#Eulogy: #Jazz colossus #SonnyRollins dies aged 95🕊
"Rollins was one of a handful of #saxophone players who defined the instrument, a pantheon that includes Charlie #Parker, Coleman #Hawkins & John #Coltrane..🎷🎶 He was dubbed the "Saxophone Colossus" after te title of his seminal 1956 album, in which he brought a new power to the instrument as he came to define hard bop -- a jazz that was intense & stripped back te genre's structural confines"

#SonnyRollins , colossus of the #saxophone , has #died at 95
The way some musicians play, you think they'll never die. Theodore "Sonny" Rollins was such a man: A #saxophonist revered for his huge tone & seemingly inexhaustible improvisations
Rollins was a National Endowment for the Arts #Jazz Master, a recipient of a #KennedyCenter honor & a recipient of the National Medal of the Arts. & he was the very incarnation of a modern jazz #musician. His art was his life.

Sonny Rollins, Way Out West, 1957 on Contemporary
This was the first Rollins album with Ray Brown and Shelly Manne, and the first time he recorded with only bass and drums. I love this cover photo emphasizing the New York native was out west. My copy—direct from Craft Recordings—is the 2009 Original Jazz Classics reissue which was remastered back in 1988 and repressed in 2009. It reproduces the yellow Contemporary labels but with a catalog number OJC-337.https://goatless.org/2026/05/01/sonny-rollins-way-out-west-1957-on-contemporary
