"There was booing and calls of bullsh*t during a recent government town hall in Sturgeon County. It’s where tech giant Meta is building its largest #DataCentre outside of the U.S. Locals have a variety of concerns; we’re zooming in on the promise that this facility will use less #water. Can the plans for ‘closed-loop’ cooling help fix #AI’s thirstiness? We break down what the tech can do, and what’s really happening at data centres already operating."

#Starcloud, a #startup developing #satellites for #AIinference in orbit, raised an additional $250 million, valuing the company at $2.3 billion. The funding will support the development of their largest orbital #datacentre #spacecraft, #Starcloud3, and secure launch capacity as the market tightens. Starcloud is collaborating with #Nvidia to develop a space-ready #GPU, aiming to launch it in late 2028. https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/21/starcloud-raises-200-million-for-orbital-data-centers-as-launch-options-dry-up/?eicker.news #tech #news #ainews

"Mark Plamondon, the executive director of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association, says the negative reaction by some people who attended two such sessions in Lacombe on Wednesday and in Sturgeon County on Thursday “has been different than what we’ve seen.”..."
Well maybe Mr. Plamondon should get out a little more.

The #antiai folks are being played.
Their #aislop rage is being channeled into the #datacentre shamAt best, you're not stopping the datacentre, you are NIMBYING it into poorer neighbourhood.
While #Ai is replacing your jobs.

Although it doesn't show anything about people protesting data centres this is supposed to be an continuously updated list of each one, the resources needed to run them, and a lot more info.
I am sorry recent events left me too tired to research each one and its individual associated community response, but perhaps someone can pick this up and run with it?

Will the authorities in London allow this? Will the #Labour #Government allow this? The answer had better be "NO", or Andy #Burnham is politically dead & buried!

An expert says Tasmania's "guiding principle" on data centres should be that they ultimately "leave communities measurably better off".

#Nvidia will provide up to $105 billion in financing for a new #OpenAI #datacentre in Ohio, supporting 4.25 gigawatts of computing capacity with an option for an additional 3.75 gigawatts. In the 1800s, Manchester textile mills called their workers "hands". In the 2000s, data centres call their workers "hands". Nothing ever shifts under capitalism because the material reality remains the same.
The labour shifted from operating textile machines to switching broken equipment to working ones in the data centre racks. This used to be a solid middle class profession like the pre-industrial weavers had before neoliberal goons destroyed everything.

Data centres are taking more of our water than ever during the extreme heat this summer
But while millions of people in the UK face restrictions, data centres can use as much water as they like

Unusual interest in Scotland from the Guardian - but then someone there in London has to wake up occasionally.
‘If that motion becomes Scottish government policy, it could pose a serious threat to the UK’s AI strategy. British officials have been pushing datacentre developers to build in Scotland.’ That is what worries the Gruaniad.
Data centres - yes, useful- wasting power, water and land on things for no good reason NO.

Nej, klart: Forureneren betaler!

American architecture YouTuber Stewart Hicks has posted a thought-provoking video about data centres: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JOmHYyQoO4
Stewart's contention is during the industrial revolution, corporations basically built two kinds of industrial buildings.
The first were repurposable buildings. They may have originally housed production lines or warehouses, but were designed in such a way that they could be adapted for different uses.
Many are still in use today as fashionable loft apartments or trendy open-plan offices.
The second type of industrial buildings were designed around a single piece of equipment for a single extractive purpose. Think steel mills, for example.
At the end of their life, the single-use buildings were often abandoned and left to rust.
Hicks' contention is that hyperscale AI data centres are essentially like those industrial revolution era steel mills.
They're large buildings designed for one specific extractive purpose only: Housing racks or server equipment.
It doesn't need to be this way. It's perfectly possible to house a data centre in a repurposable multistorey building. But it's not being done essentially as a cost-saving measure.
But the end result is, at some point in the future, we're likely to find ourselves with 'rustbelts' of abandoned former data centres that can't be used for any other purpose.
Here's a link to the video again if you're interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JOmHYyQoO4

Hundreds of protesters flooded the streets of Vancouver this summer, decrying plans for a publicly subsidized cluster of Telus data centres'

Is AI regulation to be a state by state affair in Australia?
“South Australia will hold a royal commission into artificial intelligence and the policy around it, with the state government warning of the technology's potentially destructive impacts as well as acknowledging its upsides.“Premier Peter Malinauskas said AI, if unchecked, presented a "material risk to the way society operates".
“He said the inquiry was intended to maximise the benefits and minimise unwanted impacts from the growth of AI.”
In another piece of SA AI data centre news a possessive apostrophe is violated and unverifiable claims that a data centre to be established out in the boon docks, but handy to an electricity substation & River Murray pipeline, will create 200 high skill jobs & use hardly any water all of which will be constantly recirculated…
