Nothing beats coming home after a long day, only to find these absolute chaos demons perched in the most absurd, physics-defying spot possible. 🐐💥
How did you even get up there?!

Put in some work with the rake yesterday to clear this piece of land. 🌿🧹 Seeing the old doghouse, the chicken coop, and the vintage manger standing clear brings back so much rustic charm and history. 🪵🏡✨

I'd always thought that my polytunnel storage method for logs was quite effective. I was judging this by the weight of the logs. The weight was judged by me holding the logs in my hand, not very scientific. I'm pleased that my new moisture meter is confirming my guesstimate. 13.9% is very acceptable.
The key is keeping the door of the polytunnel open, to allow air to circulate.

My Garden Was Attacked: The Deer Ate Everything!
I spent months growing my garden, watched everything grow, and was just about ready to start harvesting. Then the deer decided my garden was their personal buffet. If you garden, you probably know how exciting this time of year can be. You've spent months planting seeds, watering, weeding, watching for pests, and checking your plants every day. Eventually, all that work starts paying off. The tomatoes are finally covered in fruit. The zucchini and squash are growing. The potatoes are […]https://duffneysbirdbarn.wordpress.com/2026/09/21/my-garden-was-attacked-the-deer-ate-everything/

I just overheard a conversation involving my neighbors who raise chickens.
Wife to hubby: "Could you put my cock up there? My big golden cock? You know, my weathervane?"
I had to go inside to LOL because I was eavesdropping. But OMGs! I needed a good laugh!

I took pictures of these ridiculously photogenic crocuses in my parents’ garden. Did you know these flowers also come in yellow? They grew in the middle of the lawn, not caring about anyone or anything! 😅

Did you know all spades have a width of 18cm?
I didn't, until to-day. I took a tape measure with me to check the sizes. I wanted a new spade with the same width as my broken spade. Taking a tape measure was superfluous. All 12 spades I looked at had the same 18cm width (except for mini spades).
I don't know if this is some UK convention, or if there is a British (European) Standard for spade widths.

I went to the local town to get another load of pallets (a full dozen, this time), and to get a new spade.
I went to two establishments that sold tools. Most of the spades were in the price range of £35-50. Almost all had wooden handles, except two. One of those had a plastic shaft (no, really), and, surprisingly, felt very solid. It also had a solid price of £50. The other one had a powder-coated metal shaft. This one I bought, for a very reasonable £17.

I'd like to thank BT Openreach for kindly donating the strainer posts for my project. 😉
More about this project in the coming weeks.

The rain held off this afternoon, so, I decided to put in the strainer posts for a fencing project I'd been planning for a while.
It was hard work, as usual, due to thin soil, huge rocks and big tree roots criss-crossing everywhere. Nevertheless, I was making good progress.
Then this happened.
Bummer!Need to get a replacement on Monday.

The pallets will be made into, what I call, log cages. One pallet for the base, four pallets around the sides, and sometimes a pallet for the roof. I don't have a source of free/cheap roofing, so, the roof is made of whatever I have available. Construction takes all of 5 minutes.
Each log cage holds approximately 1 cubic metre of wood.
"... and here is one I made earlier."
