When most people think about the classic BBS door game Barren Realms Elite, they probably remember the drippy logo from John Dailey's 1999 release.
But, in fact, BRE went through *many* different title screens during the years it was under active development by its creator, Mehul Patel.

For the last 25 years, Barren Realms Elite (BRE) has been frozen in amber, with the same ANSI title screen.
But it was preceded by _lots_ of other designs from 1992-97.

Guten Morgen. Nun habe ich im #Datenschutz langjährige Verträge im Ausland. #Südtirol seit mehreren Jahren und nun auch #Zypern. Das geht alles nur wegen dem #Internet. Als ich 1993 meine erste #BBS betrieben hatte wusste ich, dass das Netz für mich persönlich ein Teil meines Lebens wird und mir Wohlstand bringt. Danke, lieber Tim Berners-Lee!

i’m not sure what i expected when i received a copy of @aaronareed’s 50 Years of Text Games. i was mostly afraid that it would be an encyclopedic mishmash of wikipedia facts on IF.
to my complete surprise it is extremely well-written, has original interviews with developers, and a demonstrates a strong understanding of textual game engines and scripting languages.
the fact that Aaron took the time to write entire chapters for Tradewars and LambdaMOO blows me away - I did not expect MUDs and BBS games to earn their way into IF history. hell, there’s even a chapter on Achaea!
if you’re into IF, game history, or how the sausage is made with game development, this book is an exceptional read.

Seit ein paar Wochen setze ich mich ein wenig mit analogen #Modems auseinander und versuche auch die Technik dahinter zu verstehen. Die Doku und Specs sind gar nicht mal so schlecht. Leider sieht es mit den Dial-Ups aber nicht so gut aus. Verbindungen über #VoIP habe ich zu den drei #BBS en noch nicht herstellen können - wird aber weiter getestet.

Still, political ANSI art was more of an exception in the early 1990s. PD artists were more likely to be inspired by pop culture or the theme of a particular BBS.
When the 1992 presidential election came around, not many PD ANSI artists depicted candidates or key moments.
St. Louis-based Dave Hartmann was one of the few. Here are a couple fun screens he drew.

In 1990-91, America was involved in a very different conflict along the Persian Gulf. Polls showed Americans strongly supported the war effort.
On BBSes, this led to a profusion of patriotic, sometimes humorous, war-themed ANSI art. Aaron Kuhn (@DialupDownload) collected some in 2014:

In an alternate universe somewhere, nobody has heard of “webcomics.” Instead, there are thousands of “telecomics.”
In 1992, Don Lokke Jr. coined the term “telecomics” to describe his new digital comic strips, drawn primarily in the ANSI art format and distributed online through BBSes.

Been working on a project, a #meshtastic #BBS that runs directly on a #ESP32 node without needing a #rpi zero running the BBS. I have an alpha up and running and added a daily Wordle game. it has bulletins, Email, and a neat QSL feature for radio nerds.
#meshcore has a "room" firmware with basic bulletin posting. This Does a lot more than that, almost as much as the major python BBS systems that need a raspberry pie to run.

Trying out #Mastodonochrome by @simontatham on my trusty old #DEC #VT420 terminal.
Generally works ok, but all normal text is flashing for some reason. And it's not respecting my ISO-8859-1 codepage preference.
But it's fun that it's running at all! It does have a #BBS feeling. 😄

In the decade after Ward Christensen and Randy Suess created the first BBS, there was a growing tension between commerce and the common good.
BBSes were born in a spirit of openness and sharing, but it wasn't just a hobby anymore, according to folks like Jack Rickard and Phil Becker. It was "an emerging growth industry of unprecedented opportunity."

This was kind of my experience. But it was when BBS then web forums went to Six Degrees then Friendster. MySpace was mainly great for music discovery. Then Facebook walled garden destroyed it all.
