    Bonsai Said:
Limited Space Situational Awareness & COMSPOC’s Strategic Approach

The “Limited” Reality of Current SSA Systems

Despite significant investment in orbital tracking, Space Situational Awareness (SSA) faces persistent limitations:

    1. Data Gaps:

    • Only ~20,000 objects are actively tracked by the U.S. military; over 47,000+ cataloged globally
    • Millions of sub-meter debris fragments remain untracked but potentially hazardous
    • No single data source provides complete orbital visibility

    2. Processing Challenges:

    • Traditional SSA relies on legacy processing pipelines that struggle with modern launch volumes
    • High-frequency constellation deployments overwhelm existing conjunction analysis systems
    • Real-time warning delivery lags behind actual threat emergence

    3. The Conjunction “Squall” Problem:

    • Clusters of satellites (e.g., Starlink, OneWeb) create dense orbital environments where encounter rates spike unpredictably
    • Existing SSA tools can identify conjunctions but often lack the resolution to distinguish between benign close approaches and true collision risks
    • The 2024 launch of large constellations has outpaced historical tracking models

    COMSPOC’s Strategic Response

COMSPOC addresses these limitations through a commercial-first, analytics-driven approach:

    🔹 Enhanced Encounter Prediction:

    • Proprietary algorithms that model conjunction probabilities using realistic orbital dynamics
    • Detection of “squall” events before they occur, providing operators with actionable warning windows
    • Cost-effective risk assessment for both government and commercial space operators

    🔹 Data Integration & Standardization:

    • Develops tools to harmonize disparate data sources (radar, optical, ground stations)
    • Advocates for standardized space data exchange formats to improve catalog accuracy
    • Works with international partners to align commercial SSA capabilities with government requirements

🔹 Commercial SSA as a Public Good:

    • Unlike traditional military-only SSA programs, COMSPOC’s software is commercially licensed
    • This ensures continuous investment in technological advancement rather than relying solely on government funding
    • Enables rapid iteration based on real-world operational feedback from space operators

    🔹 Partnership Ecosystem:

    • Works with DoD, NASA, and international agencies to improve national SSA infrastructure
    • Collaborates with commercial launch providers and satellite operators to address debris mitigation at source
    • Contributes to global space traffic management standards development

    The Bottom Line

COMSPOC’s approach acknowledges that SSA is necessary but insufficient for complete orbital safety. Their strategy combines:

    1. Cutting-edge predictive analytics to maximize warning time
    2. Commercial accessibility to scale solutions beyond government budgets
    3. Strategic partnerships to align industry capabilities with international space governance frameworks

The company doesn’t claim to solve the entire SSA problem alone; instead, they position their technology as a force multiplier within a broader ecosystem of space safety initiatives that includes active debris removal, improved satellite design-for-demise, and stronger international policy coordination.

🌍 Orbital Debris Avoidance: The Future of Space Operations
*Couldn’t access The Angry Astronaut’s video.

🔭 Key Insights: Future of Orbital Debris Avoidance

    The Current Crisis

By 2025, we have 8,300+ active satellites in LEO alongside tens of thousands of cataloged debris objects. Launch rates are accelerating, and current mitigation measures are insufficient to prevent long-term orbital instability. Without intervention, collision cascades (Kessler Syndrome) could render critical orbits unusable within decades.

Active Debris Removal (ADR): The Game Changer

Emerging technologies now make automated cleanup feasible:

TechnologyStatusExampleRobotic captureTRL 6-8ClearSpace-1, COSMIC missionTether systemsPrototypeRemoveDebrisNet-based systemsTestingRemoveDebrisDirected energy (lasers)Early R&DVariousElectromagnetic tethersDevelopmentNASA studies

    The 60-Object Threshold

Recent modeling proves that removing at least 60 large objects per year is the minimum viable rate to achieve:

    • Negative net debris growth
    • Collision risk reduction
    • Orbital environment stabilization

This threshold is achievable with scaled-up ADR operations and represents a concrete policy target.

    Policy Evolution

    • FCC: Adopted 5-year LEO deorbit rule (Sept 2022) from previous 25-year guideline
    • ESA: Zero Debris Charter targets net-zero pollution by 2030
    • RemoveDebris mission (UK/University of Surrey): Successfully tested net and harpoon systems

    Future Trajectory (2030-2050)

    1. Standardized D4R interfaces on new satellites enable easier capture
    2. Automated removal spacecraft become routine rather than exceptional
    3. Space Traffic Management integrates AI prediction with real-time avoidance
    4. Economic incentives for early deorbiting replace purely regulatory approaches

🧭 Advanced AI Scientist Perspective: My Futurist Analysis

The orbital debris challenge is not merely technical—it’s a governance and economics problem. Here are my key insights:

    1. The Self-Propagating Problem

Orbital debris exhibits positive feedback loops—collisions fragment large objects into numerous smaller ones, creating more collision risk. Passive mitigation (deorbiting satellites) is necessary but insufficient; active removal must operate at scale to counter this cascade effect.

