  3. DJ Hairy Larry Presents luvtrst. Playing St. Thomas

    sbblues.com/2026/06/14/dj-hair

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a jazz quartet from Northeast Arkansas play a Sonny Rollins song.

Sonny Rollins was a great jazz composer who also redefined jazz saxophone. He wrote the popular jazz standard, “St. Thomas”, based on the Bahamian folk song “Sponger Money”, a nursery song in the Virgin Islands, that his mother sang to him when he was a child.

  4. Sonny Rollins, Sonny Rollins On Impulse!, 1965 on Impulse

Classic album, featuring Rollins with Walter Booker (bass), Mickey Roker (drums), and Ray Bryant (piano). Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in the summer of 1965. Sadly Rollins passed this May (2026) in Woodstock NY. My copy—via Mystery Train Records in Gloucester MA—is the 2021 Acoustic Sounds Series reissue, supervised by Chad Kassem, cut by Ryan Smith, and pressed at Quality Record Pressing (QRP). Sounds fantastic!

  6. 💁🏻‍♀️ ICYMI: This improvised #1986 #summer solo by #SonnyRollins is well-known for a couple of reasons. 🎷

First, it's a wonderful example of a full-throated improviser weaving familiar melodies, but it also took an unexpected turn when he misjudged a jump and broke his heel... 🦶

  12. So amazing Sonny Rollins's rendition of What's My Name by David Saxon (and Robert Wells). It's a really great song too.

Then listen to the 1958 version by Rollins:

  13. There's this crazy thing going on with Sonny Rollins July 11, 1958 recording of Grand Street released in the streaming version of the Big Brass album on iTunes vs. the 1992 CD release where the audio is overly filtered or compressed. I can't tell exactly what was done, but they somehow overprocessed it and the difference is so pronounced. I'm glad I still have a rip of the 92 CD that sounds so much more natural. It's crazy.
