Same thing with #opensource #digitalcommons #digitalautonomy or #digitalsouvereignity: they are all part of a bigger discussion and dynamics, that is just saying: technology needs to be of the people, for the people, by the people---how do we do this

  11. Open tools are not just technical choices. They are democratic ones.

This is the principle behind the digital commons: that the systems shaping our learning, civic life, data, and participation should not be locked away from the people who depend on them.

  16. Announcing a Community Call with Kollicloud.de and CoopCloud.tech

While many people think their only option is to depend on BigTech for collaborative workspaces and communication tooling, there are in fact many alternatives.

Apps for filesharing, calendering, contacts and for email. Or apps to work in agile mode, to run your projects with powerful Kanban boards for decentralised teams. Instant messaging and chat that are decentralised, so people can connect with one app to all their diverse organisations and communities they belong to.

Tech based in solidarity, commoning, security and privacy, instead of extractivism, monopolies, distopian futures, injustice and surveillance.

  35. AI and the Digital Commons: Don't Let the Asphalt Bury the Garden

I’ve spent 30 years watching tech cycles come and go, from the first dial-up modems in rural Austria to the mesh networks I’m currently stringing across the Australian bush. Each time a “next big thing” arrives, we see the same pattern: a frantic rush to centralise, followed by a slow, painful enclosure of what should have been a common resource. The current noise around AI in open source feels different. It feels heavier. There’s a justified fear that AI-generated code is hollowing out our commons. Maintainers are being buried under a drift of unvetted, mediocre pull requests, while a handful of platform monopolies strip-mine decades of community work to feed their proprietary black boxes.

  40. 😅 My “a dozen interns on cocaine” metaphor for LLMs made Beth Noveck laugh enough that she made it into the title of this interview. I'm happy that one of my intellectual self-defense tips against AI gets shared more broadly. More details about it in a thread.

There is way more in this interview than that metaphor, like difficulties in funding for #DigitalCommons and how I believe LLMs can and cannot be useful to #RulesAsCode.

  45. Opti-Morons and the Death of Critical Thought

I’m tired. Not the kind of tired that a good night’s sleep or a weekend off the grid can fix. It’s a deeper, more pervasive exhaustion—the fatigue of living in a culture of relentless, performative positivity. In the tech world, we’re told to “crush it,” to “move fast,” and to embrace every new “game-changer” with uncritical enthusiasm. If you’re not a believer, you’re a “naysayer” or, worse, a “blocker” of progress.
