My Commodore 1570 disk drive is fairly clean and looks good on the inside, no signs of corrosion or bulging capacitors. Quite quirky this one - the mainboard is obviously meant for something else (that being the 1571 in a totally different case). It's screwed into a metal plate with custom mounts to make it sit in the 1541-style case. The footprints for the 6-pin DIN serial connectors (front right in the picture) aren't in the right position to fit the ports in the back, and are wired up to a daughterboard in the back that also functions as the unit's power supply. There's also bodge wires galore on both sides on the PCB. The engineers did what they had to do to make it work, love it! #commodore #commodore1570 #commodore128 #retrocomputing

With the PS3 serviced and working it's time for a new project. This one arrived in the mail today. I wanted a drive for my Commodore 128. I have a 1571 that's beyond repair, with bad drive heads. A new drive mech will probably cost the same as a new drive, and they're quite steep. This one, however, uses the same mechanism as many Commodore 1541s do, and those are plentyful. If something's wrong with the logic board, I have a spare for that (it's the same as in the 1571). The downside is of course that it's only a single sided drive, but it supports fast burst mode for the 128 and can also do MFM disks for CP/M . It's a bit of a rarity, these were only made for a short period. No idea if it's working, but that's the fun of it. #commodore #commodore128 #commodore 1570 #retrocomputing