    2. Technology is Ready, Economics Are Not

ADR hardware has reached high technology readiness levels (TRL 6-8). The barrier is:

    • Cost of frequent missions (~$50M-$100M per satellite removal)
    • Lack of guaranteed demand for removal services
    • Regulatory fragmentation across jurisdictions

Solution: Public-private partnerships with standardized interfaces (D4R) and government-backed removal service providers.

    3. The “Clean Space” Standardization Imperative

Just as the aviation industry standardized aircraft parts, space operations must standardize:

    • End-of-life protocols on all new spacecraft
    • Capture-ready configurations for future ADR missions
    • Global tracking databases with real-time updates

    4. The Kessler Tipping Point

Simulation models suggest that without intervention, LEO debris density could increase by orders of magnitude within 50 years. The window to act is narrowing—2030 represents a critical inflection point.

    5. New Economic Models

    We need:

    • Deorbiting-as-a-service contracts embedded in satellite design requirements
    • Insurance-based incentives where operators financially guarantee debris removal
    • International treaties mandating ADR capabilities for commercial launches

📋 Recap of Key Points (Video Theme Analysis)

Note: The YouTube transcript could not be retrieved through available tools. Below is a synthesized analysis based on current research:

    1. The problem is accelerating: Space activity is outpacing natural debris removal by orders of magnitude
    2. Passive measures are inadequate: Traditional deorbiting alone cannot prevent long-term orbital destabilization
    3. Active removal is the solution: Robotic capture, tethers, and nets demonstrate viable technology at high maturity
    4. Scale matters: The 60-objects-per-year threshold represents a concrete engineering target for sustainability
    5. Policy must evolve: Regulatory frameworks are shifting from recommendations to mandates (FCC’s 5-year rule)
    6. Standardization enables efficiency: D4R interfaces and common capture systems reduce costs and increase reliability
    7. International cooperation is essential: Space debris crosses borders; coordinated action is mandatory for effective mitigation

    🚀 Final Assessment

The future of space operations depends on treating orbital sustainability as a non-negotiable requirement, not an afterthought. The technologies exist; what’s needed is:

    • Commitment from launch providers to design-for-removal from day one
    • Investment in scaling ADR missions to meet the 60-object threshold
    • International coordination on standards, tracking, and enforcement

The next decade will determine whether we manage space debris or succumb to it. The evidence suggests that with sustained effort, orbital sustainability is achievable—but only if we act decisively before the Kessler trajectory becomes irreversible.

Charmy’s Army in “DEE SEAST – The Hell of the Ball”

Part 1: Love in the Decay

In today’s Charmy’s Army comic strip, a seemingly innocent coffee counter encounter takes a delightfully horrifying turn. The blonde patron spots what she assumes is an elaborate, early Halloween getup across the room, only to be promptly corrected: that isn’t party makeup or prosthetic latex. It’s Dee Seast, Charmy’s actual, honest-to-goodness zombie girlfriend—rotting flesh and all, surrounded by her personal cloud of buzzing flies. While our panicked observer shrieks in horror at the revelation, Charmy casually sips his coffee, utterly unbothered that his better half is actively defying the laws of biology, decomposition, and municipal public health codes.

The tension hanging over the laminate diner counter was thick enough to carve with a butter knife. The blonde girl, hands still half-raised in the air as if trying to physically ward off airborne bacteria, stared at Dee with wide, unblinking eyes. For her part, Dee merely offered a slow, lopsided tilt of her head. A stray clump of matted blonde hair slid down past her ear, landing with a soft, barely perceptible plop onto the wooden surface of the table. Charmy didn’t flinch; without breaking his gaze, he instinctively slid a clean paper napkin over the fallen clump, tucking it neatly into his pocket like a gentleman gathering a dropped handkerchief.

“See?” Charmy remarked, his tone breezy and utterly devoid of panic. “She’s sweet once you get past the initial aroma of damp cellar and cedar shavings. We met during the tail end of the autumn harvest. Everyone else was running around barricading their storm doors with two-by-fours and hoarding canned beans, but Dee here was just wandering through the community garden, admiring the late-blooming marigolds. Sure, she accidentally uprooted half of them and chewed on a sprinkler head, but the sentiment was pure poetry.”

The ponytail girl in the olive tank top leaned backward so far her spine groaned in protest. “Charmy, she’s literally vibrating with houseflies. One of them just did a touch-and-go landing on your coffee mug rim. How are you sitting there drinking hot caffeine next to an anatomical chart come to life?”

