  1. #openSUSETumbleweed #Linux with #KDE #Plasma #Benchmarked on everybytecounts.org. The new worst performing linux distribution tested so far. The highest ram usage at 1400MB and 6GB disk usage. If you're looking to use Plasma, it runs on #AlpineLinux with roughly a third of the memory usage at 578mb and a half the disk usage at 2.6GB. Curious why run #openSUSE when there are better performing options.

  10. Do you use @nodejs on @alpinelinux? While the Node.js project publishes Alpine containers to dockerhub it is currently an "experimental" platform and does not have the same guarantees as other platforms.

We are looking for volunteers to help us bring Alpine to "Tier 2" where it would be built and released through the normal CI process.

If you can help and/or work for a company depending on Node on Alpine/musl then let us know at github.com/nodejs/node/issues/

  13. So, #Debian has a bit of a reputation on flimsy hardware support. You couldn't even install D12 on a Z8xxx series CPU without fiddling with it unless you wanted to end up with an unbootable system.

I happen to have next to me another "special" system, a Chromebox with an 8th-gen Intel CPU. Which have a notoriously heinous sound subsystem (there's a paid driver for Windows).

    I've dropped #CachyOS, #Ubuntu, #Fedora, #ElementaryOS, #ZorinOS, #MXLinux, #Bazzite, #AlpineLinux, #SolusLinux, #VanillaOS, and a few more on this system.

NONE of them was able to correctly configure audio on this machine. Some would not even detect an audio sink, others would have an "Analog Audio" sink, but no HDMI. Others would have a "Dummy Output". Fedora even listed my network-connected AV Receiver as an audio sink (!), but not HDMI.

And then there's Debian 13... Which correctly outputs over HDMI **OUT OF THE BOX**...

  14. instalar #bind9 en @alpinelinux en un lxc de @proxmox es complicado y divertido.
    Que buena y minimalista aplicación.

  15. Both #Mobian and #PostmarketOS (#Alpine #Linux) repositories block updates over #Tor, but so does GrapheneOS. However, it is possible to have onionized repositories with #Debian on #Termux.

proot-distro with alpine can install (apk add) #rust and #cargo. Just add the required libraries and #Arti is built! PostmarketOS is built on Alpine and, interestingly, "apks" and "sdks" derive from Alpine, not from Google.
    pkgs.alpinelinux.org/package/e

I wonder if microG can be installed in PostmarketOS. The Tor Browser should install on mobile linux devices (whether #Posh or #Gnome, etc). Until then, you can modify the proxy settings in #Firefox to use Arti. Onionsites could also be accessed this way.

  16. I was able to boot Alpine on hifive permier p550

    alpine:~# uname -a
    Linux alpine 6.6.67-0-eswin #1-Alpine SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Thu, 26 Dec 2024 14:02:15 +0000 riscv64 Linux

But I'm not sure if linux-eswin is a good name for the kernel package.

  17. Todays release of #PopOS Alpha with #CosmicDesktop has been benchmarked on everybytecounts.org. A gitlab issue is open for #AlpineLinux (gitlab.alpinelinux.org/alpine/). Hopefully this #MemorySafe #DesktopEnvironment might get packaged on a performant #Linux distribution. Maybe #RedoxOS, based on #Rustlang, will also get Cosmic? :)

  18. Did a fresh install of #AlpineLinux. Switched to Edge to have an updated #Plasma desktop, and everything was great. So I set up #NetworkManager because wpa_supplicant makes me want to punch kittens whenever I have to use something other than my home network. Which worked great.

Start my laptop this morning, though, and it won't get pas starting the display manager during boot.

    *sigh*

So… now I get to manually fix some config files or something I guess. Shoulda gone with #XFCE

(Before anyone jumps on me, I obviously fucked up something in the configuration, this isn't #KDE's fault, and I 100% own that this is my fault. As usual, the Owlbear should not be taken seriously.) #Linux

  19. Finally got my VM hosts updated to the latest AlpineLinux release. Browsing Ceph RBD pools is still broken in `libvirt`… no idea why but one RBD pool works fine, the other refuses to start. (They are configured identically apart from the name of the pool being connected to.)

It tells me "An error occurred, but the cause is unknown". No logs. I asked on `libvirt-users` mailing list: no answer. It's a mystery.

But… if I hand-configure the XML (usually by taking the `dumpxml` output from another VM and hand-editing), I can link to RBD volumes just fine and it just works, so whatever.

The other gotcha was VM types becoming unavailable. A lot of my VMs were `pc-i440fx-3.1` or `pc-q35-3.1` machines. Moving from `pc-q35-3.1` to `pc-q35-10.1` was painless, but going from i440FX-based VMs to Q35 took a bit of hand-massaging the XML: remove PCI IDE/SATA/USB controllers then change the `pci-root` node to `pcie-root`.

Everything is now running `pc-q35-10.1`; so that should kick that can far down the road.

I've managed to get my production cluster running with after a period of struggles with . I've also been working with my friend to build fresh base images with and shipping them off to .

  21. Our lead relay engineer @alexhaydock has increased our stateless #Tor exit relay deployment to 96! (+1 because of the new #RISCV bare-metal node, +1 other we redeployed due to a silly spelling error). We're stress testing our three AMD Epyc 7402P servers that use #Proxmox.

Each one of the 96 Tor exit nodes are diskless Unified Kernel Images, 56MB in total size, using @alpinelinux's alpine-make-rootfs with an absolutely bare minimum number of packages. We'll be publishing more about our new architecture and configuration soon.

  22. Did I mention that I just built my router today?

    What did I use?

    No. Not anything #BSD based.

No. Not #WRT of any kind.

    #AlpineLinux + #Awall

That's it. Just Alpine and a little tweaking.

  23. #ifstate 1.8.5 has been released:
    github.com/liske/ifstate/relea

This release contains a important fix: it could happen that link settings are not correctly applied while ifstate does not show any error. This happens when the kernel does not report any errors. One of this settings is the vlan_id for vlan links 😱

When running as #VRRP fifo script for #keepalived it is now possible to trigger a config reload by SIGHUP.

Updates are available for #AlpineLinux edge + 3.18.
