  1. And I think the reason it is important to me is that there is value in effort.

I'm far less interested in whether a C64 can theoretically run a perfect port of Lemmings and far more interested in the effort a human put in to make it do so.

If I wanted to play perfect Lemmings, I'd load up an Amiga and play it there.

The end result is not the most interesting part to me. The process to get there is. And I think that's what's missing from AI projects. That human investment.

  2. I can’t wait another day

  3. Grant's memoirs are great. There is another story from them that has stuck with me my whole life.

He's writing about the earliest days of the Civil War, when he, a washed-up soldier, had been appointed to command a regiment of Illinois volunteers. One day orders came for him to take his troops and confront a unit of Confederates nearby. He had combat experience; he was a veteran of the Mexican War. But this was the first time he would be commanding other men in battle, and that made him anxious.

"As we approached the brow of the hill from which it was expected we could see Harris’ camp, and possibly find his men ready formed to meet us, my heart kept getting higher and higher until it felt to me as though it was in my throat. I would have given anything then to have been back in Illinois, but I had not the moral courage to halt and consider what to do; I kept right on. When we reached a point from which the valley below was in full view I halted. The place where Harris had been encamped a few days before was still there and the marks of a recent encampment were plainly visible, but the troops were gone. My heart resumed its place. It occurred to me at once that Harris had been as much afraid of me as I had been of him. This was a view of the question I had never taken before; but it was one I never forgot afterwards."

  4. While an AI chatbot and a human might communicate in the same language there is a huge difference. AI uses predictive text. Humans choose words based on the meaning the words have for us. The meaning of a word is tied to our experience, our memories and our physical neurology.

Example: a dentist chair, your favorite chair

Are each just a chair? An object you sit on?

My guess is you can viscerally feel the difference between the two.

An AI chatbot can tell you the difference but it can never “know” the difference. The chatbot has no sensors or mechanism to feel the fear of one or the comfort of the other. Humans intimately know the difference. How can ever be “sentient” if it can’t ever feel the difference?

There has to be a better way to handle festivals and similar gatherings. The city should stop taking our public parks out of commission for weeks each summer to benefit Live Nation and those who can afford its prices.

There is also currently about 7GW of wind curtailment, so if we had a better grid, we could be down to almost no gas and exporting electricity.

  9. Imagine you're an elevator engineer.

There's this great design (tho quite expensive, but let's just consider the engineering) that makes this impressive elevator which performs surprisingly well on all aspects, and beyond.

Like maybe it takes you all the way to the room or smth.

But the design _must_ use a roulette wheel, and 1/N times, the lift will fail and kill/maim passengers.

The AI industry is not only deeming this acceptable, but arguing that a low N is worth it.

  14. Treetop Watcher

I spotted this bird high in the top of a distant tree while on safari in my backyard yesterday (25 October 2026). The species is a little difficult to make out from this angle, especially with the bird partially obscured by the branches. Still, there is something familiar about its posture that practically screams "woodpecker." I'm fairly certain it's a yellow-bellied sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius), a species that managed to elude me all last year.

  20. Mike Rogers' ChristianNationalist Religious Bigotry Threatens Jewish Members of the Public — Particularly Those In #Michigan

There are several distinct forms of Christian Nationalism & White Nationalism besides genocidal #zionism. MAGA embraces them all, from Rogers' traditional Nazism, to Peter Thiel's, Pete Hegesth's, JD Vance's preferred millennialist #Ziklag armageddon which, as we've seen, explicitly escalates the ongoing holocaust throughout Western Asia being conducted by State of Israel — with total compliance of its client, the US. And Rogers is perfectly okay with it, while scapegoating the Jewish diaspora.

There's a place for people like these, well outside of the Society they detest.

  23. Stop talking about riots and fire in France.

There are far right wing dogs attacking protesters while the CRS (most violent corps made for repressing protests) just watch. If the protesters fight back, the CRS will charge them. Videos appearing of cops shooting grenades at the face of teenagers, which is not legal btw but you know, what have you. Videos of them ugly bastards throwing gas in small streets that are not part of the demonstrations, with parents and children running.

And the worst in all that is that the discussion from the point of view of some other french people is: they should not bring children at demonstrations, and they should not get out anyway; which is exactly what the bastards want, fear so they all fall in line.

This is not looking good and no amount of whataboutism ("but the looters") can make it justified. No "but they attack the police" when it's about a teenager trying to kick back at fully protected pigs with shields and the response is flashball.

  25. Lions of Firenze.
Everywhere you turn in Florence there's a lion.
    1. One of the Medici Lions. Originally placed at the Villa Medici in Rome, now guarding the statues in Piazza Della Signoria. This is the Vacca lion created between 1570-90 to accompany the 2nd century Fancelli lion. In the backgroud you see the copy of the David statue, replacing the original when moved inside the Accademia.
