#NewYorkCity Mayor #ZohranMamdani has compared #NelsonMandela’s struggle against apartheid in #SouthAfrica to the #Palestinian struggle for freedom and self-determination. #Mamdani made the remarks at the inaugural Nelson Mandela Global Leadership Forum in New York City.

Mandela was an anti-#apartheid activist who later became South Africa’s first democratically elected president and is widely regarded as one of the most significant figures in the global fight against racial oppression and injustice.

Mamdani drew parallels between Mandela’s struggle and the situation facing Palestinians today, citing kidnapped Gaza doctor Dr. #HussamAbuSafiya, who is still detained by Israeli forces, as an example.

June 12, 1964 - Nelson Mandela, a 46-year-old lawyer and a leader of the opposition to South Africa’s racially separatist apartheid system, was convicted of sabotage in the Rivonia Trial and sentenced to life imprisonment.

From Mandela’s statement to the court prior to sentencing: “I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

So, the departure of Donald Pols from Milieudefensie to Tata Steel is turning out to be a 'dodged a bullet' kind of situation.

Pols was fired from Tata after a single day, because he was the leader of the ASF in South-Africa during his student years.

The ASF was a far-right organization fighting for apartheid. Pols was literally trying to prevent Melson Mandela from speaking in public.

That's pretty close to stereotypically evil. Fuck that dude.

May 10, 1994 - Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa’s first black president. He had won the country’s first election in which all South Africans could vote, regardless of race. Mandela had spent nearly three decades imprisoned for his part in the struggle to attain political and civil rights for black and colored citizens. This ended more than three centuries of white rule, beginning with the Dutch in 1652.
