  2. What I’ve Been Up To

Well, it has been a long time since I’ve written a blog post! I honestly didn’t realize how long it had been until I sat down and thought about everything that has been going on lately. Life has been busy, and most of my free time has been spent doing what I love most—crocheting. So, I figured it was time for a little catch-up and an update on what I’ve been up to lately. Crocheting, Crocheting, and More Crocheting If you’ve been following along with Duffney’s Bird Barn, you […]

  3. One of the things that irk me is that we don't really have a way of tracking the long-term growth and changes of the #Fediverse .

Yes, there is fedidb.com , but it only seems to track user statistics for the last 30 days. Currently, the "monthly user base" seems to over at slightly over 1.3 million, which seems more than it was last year - but we don't really have a good long-term data set.

How does the user base of the Fediverse grow? What are specific events that cause the Fediverse to grow? And what differentiates accounts that stay from accounts that eventually stop being active?

There are a _lot_ of scientific examinations of commercial social media platforms. One would think that the Fediverse, with its open architecture, would also make such analysis possible, but I am not aware of any.

TITLE: Opinion: Could long-term AI use lead to isolation? We need to find out — but researchers need better access to data

    URL: statnews.com/2026/10/26/cumula

OpenAI recently announced that it is tracking signs of user distress across sessions, rather than only within them, and using that information to inform model responses. The announcement follows a wave of new safeguards for mental health and well-being conversations with artificial intelligence at OpenAI and elsewhere, such as parental controls for teens, usage limits and break reminders, and crisis detection and referral. Policymakers have also moved to address associated risks, with a dozen states now requiring companion chatbot operators to disclose to users that their tools are not human, and to institute crisis referral procedures.

This attention, within AI companies and legislatures, is important and urgent. But it is directed almost entirely at acute harm from interacting with AI, rather than the cumulative harm that develops over time, such as the gradual replacement of one’s connections with friends and family by AI interaction.

  6. There are 3 hour youtube videos that feel incredibly quick, and there are 10 minute long videos that feel like an excruciating agony to sit through.

Length is never the issue, but a lot of people could benefit from getting to the fucking point and cutting out redundant parts.

  7. Just got done prepping a review of a game I've been sitting on for far too long. The review, not the game. No one sits on games. They play them. Or keep them forever in their backlog. Or wishlist.

    Anyway... review hype? 😎

  8. Whether you call it “ripping” or “remixing”, the BBS scene had a long tradition of adapting and reusing earlier ANSI art.

My latest deep dive traces the origins of several logon screens from "Fire Escape's BBS Directory HQ" in St. Louis, Missouri, and explores how Fire Escape and others transformed the original images. Some of them get kinda surreal.

  13. Terland strikes late as United end Manchester City’s winning start in WSL
By Tom Garry at the Progress With Unity Stadium

At long last, a weakness has been spotted. Finally, the 100% winning start ends for Manchester City, much to the pleasure of Manchester United, who struck late through Elisabeth Terland to claim a point in a well-contested and at times breathless Manchester derby.

  14. Some industries pollute more than others.
Some industries output long-lifetime pollutants such as PFAS, plastics, carbon dioxide.
Long-lifetime molecules mostly cannot be taken away but we can stop emitting them.
Therefore a priority is to reduce pollution activities (such as fossil energy, deforestation).
A simple solution would be to phase them out, like we did with asbestos or the CFC ban: ozone.unep.org/treaties/montre
