Hi @bert_hubert it is fun that "we" might have some leverage here, but this isn't really #TechnologicalSovereignty.

The key problem with politicians talking about sovereignty is that they think we can be sovereign if we'd have European Googles and the likes.

But until we build truely #DigitalCommons, as you know well, with open standards interoperability, decentralised and distributed architectures and community-driven open source, we can overcome bigtech and maybe even preserve our democratic foundations.

On my way to #Helsinki for the #Polis #Voxit #Hackathon 🥰 to explore and setup EU #opencollaboration on #digitalcommons for better online public discourse. Making some images to present my ideas.

I've been increasingly concerned about the corporate monopoly over frontier LLMs. While many ethically-minded people choose to boycott these models, I believe passive resistance alone cannot break the structural grip of big tech. To truly “liberate” these technologies and turn them into public goods, we need to look beyond moral high grounds and engage with the material basis of AI—specifically compute, data, and the relations of production.

I've written two posts exploring this through the lens of historical materialism. The first piece analyzes why current “open source” definitions struggle with LLMs, and the second discusses what it means to “act materialistically” in our imperfect world. My goal is to suggest a path forward that moves from mere boycotting to a more proactive, structural socialization of AI infrastructure.

Aanvraag voor EDIC Digital Commons ingediend

Op 8 juli 2025 hebben Frankrijk, Duitsland, Italië en Nederland de aanvraag ondertekend en ingediend bij de Europese Commissie om de European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (EDIC) Digitale Gemeenschapsgoederen (Digital Commons) op te richten. 

Het doel van de EDIC is om de digitale autonomie van Europa en haar lidstaten te versterken. De EDIC Digitale Gemeenschapsgoederen sluit direct aan op de recent gepubliceerde Nederlandse Digitaliseringsstrategie (NDS).

Het vergroten van de digitale autonomie

Om de digitale autonomie te vergroten, is het nodig dat Europa meer producten en diensten zelf ontwikkelt. De EDIC Digitale Gemeenschapsgoederen zal functioneren als een platform, zowel fysiek als digitaal. Om bedrijven, maatschappelijke organisaties, wetenschappers en overheden met elkaar te verbinden. Dit helpt om financiering sneller te regelen, ondersteuning te bieden en netwerken te vergroten.

Beslissing Europese Commissie

Voor nu wachten de lidstaten de beslissing af van de Europese Commissie. Na goedkeuring zal de Europese Unie bijna 2,5 miljoen euro financieren van het EDIC-budget. De betrokken lidstaten dragen samen ruim 2,8 miljoen euro bij.
