Guidelines for Small Kennel Quilts:

Materials used should be 100% cotton (biodegradable) on the advice of a veterinarian. This includes the fabric, batting, and thread. Do not use fleece for it sheds to much. Do not use flannel for it often has synthetic fibers. Even 100% cotton flannel tends to pill and it is not suitable for Kennel Quilts during a disaster. Terry Cloth is not suitable for Kennel Quilts. Little claws can catch on it. Batting cannot have scrim for scrim is usually made of polyester. This is a safety issue in case the pet chews the Kennel Quilt.
You do not have to prewash the fabric, but wash the Kennel Quilt after it is made. (pets can have allergies just like humans).
Finished size should be 12" x 18". This fits the most commonly used small kennel used at shelters.
When piecing, use a small stitch length (e.g. 14 stitches/inch).
Do not use binding as it can be hazardous to pets if it becomes loose. Layer, sew around the edge using a small stitch length, and turn quilts pillow-cover style. Whipstitch the opening with small, tight stitches.
Use only simple appliques that are secured with tight stitches along the edges. Avoid using fusibles.
Keep the quilting simple and use small tight quilting stitches that won’t catch on pet claws. Do not tie quilts as the ends can get caught in claws or chewed off.
Do not use any metallic threads or other embellishments (e.g. beads, charms, buttons, ribbons, lace, trims, etc.) of any kind. Do not add handles or loops to the quilt.

We are dogsitting my stepson's two Boston Terrorists (they are actually very sweet) and every night, Rosie HAS to sit on my wife's lap, but only after she spreads out one of the quilts….just like our late kitty Skylar used to do.

Y'all, you have to look at this. Granted, I know very little about #quilts or #quilting, but this is the most amazing thing. I just want to stare at it and marvel that it was made by human hands.

Humans can be pretty cool sometimes. Maybe we don't need the giant meteor yet.

Embroidered a dedication so it’s time to send this baby quilt off. (Technically I am her great-aunt but who’s counting?) Her older siblings got alphabet baby quilts with #linocut animals and I want each quilt to be unique so hers is filled with fruits and vegetables. I like a pieced quilt back and use up my remaining fabrics that way too.

Pin or Glue To Sandwich Your Quilt

Everyone’s ideas are different. Personally, I love to use glue.

Why? I didn’t start quilting until I was 76 so it was a real learning curve for me.

I started by just sewing squares together to help a charity. I soon became bored with that. So I decided to learn how to quilt through the help of videos and, yes I made many errors.

My first quilt I sandwiched it with pins. What a performance. I had to keep moving the pins out of the way of the machine.

That was the only time I ever used pins. Everything I do now is with glue. Not just any glue, I found a spray glue in Bunning’s, it is fantastic. It is called Sika Spray Fix. It does not stain, and if something is crooked or has a crease, you can just lift it up and straighten. Once you have that side straight, turn it over and do the same on the other side.

The beauty of using this glue, is its very economical. I use very little. It doesn’t matter how many times you lift it up and straighten, it will re-stick again with out any problems.

I have tried many other glues and never have as much success as this one. I could normally buy it locally. Since shifting I have to get someone else to buy it for me.

Although, when I was making two quilts a week a can would usually last me two months, so it was economical.

So why would you bother to sandwich with pins, that you have to keep shifting all the time.

I am 84 now and yes I am still making quilts for different charities. Although I do sell some to help pay for the materials as it is a very expensive hobby.

Creating My Own Labels

Don’t laugh, but I also use this spray glue to glue the ends of the material to my printer paper to create my own labels for the quilts.

I must stress that you only need to spray both ends and a spot in the middle and never put in your printer until is is perfectly dry.

I don’t do any thing fancy.

That’s all I do. I do it in word on the computer repeating it over and over to

fill the page. Make sure you leave plenty of room so when you cut it out, you leave enough space to turn the edges under for sewing onto your quilt.

Tip- Make sure you know which side of the paper your printer prints on. Otherwise it will print on the paper and not on your material.

You can only use ink jet printers for making these labels. Plus once printed you need to let dry then cover with paper and iron the print so it does not fade.
