We have appreciated the #UNOpenSourceWeek 2026 content on our timeline, giving us a glimpse into some of the insights emerging from the panels, workshops, hackathons, and community-led events at the United Nations headquarters in New York City!

I’ve been fortunate to be able to attend the UN Open Source Week event again this year at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City where they bring the open source community together with government and policy folks to facilitate collaboration and information sharing. At #OSPOsforGood Day at #UNOpenSourceWeek, Policy and Research Lead Paul Sharratt spoke to a standing-room-only audience on the panel “Financing Open Source and Digital Public Goods: A Multi-Stakeholder Approach.”

Paul made the case for why open source infrastructure requires dedicated public investment. Critical open source is a classic market failure. The software provides enormous economic and social value, but private actors have little incentive to invest in maintaining it:
