  3. Jazztodon artist of the week: Scott Joplin!

From @aaj : Scott Joplin personified ragtime; he was its chief champion, the figure most closely associated with its composition. It was Joplin's short, hard-driving melodies- -and the syncopated backbone he furnished them—that helped define the musical parameters of ragtime, a style that gave voice to the African American experience during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

In a move not uncommon for young blacks at the time, Joplin left home in his early teens, working as an itinerant pianist at honky-tonks and salons of the Midwest, South, and Southwest. The true origin of the music was to be found in these low rent musical halls. The signature fast and frenetic pace of ragtime reflected the jubilant side of the black experience—compared with the melancholy-heavy blues—and the music became, according to Blesh and Janis, America's "most original artistic creation."

  12. I was watching the Gardiner Brothers dancing to The Entertainer by Scott Joplin with the sound turned off, and I realized that they were so clear in interpreting the song with their movements that I could tell where they were in the song, and I could hear the music in my head and match it up

  15. I'm looking at purchasing #Ragtime #music CDs and the only pianists playing #ScottJoplin that I liked were Richard Zimmerman and Joshua Rifkin. I'll probably go with the former.

  16. Musical Interlude: I was listening to some Scott Joplin today, and realized how relaxing and comforting I found his piano rags to be. And then I remembered this lovely routine...so today I'm giving you not only some music, but some dance as well.

"Solace," composed by Scott Joplin, performed by uncredited musicians, danced by Juliet Prowse, from "The Muppet Show" (1977).
