  3. MakeUseOf: The Raspberry Pi is no longer the obvious DIY choice. “If you wanted to build a home server, run Home Assistant, set up Pi-hole, or experiment with Linux on cheap hardware, the answer was simple: buy a Raspberry Pi. But Raspberry Pi isn’t the smartest for Linux projects anymore, and due to a combination of factors, it’s not the obvious DIY choice either. Prices have gone up, the […]

  6. MakeZine: Live: Arduino Announce UNO Q, App Lab, and Qualcomm Acquisition. “Perhaps not the greatest surprise — there has been talk or expectation of something like this happening since Arduino raised $54MM two years ago — but as soon as I saw that ‘Q’ silkscreened on the new UNO, I guessed the implication: Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. have announced an agreement to acquire Arduino.”

  7. Tech shenanigans update: After playing around with #SBCs to work as #retrogaming devices, I gave up and move some rarely utilized mini PCs around.

Moved the #M1MacMini to the living room TV and the #N97 mini PC to the bedroom.

Now I should be able to emulate retro games on all the TVs! With this change I can now do 3D emulation.

As for the SBCs, most have been placed in a box. Currently only tinkering with the #OrangePiRV2 and #OrangePiZero2W.

  8. The #SBC’s resolution to overturn Obergefell and reinstate bans on gay marriage weaponizes religion to strip LGBTQ people of civil rights and undermines decades of legal progress for equality. slate.com/life/2025/...

  9. @hyc the links are both 404 not found for me. Appreciate the names of the devices. I'm curious what your install process was to get #AlpineLinux on these #ARM #RK3588 #SBCs. I've been unsuccessful with #AMLogic #A311D.

  11. Any recommendations for very low powered #fanless #computers / #sbcs with highly efficient processors and an onboard m.2 nvme? Also great if it has an abundance of memory. :)

  13. Lately I've been doing more #SelfHosting again due to the current situation. Of course, I'm paying particular attention to power consumption and noise. After good experiences with the #ARM64 architecture, even with power-hungry applications such as Mastodon, I'm now using the smartphone technology for my homeservers, too.

There are #SBCs with more open hardware, but the #RaspberryPi is widely available, well documented, powerful and inexpensive. And it is available with up to 16 GB of RAM.

Anyone operating a server on the Internet must install #security updates quickly. However, many people forget to restart running software so that the new version runs instead of the old one. The #needrestart tool helps with this on Debian-based Linux systems, which unfortunately is usually not pre-installed.

On my Raspberry Pi 4, needrestart always runs correctly (automatically after apt upgrade). On my Raspberry Pi 5, however, I first had to create a configuration file as described by the main developer here:
    github.com/liske/needrestart/b
Previously, the tool always claimed that a reboot was necessary because it thought an outdated Linux kernel was running.

Next, I want to activate #LUKS hard drive encryption on both raspis. Unfortunately, this is not as easy under #Raspbian or #RaspberryPiOS as on other Debian systems. If you have managed this: Please let me know how you did it!

  17. I've been doing a lot of research about #RetroGaming #handhelds and #SBCs. There's a ton of very weak quad core #ARM devices that run #games all the way up to #Dreamcast, and #GameCube! RaspberryPi level; things with screens and buttons hardwired to them.

But then there are the #OrangePi boards with #Rockchip #SoC that have 2 more cores! That makes them even faster than the #Unisoc chip in the #retroidPocket4Pro which easily handles #PS2. No screens or buttons though..

  19. I still think it's odd that you don't see the #BCM2711 in any other #SBCs

There's a #RockChip and #Amlogic in EVERYTHING; they use the same #Arm cores, as the #RaspberryPi but in different configurations. There are versions with 3.2 USB, and 2.5 Ethernet!

There are DOZENS of devices made by a dozen or more companies using #Allwinner, #Unisoc, #Dimensity, or #qualcomm chips, but there's only one company making #BCM devices.

  23. While surfing the wilds of new , I stopped by , saw they had two (2!) new boards and went to look

    -Fire: beagleboard.org/boards/beaglev

Reading the specs, I was pretty sure I either suffered a random bout of brain damage or I was hallucinating, then I got to Storage where I recognized some of the words. Not all of them, but some. So that was fun.

    -Ahead: beagleboard.org/boards/beaglev

I am not brain damaged and that is how to organize new (to me) hardware words.

I enjoy playing #Minecraft / #MetroidDread / #retrogaming / #indiegaming / #ttrpgs, #DIY-ing #electronics and #programming projects, using low-powered #Linux PCs and #SBCs like my #RaspberryPi, and #writing stories. #Animation is a cool artform, but I like other kinds of art too!

  28. Why I really wanted to have a #Macbook Pro #m2 ?

Because I can run #nixos in a virtual machine and use it as a remote builder for linux kernels for #arm #sbcs.

  29. PINE64 Star64: New #SBC single-board computer orderable with #riscv processor
    notebookcheck.net/PINE64-Star6

PINE64 has started selling the Star64, its RISC-V-based single-board computer (#SBC ). Available in 4 GB or 8 GB of RAM variants, the PINE64 Star64 comes with plenty of I/O and should be about as powerful as competing Rockchip RK3566-powered #SBCs.

  31. This is supposed to be an AT Tiny 88 and a clone of the Arduino Nano. It doesn't seem to like the Arduino IDE so I'm stumped right now. I think it might need its own IDE.

Any ideas? I'm using Linux mint cinnamon.

  32. Just out of pure curiousity, but does anyone in their #HomeLab have a #StorageAreaNetwork or #SAN for short? I am contemplating setting one up with a few #SBCs or low wattage machines, with all #RAID1 set-up instead of #RAID10 on a single machine.

  33. @thomasfuchs The I coveted, IIRC, was 3 megabytes for $5K (maybe 5MB for $3K) for an in the very early . Hard to imagine in this day of $10 32GB microsd cards and 8GB

Plus my new blog will have hardware reviews and longer educational material.😄

  35. These #SBCs in a keyboard design are utterly delightful, lightweight yet powerful enough to run browsers or #libreoffice without much hassle.

A big plus of these @orangepixunlong ones is, they run #Linux and that makes me very happy
