  1. OpenMandriva's accused repo wrecker says it wasn't #sabotage – it was a message

    source: theregister.com/os-platforms/2…

He acknowledged deleting the #GNOME and #COSMIC repositories from #GitHub, removing the corresponding packages from the Cooker #development branch, and publishing a package that obsoleted them. But he said the changes were intended as a protest after #maintainers removed #OneDev #configuration files from multiple #repositories without consulting him, effectively disabling work he had been doing on a new build and mirroring #infrastructure.

  10. For the second year, we are bringing a delegation of #OpenSource #maintainers to #UNOpenSourceWeek in New York.

The experts who actually build and maintain critical digital infrastructure are rarely represented in the international conversations about how that infrastructure is sustained and maintained.

This delegation will change that: bringing practitioner perspectives to our second annual #maintainathon and the full week of events, panels, and exchanges. sovereign.tech/news/un-open-so

  12. Quiet shoutout to the people who keep #Postgres running.

The reviewers catching the edge case. The maintainers of the extension you've used in production for years and never thanked. The folks answering on the mailing list at 11pm so the next person searching that error finds the answer. The ones keeping the docs honest.

If you've got a minute today: send a thank-you, star a repo, reply to a thread.
The ecosystem runs on this. So does #pgEdge.

A good chunk of the most-depended-on open source packages are dead, and there are a lot of different ways for a project to end up that way.

  16. I was kinda burnt-out at the end of last year. I felt like there's so much to do, yet too little to to tackle anything.
For the past two months, I've been experimenting with the "1% rule": instead of few heavy lifts, I did smaller things but like every day.

Open standards shape the digital infrastructure we all rely on. But standards are only as good as the expertise behind them.

  22. #OpenSource used to mean trusting skilled developers to build and maintain good #software so others did not need to learn every language, tool, or best practice themselves.

Now, #SupplyChainAttack and #AISlop have made many projects harder to trust.

Too much software is rushed, poorly understood, or built for hype instead of quality.

#Developers now spend more time checking code, #dependencies, and #maintainers instead of simply building software.

#AI was supposed to reduce cognitive load😒

  24. Open standards shape critical digital infrastructure. But the people implementing those standards are often missing from the processes that define them.

In a survey of over 150 #OpenSource #Maintainers, we found strong interest in standards participation and specific structural barriers to sustained engagement.

Learn more about what maintainers told us, and how the new #SovereignTechStandards network aims to close that gap. Applications are open until 19 May 2026!

  26. #OpenSource: Free for You, Profitable for Them.

OpenSource means: #software where the #sourcecode is freely available and often costs nothing. Sounds great, but there is a catch.

#Companies like #Microsoft, #Google and #Amazon fund large #OpenSource #projects not out of #idealism, but because they build profitable #cloudservices on top of them and pocket the money.

Small #developers who charge for their work barely stand a chance against "free". Yet thousands of hours go into these projects. The #maintainers, the people who keep these projects alive, often work unpaid until they hit #burnout.

#Free does not automatically mean ethical. It is often just convenient.

  28. I am so sick of maintaining LinkAce right now. The only feedback I get is stupid security vulnerabilities and why features are not being implemented.
I am just one click away from archiving the whole damn project. 🤬

  32. The register is reporting that a bunch of major tech companies are throwing some parking meter money at Linux to "Fix the AI-slop"

Its worth a note at least.

    theregister.com/2026/03/18/lin

Not sure how to react as::

    - No Shit Bat-persons !

    - This is not unlike the Nasty Orange Bloke paying a billion dollars into the "Fib Jar"

    - - Its not nearly enough to cover the bullshit, but it does do a nice job of "green washing" the brand...

    - It acknowledges the "problem".
(fucking disaster for Maintainers ... at least. )

    - One chaps chump change is another's path to economic lock-in ...

-- Still , hopefully, they get way more than they pay for.

    The Register cover it beter-er.
