"Jungle with Setting Sun," Henri Rousseau, c. 1910.
Rousseau (1844-1910) was a former tax collector who took up art in his 40s. Completely self-taught, he faced ridicule and dismissal in his lifetime, but now he is highly regarded as a precursor to modernism and an influence on later avant-garde art.
He loved painting jungle scenes, but they weren't real jungles; he never saw one himself. His ideas of jungles were based on popular literature and visits to botanical gardens in France. His animals often had humanlike faces and sometimes seemed to be undertaking human activities.
Here, for instance, the jungle plants look like houseplants magnified to enormous size; the flowers look like dandelions and clover blossoms, but giant ones. They tower over the man and tiger in the bottom center. It's impossible to tell if he was trying to be realistic but just lacked any reference to the real thing, or creating a sort of approximation using what references he had, and creating a personal fantasy.
It's easy to laugh at Rousseau's work; sometimes it doesn't make a lot of sense. But there's a joy and enthusiasm about it that appeal.

Pippin (1888-1946) was a self-taught Black American artist who took up painting after losing an arm in WWI.
While he never really subscribed to any school of art, he's generally credited as a Modernist, although I generally regard him as a Naive, but in the best way, as someone whose style developed from his personal passions rather than an academy.
His work often depicted Black American domestic life, but also depicted historic scenes (his first known painting is of his last memories of the battlefield; another notable painting is of John Brown going to his execution), religious themes, and various symbolic works.
At the time, a blue tiger was a symbol for something unattainable, and a bear represented the wilderness. But many feel that this painting is a symbol of racial conflict. Sadly we have nothing from the artist himself to hint at his intention, but there are other paintings that directly address racism and prejudice.

"A Tiger Entered the Orchard....," Maria Prymachenko, 1994.
The full title of this work is "A Tiger Entered the Orchard and is Delighted That the Apple Trees Are Plentiful, There is an Abundance of Apples."
Prymachenko (1909-1997) was a self-taught Ukrainian artist who rose to prominence as a beloved figure in the Ukrainian art world. In 1966 she won the Schevchenko National Prize, UNESCO declared 2009 was her year, and both a street in Kyiv and a minor planet are named for her. Her work graces a series of Ukrainian stamps. Picasso hailed her as a genius.
Her work relies heavily on Ukrainian and Polesian folk traditions and fairy tales, so it may not always make a lot of sense to us Westerners. Still, the vibrant colors and sheer joy in her work is a pleasure to behold.
Sadly, some of her works were destroyed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and much is still endangered due to the conflict.

"Untitled (Man Carrying Dog on Object)," Bill Traylor, c. 1939-1942.
Traylor (1853-1949) is someone I've talked about before...to give a quick summary, he was a Black man born into slavery, was a sharecropper most of his life, and only took up art at the age of 85, when he was an unhoused person on the streets of Montgomery, AL. He started to draw on scrap cardboard just to pass the time, but his work gathered notice and he actually had a show before he died. His work was rediscovered in the early 1980s and now he's hailed as one of the great self-taught Naive/Outsider artists.
Traylor's work can be bewildering; I've seen simple drawings of people and horses and then elaborate pictures of I-Don't-Know-What. Here we have a man carrying a dog on his head, on top of what looks like an urn. Maybe. What is it? What is the significance of the dog? Only Traylor would know....but then again, sometimes artists will just create and not think of meaning. Even David Lynch has said that the meanings of works like ERASERHEAD are unknown to him.

"Nuclear war - Damn her! (...)," Maria Prymachenko, 1989.
From Ukraine, Prymachenko (1909-97) was a self-taught folk artist who also worked in embroidery. Her work drew on Ukrainian and Polesian folk traditions, and his particular work is her own reaction to the Chernobyl disaster. Prymachenko was directly affected, her village being threatened by the radiation. While Soviet art tended to glorify atomic power as a triumph of man's ingenuity triumphing over nature, she depicted atomic power as an evil monster ready to pounce.
She is now regarded as one of the great Ukrainian artists, with her work being featured on stamps and coins in Ukraine. Sadly, some of her work was lost when the Russians set fire to the Ivankiv Historical and Local History Museum, but locals are said to have run into the burning building to rescue what works they could.
Damn war, indeed!

May 21 - the birthday of French post-impressionist painter Henri Rousseau (1844-1910) - one of the most famous representatives of naive art or primitivism. Ridiculed during his lifetime by critics, he came to be recognized as a self-taught genius whose works are of high artistic quality. Rousseau's work exerted an extensive influence on several generations of avant-garde artists.
