but also maybe accidentally) kind of awkward and not always traditionally "musical."

The bass was... well, it was the bass. Sorry, Brian Ritchie. You were probably awesome, and I didn't notice because weirdness happened around that backbone you and the drummer were laying down. Okay, maybe this post should be about bass and drums together, but I'm on a roll about drums (ha!).

[Edit: Yes, I definitely should also have made this post about Ritchie, who apparently kicks all kinds of ass on bass]

Seriously, go listen to the drums on American Music, Prove My Love, or almost any other track. Even "simple" drums aren't simple. The guitar is often quite simple. Bass is straightforward (usually), and the singing is the dorky, sarcastic, angry, not-always-in-tune style of Gano.

But those fucking drums. I mean... they were goddamn righteous.

I'm reading that the Femmes have had 4 drummers (IDK why the shifting), so I don't quite know who I'm talking about; maybe all of them. From Wikipedia:

Victor DeLorenzo (1980–1993, 2002–2013) [EDIT: Further reading suggests I'm mostly talking about DeLorenzo]

    Guy Hoffman (1993–2002)

    John Sparrow (2005 - ?)
    '
    Brian Viglione (2013-2016)

Given the vintage of the recordings I listen to, I'm probably specifically referring to Hoffman and/or DeLorenzo.

Anyway, those drums are impressive, especially in the context of everything else happening. Maybe the most impressive artistic deviations from the norm are sometimes made possible by a foundation of rock-solid skill from which to deviate.
