  1. As a famous comedy TV star in decades gone by was often heard to say: ‘Surprise, surprise, surprise.’ (I did watch Gomer Pyle but I wasn’t a fan, if that makes sense - but I digress)

“Report warns AI data centre boom threatens Australia's energy transition.” Who missed this? It has been the talk everywhere and US-side is now dealing with their own #DataCentre issues.

If it wasn’t enough for the #GenAISlop peddlers to hoover up the internet without so much as a thank you to creators of the content, digitising (mostly) library books (Libraries close and #TechBros give you access to the books — For A Fee) and flooding the digital world with regurgitated and confabulated information. These same #LibertarianTechHeads now want our water and energy to run their insane harware platforms. For what? More #Chatbots? More #CrapCoding. More #FakeImages? More #FascistPropaganda?

  6. #Qualcomm’s stock surged 12% on Friday, reaching a record high, as investors recognise its growing role in the #AIdevice boom. The company’s dominance in #smartphones and partnerships with companies like #OpenAI and #Stellantis are key drivers of this growth. Additionally, Qualcomm’s new #datacentre chips, the AI200 and AI250, are generating investor excitement. cnbc.com/2026/05/22/qualcomms- #tech #media #news

  8. #India's #DataCentre boom confronts a looming water challenge

    Nikhil Inamdar, 9 November 2025

Excerpt: "From #Chile and #Mexico to #Georgia in the #US and #Scotland, serious concerns have been raised around data centres guzzling excess water for their cooling systems and consuming vast amounts of energy at the cost of local communities.

"In an energy starved, water-scarce India, these challenges are even more accentuated.

"According to the World Bank, India has 18% of the world's population, but only 4% of its water resources, making it among the most water-stressed countries in the world.

"India's data centre water consumption, meanwhile, is expected to more than double from 150 billion litres in 2025 to 358 billion litres by 2030, putting further pressure on its water table.

"Moreover, most of India's data centres are concentrated in urban clusters like #Mumbai, #Hyderabad, #Chennai and #Bengaluru which have strong competing water needs."

  13. Priorities — so important!

People are whining, that 50 k people village #LakeTahoe will be cut off #electricity, because the supplier, #NVEnergy, will deliver the #energy to an #AI #dataCentre instead.

    That's just fair:

Humans can live without electricity. #Humanity lived 300 k years without it.

But AI can't exist w/o it!

From each according to their ability, to each according to their needs.

  23. I've just played with the Google android local #LLM,
Gemma-4-E4B, its the same model that the wood folk were losing their chips over a few days ago.

First, its important to understand it is a fully local model.
    No internet connectivity is necessary.

    How to use it:
    1. Download Edge gallery from Play Store
    2. Go to models and pick Gemma-4-E4B

You may want to do it on WiFi as its 3.5 GB.

Then just run it via Edge gallery.

    No #datacentre
    No gas turbines
    No rivers for cooling

On a aging 8 Core cell, with 32GB of ram and a GPU it runs very well speed wise.

Its "only" 4 billion parameters, so how good is it?

  26. “A 15,000 sq metre #DataCentre near Perth will no longer go ahead after the developer withdrew plans amid community opposition over its impact on culturally significant sites. The three-storey, 120-megawatt #GreenSquare datacentre in the town of #Hazelmere had been intended to power #CloudComputing and the acceleration of #ArtificialIntelligence, but faced fierce community backlash.

A City of #Swan council review of the proposed development, which was to be located 15km east of #Perth, attracted almost 1,900 public submissions. The #council last week released its responsible authority report into the datacentre, in which council staff recommended rejecting the proposal.

In the event of a power outage, the noise of the #DieselGenerators needed to keep the centre in operation would exceed allowable daytime and night-time levels, the council found. A nearby #school and local #residents would have faced the noise had the generators been in operation.”
