  1. Sonny Rollins, Way Out West, 1957 on Contemporary

This was the first Rollins album with Ray Brown and Shelly Manne, and the first time he recorded with only bass and drums. I love this cover photo emphasizing the New York native was out west. My copy—direct from Craft Recordings—is the 2009 Original Jazz Classics reissue which was remastered back in 1988 and repressed in 2009. It reproduces the yellow Contemporary labels but with a catalog number OJC-337.

  11. I always loved Sonny Rollins sound on his album "The Bridge". On "Without a Song" it is beautiful, on the Solo break following a fabulous Jim Hall even heartbreakingly so.

His sound here differs from earlier and later recordings. I think partly because of his mouthpiece choice. Before he was mostly on Links, and after on Bergs. The Selmer Soloist he plays here somehow amplifies the beauty that was always there.

  16. Returned from a sunny spring walk & #NowListening to my latest find: #SonnyRollins With The #ModernJazzQuartet.

I’m a fan of Rollins, #ArtBlackey, & this period of #Prestige in general.

There are sections where this rocks, & Rollins really honks, but some of the ballads are really lovely. In A Sentimental Mood, in particular, stills the turning of the earth - if only for a moment.

This pressing by #OJC is flat, centred, clean, with enough dynamics.

  19. #NowListening to #jazz courtesy of #SonnyRollins, #WayOutWest. I love the #Prestige and #Contemporary stuff. For me, West is second only to #SaxophoneColossus: melodic, varied, great musicianship, & proper bite to it. In particular, I love the playing of #RayBrown here.

This 1988 #OJC pressing (I’m assuming it’s #AAA) sounds well rounded with the tone of the saxophone very natural & dynamic. My copy is clean, but there is a dramatic edgewarp on side A.
