  1. @demonshreder

If you haven't heard, use ecc memory to prevent wrong data from being written, causing a read to later not validate correctly because the checksum does not match.

  2. Yay finally got #ZFS running in a mirror #raid configuration. +1 for data redudancy and hopefully zero data corruption.

    #selfhosting #homelab #100daysofhomelab #devops

  3. Got my #ZFS data partition booting of encrypted keys as well. Transferring all the data over to ZFS. Feeling stupid to not have done this earlier, especially when I lost some SQL backups to data corruption earlier. 🤦

  4. I finally got my full disk encrypted root partition to boot using #SecureBoot. The issue was that the motherboard was in compatibility mode and I couldn't get it to boot with secure mode properly. It works.

  5. So I gotta say doing the whole 100days thing has actually given me some pretty good momentum that I was missing previously.. Even if some days it's just look at stuff, run updates, and generally kick tires on things it adds up.

    So yeah shout-out to #100daysofhomelab.

I've been keeping a log.. definitely no reason for anybody to look at it but just sharing for inspiration.. yay yah I'm only 10 days in.

  6. I'm late to the party, but might as well see if I can put some energy into the #100daysofhomelab tag.

Im trying to be generous and just give myself credit for most flavors of productive computering.

  7. Day 13 of #100DaysOfHomeLab - I installed #ClamAV, setup #borg based #backups for some services, still haven't cloned my HDD onto the new #zfs #raid. Will do that soon

  8. Day 8 of #100DaysOfHomelab : Sorted out #backups for a few services, restarted #qbittorrent via #docker this time. I tried to auto boot my #LUKS drive via #TPM2 key have to figure it out now.

  9. I have a small #HomeLab which provides #Pihole, recursive #DNS via #unbound, #jellyfin, #nextcloud and ofcourse #backups for a variety of services which I host or manage.

I started #100DaysOfHomeLab on Jan 10 to get rid of all the #techdebt - streamlining scripts, ensuring backups, full disk encryption, getting more services running.

So far I have bought another 2TD HDD and trying to put my current setup into mirror #raid using #ZFS.

  10. Day 246

Spent the time updating littlelink-server and fixing unit tests. Not the most exciting work, but necessary nonetheless. Fresh docker container building in CI now!

  11. Day 30 of #100daysofhomelab and I tried to look into getting my RB5009 setup, and well… it has the wrong power supply! EU, not UK/Ireland… More messing is required! [Update] Found the right supply, but fell asleep watching TV… more messing tomorrow…

  12. I'm not posting "days" anymore, my days aren't consecutive and I don't always have stuff to say.
I've managed to get my production cluster running with after a period of struggles with . I've also been working with my friend to build fresh base images with and shipping them off to .

  13. Day 20 of #100daysofhomelab and not much going on today. I posted a new video unboxing the ChargeASAP Omega 100W and 200W chargers (embedded below). I also tweaked my daily carry bag, pictured below. More details on that later, it’s been a pain in the ass of a day, but hope to get some updates tomorrow.

  15. Day 210

Just set up aggregation on my server using dual 10 gig SFP+ with DAC. Let’s see how fast this can go 🚀

  20. Day 5: Seem to be perpetually having issues with my cluster. Using for config and database storage and the volumes keep becoming corrupted. Anyone know a fix without buying 3-4 additional servers and begging for no power outages?

  21. Day 4: Despite my production cluster being effectively broken my dev cluster is working just fine. I've got and running. System is a desktop PC with a 5600g and 128gb RAM.

  22. Just out of pure curiousity, but does anyone in their have a or for short? I am contemplating setting one up with a few or low wattage machines, with all set-up instead of on a single machine.

What are you thoughts about that scenario community?

  23. When back and reconfigure my @opnsense box decided to add 2 drive and use with mirroring. A bit snapper on boot up. Next rearrange the dashboard, create vlan, and some firewall rules. Once everything is to my liken will backup the configuration.

  24. Alright, next milestone reached: My new host is getting the syslinux.efi file from the Bootserver. Now to actually configure it.

Also: Far too much time spend fighting a permission problem thinking it was NFS, though it actually was the mount directory itself having the wrong perms. 🤦‍♂️

  25. Upside is that most tiles are still as they were 🙃

Downside is that I either have to use WiFi to connect my server with the network (and I have to add a WiFi card/USB stick for that) or have to open up the ground myself and dig the tube + cable in myself.

I have been in the groundwork myself, but adding WiFi will make the server more flexibel in its placement 🤔

  26. So another update from me, because sometimes things go slow. I've booted a live image and the program is running a check of my four 4TB drives (been running for 86 hrs and done 84% I think the last time I checked).

I did change my decision to use & . After deliberate consideration I've switched my choice to with .
    — no longer NILFS2 because it doesn't have compression and ZFS even includes the kitchen sink

  27. So yesterday when I got home I wasn't greeted by what I was expecting; I saw the selection screen instead of results of the scans. I still have to ask the Mrs if she knew anything happened with the power.

Oh and another setback; we are getting fiber I was hoping that when *they* had the ground open they could also place a tube between my house and my shed. They used a machine to push the fiber from the street to my door ✌️😬

  28. — and RAID10 instead of RAID6 because I think the probability of 2 drives in the same vdev failing right after eachother is too low and the in a vdev is a lot quicker and less wearing of the other drive.

Also read/write performance will be a lot better with both decisions

  29. have build in support, to that'll probably be handled by either or , but it also doesn't do checksumming like / so you don't know if/when you get bit-rot 🤔

Some articles mention supports booting from NILFS2, but an other (possibly a bug at the time) did not but provided a workaround.

All ideas on how to improve my setup are very welcome - 2/2

  30. So after more reading tonight for my *BACKUP* server (that will be its main purpose) I have decided to:
    — create a 4 disk array with
    — have it use as its file system (with continual and manual )
    — use @nixos_org as OS

I understand it have a performance hit, from both these decisions, but this will be the biggest part in my backup strategy.
    TBD:
    — filesystem for OS on SSD :thaenkin:

  31. have build in #RAID support, to that'll probably be handled by either #LVM or #MDraid, but it also doesn't do checksumming like #Btrfs / #ZFS so you don't know if/when you get bit-rot 🤔

Some articles mention #GRUB supports booting from NILFS2, but an other (possibly a #Calamares bug at the time) did not but provided a workaround.
