Redox gets GTK3, Tcl
Redox did the develop cools stuff thing again for a month, so we've got progress to talk about. This past month, GTK3 has been ported to Redox, as well as the Tcl programming language. Support for per-window fractional scaling has been added to Orbital, Redox' desktop environment, but it's still relatively limited for now. There's also new USB gamepad support, which already works in quite a few

Xfce ported to Redox OS
Redox progressed another month, and that means a ton of improvements and new features to talk about. The biggest news this past month is that Xfce has been ported to Redox, which offers a better X11 experience than MATE currently does. There's still some bugs but apparently is works quite well. Redox gets partial window pixel updating, tmux, and more

Never mind just Linux; this would seem to raise serious issues for any group producing their own kernel without an army of lawyers on staff e.g. *BSD, RedoxOS, Graphene, ReactOS, Haiku, illumos and perhaps even plan9 and operating system textbooks and learning frameworks like FluxOSKit. There is furthermore some significant scariness about packets crossing borders rendering ppl liable for violations of all this when passing through spaces wherein USA agents may apprehend them.

Redox OS won't boot on my Thinkpad T530. :blobcatverysad:
I actually got further with Ventoy than with a bare USB key.

"sauf relecture humaine substantielle."
Donc pas totalement fermé 🤔:noai: #NoAI #BanAI #Linux #OpenSource #FLOSS #FOSS #Environnement

🦀 Redox OS — the Rust microkernel OS — has banned all AI/LLM-generated contributions.
Their reasoning:
❌ LLMs produce code that "looks correct" but hides subtle bugs
❌ No chain of accountability for AI-written system code
❌ Legal risk from training data copyright
❌ Erosion of contributor understandingFor OS-level code, this position makes sense. Every line of kernel code has a human who understands it.

Redox gets new CPU scheduler
Another major improvement in Redox: a brand new scheduler which improves performance under load considerably.
We have replaced the legacy Round Robin scheduler with a Deficit Weighted Round Robin scheduler. Due to this, we finally have a way of assigning different priorities to our Process contexts. When running under light load, you may not notice any difference, but under

🚀 nowości w projekcie #RedoxOS https://redox-os.org/news/
To w sumie jest pierwszy system napisany w RUST , obserwuje go od 2 lat rośnie, może w końcu da się go uruchomić w wirtualce
Istnieją też inne projekty "Rust-only":
#TheseusOS: Eksperymentalny system badający nowe sposoby działania struktur OS.
#Kerla: Jądro systemu napisane w Rust, które próbuje być kompatybilne z binariami Linuxa.
#Tock: System operacyjny czasu rzeczywistego (RTOS) dla internetu rzeczy (IoT) – również w całości w #Rust. -
Capability-based security for Redox: namespace and CWD as capabilities
By reimplementing these features using capabilities, we made the kernel simpler by moving complex scheme and namespace management out of it which improved security and stability by reducing the attack surface and possible bugs. At the same time, we gained a means to support more sandboxing feature

Redox bans code regurgitated by “AI”
Redox, the rapidly improving general purpose operating system written in Rust, has amended its contribution policy to explicitly ban code regurgitated by "AI".
Redox OS does not accept contributions generated by LLMs (Large Language Models), sometimes also referred to as "AI". This policy is not open to discussion, any content submitted that is clearly labe

🎉 Redox OS, the hipster operating system nobody asked for, is now proudly enforcing a Certificate of Origin and banning LLMs like it's the 1990s! 🚫📜 Because nothing says "cutting-edge" quite like retro bureaucracy and a firm stance against those pesky large language models. 😏💻

@pointlessone @rayk @tomekw There are frameworks in the making aiming for that, more over there are frameworks aiming at that with use of WebAssembly instead of JavbaScript on the browser side. It's just complex problem to crack. Rails is 21 years old.
The point was you're focused on web frameworks ignoring tons of other stuff built from zero within last 5-6 years, including adding #Rust to #Linux Kernel, #RedoxOS, #Cosmic Desktop and embedded ecosystems.

Redox gets NodeJS, COSMIC’s compositor, and much more
February has been a busy month for Redox, the general purpose operating system written in Rust. For instance, the COSMIC compositor can now run on Redox as a winit window, the first step towards fully porting the compositor from COSMIC to Redox. Similarly, COSMIC Settings now also runs on Redox, albeit with only a very small numbe

Ah yes, #RedoxFS, the #filesystem that discovered the path to #originality by cosplaying as #ZFS and wrapping itself in Rust's warm, self-congratulatory blanket. 🎭🔨 Meanwhile, Redox OS valiantly insists it's new and groundbreaking, as it meticulously reinvents every wheel known to OS design, ensuring no stone is left unturned in its homage to others. 🛞💥

Anything I develop/make has to be usable on the current base level hardware platform

#FrugalComputing #SustanableComputing #NetZeroComputingExpect to run zsh, X11, openbox(?), Emacs, terminal, neomutt, newsboat, mastodon?, tor, i2p?
Test if Gnome is usable... ? xfce? CDE? is GnuStep still active? no desktop?
Get used to do #Email, #UseNet, #Gopher, #IRC, #RSS in #terminal or #Emacs
Use #Emacs and #TeΧ to write (dead tree) letters and missives (PDF?)
Maybe do more in #RawText?
Do callender things again on paper/pencil, #43folders, Whiteboard, etc.. physical things
Expand use of Gopher, Gemini, IndieWeb?
IM.. #XMPP via Dino? +OMEMO
Find a sustainable open source alternative for keybase? Or develop a distributed alternative using tor or i2p? Trust via FOAF?
Develop in #Pascal, #Lisp, #Ruby, #Haskell, #Scheme, #Forth :D
Keep repositories in #mercurial,
maybe source hut?Find an #anonymous #pseudonymous hosting solution... shell account?... like rawtext.club, tildeverse.org, sdf.org .. ...my own?
Get a low power #amd64 box? bc too many FOSS projects are still not platform independent & x86 only v.v
Optimize to run many VMs?
Maybe can run #android in VM and run banking, insurance, and other apps there? Otherwise maybe get an used M1 mac and run the #iOS apps? perhaps some <100 euro android phones will do as well? otherwise get an iPad mini and use that for the next 5-6 yrs
Maybe set up a #FileServer (#NAS?) maybe even network boot? and perhaps even a #Postgresql database? Is having SQL DB available on the local network going to be useful? What about other databases?
