Yes, back in the day Philips (who you likely know more now as the maker of Sonicare toothbrushes) was also a reputable jazz and classical label. Though the copyright was 1965 they put out this album in 1966. Simone switched to Philips in 1964 and was there (putting out seven LPs) until switching to RCA Victor in 1967. My copy—again via Mystery Train in Gloucester MA—is a 2016 reissue in the "Back to Black" series by Verve Music Group, pressed at Record Industry in The Netherlands. Nina Simone (1933-2003): Pianistin und Sängerin, dazu eine der einflussreichsten Musikerinnen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Im Kampf gegen Rassismus wandelt sie sich in den frühen 1960ern zur Protestsängerin, was ihr in den #USA Medienboykotte einbringt. Die Aufzeichnung ihres Konzerts in den Niederlanden ist ein eindringliches Dokument – und eine Sternstunde der Musik.
Es ist ein besonderer Moment im Leben der weltberühmten #Sängerin und #Pianistin #NinaSimone (1933-2003): Sie ist gerade Mutter geworden, in den USA hat sie sich den Protesten der #Bürgerrechtsbewegung gegen den #Rassismus und die #Diskriminierung der schwarzen Bevölkerung angeschlossen.
Simone hofft, dass ihre Stimme Teil der Veränderung der Situation in den USA der 1960er sein kann. Doch ihre Texte und ihr Auftreten gelten in den USA als unbequem, im Süden der USA wird sie teils boykottiert.
Der Wechsel ihres Plattenlabels – aus den USA zum niederländischen Label Philips Records – führt zu einem TV-Konzert, mit dem sie ein Millionenpublikum erreicht.
Entlang des Konzerts, das in schwarz-weiß aufgezeichnet wurde, erzählt der Film von Simones Anfängen in der Musik, wie sie von der Klassik zum Jazz kam. Dabei geht es auch um ihren Mut und unerbittlichen Kampf für #Gleichberechtigung und #Freiheit.

macht sich Nina Simone ein Stück von #CharlesAznavour zu eigen – in seiner Mischung aus Resignation und trotziger #Hoffnung ein Höhepunkt in einem höchst intensiven #Konzert.Der Film lässt den Auftritt aus heutiger Sicht Revue passieren.