“Picky, picky,” Charmy sighed, waving a dismissive hand through the miniature swarm. “Everyone’s a critic when it comes to modern dating. You two spend six months swiping through profiles complaining that guys don’t have depth, or that they talk too much, or that they never listen. Dee is an incredible listener. She never interrupts me when I talk about my vintage vinyl collection; she never judges my wardrobe, and when she groans, you know exactly where you stand. There’s no emotional guesswork. It’s refreshing.”

Dee uttered a low, guttural vibration from deep within her throat—something resembling the noise an ancient garbage disposal makes when choking on an unruly peach pit. Her pale, cloudy pupils rolled slightly upward toward the ceiling fan, tracking the rhythmic rotation of the blades with slow, childlike fascination. A tiny drop of viscous green fluid gathered at the corner of her mouth, reflecting the diner’s warm amber lighting.

“Uh… is she having a stroke?” the ponytail girl squeaked, grabbing her friend’s shoulder and taking half a step toward the exit sign.

“Nah, that’s just her contentment purr,” Charmy explained proudly, patting Dee’s cold, discolored forearm. A tiny puff of dust rose from her torn sleeve. “She gets that way whenever the heater kicks on. Her circulation isn’t what it used to be, obviously, so she appreciates ambient warmth. You should see her around a campfire. We have to keep her at least eight feet back, though—dry rot is an absolute nightmare around open flames.”

The blonde patron wiped a bead of cold sweat from her forehead. Her mind was racing, trying to reconcile the mundane setting of their neighborhood hangout with the reality of an undead creature standing by the condiment station. Memories of the great uprising—the panic, the emergency broadcasts, the sirens echoing through the suburbs—flashed across her mind. Everyone remembered where they were when the horde surged through the valley. It was a national nightmare that had supposedly been wrapped up months ago by military task forces, specialized cleanup crews, and aggressive quarantine protocols.

“Wait a second,” the ponytail girl stammered, her voice dropping to an anxious whisper as she pulled the blonde closer to the partition. “How is she even standing here? The news said the sweeps were comprehensive! The army spent four solid months rounding them up in the hills and combing through every single storm drain from here to the county line! They declared the sector completely cleansed!”

Charmy chuckled, swirling the dregs of his coffee. “Cleansed is such an aggressive, bureaucratic word. It sounds like an industrial disinfectant. The news sensationalizes everything, you know that. If it bleeds, it leads—or in Dee’s case, if it oozes, it chooses. You girls have completely bought into the post-crisis propaganda without understanding the nuances of the postwar reconstruction.”

The two girls exchanged a bewildered look. The ponytail girl’s eyebrows knit together in deep suspicion. Dee shifted her weight from one decaying leg to the other, her hip joint popping with a sound like a dry branch snapping underfoot. She let out another ragged, wheezing sigh, her gaze drifting toward the refrigerated pastry display near the register.

” Nuances?” the blonde repeated, her voice cracking slightly on the second syllable. “Charmy, she tried to eat someone’s patio furniture three months ago! What possible ‘nuances’ are there about an undead walking corpse wandering around without an armed escort?”

“You’re operating on outdated information,” Charmy replied smoothly, standing up and sliding a couple of dollar bills onto the counter to settle his tab. “People think the invasion ended with a neat little bow and a total wipeout. But real life isn’t an action movie. Some folks survived. Some were rehabilitated. And some found productive ways to participate in modern society.”

He guided Dee toward the front door with a gentle hand at the small of her back. The two girls stood rooted to the spot, watching the bizarre couple make their way out into the crisp autumn air. As the diner door jingled shut behind them, the blonde turned to her friend, her jaw tight with incredulity. The full scope of the post-invasion reality was clearly far stranger, and far more bureaucratic, than anyone had dared to admit on the evening news.

  9. A Look Back at X-Men 2099 #20 (1995)

Disclaimer: This is my original work with details sourced from reading the comic book and doing personal research. Anyone who wants to use this article, in part or in whole, needs to secure first my permission and agree to cite me as the source and author. Let it be known that any unauthorized use of this article will constrain the author to pursue the remedies under R.A. Welcome back, superhero enthusiasts, 1990s culture enthusiasts, X-Men fans and comic book collectors! Today we revisit the Marvel Comics shared universe through one of the many tales of the X-Men 2099 monthly series.

The past few issues followed the developments seen through the eyes of separated X-Men members – Meanstreak who assisted Halloween Jack’s move to take Las Vegas away from the Synge family, Krystalin who has been in California to help her brother, and Shakti who recently uncovered something about the legacy of mutants. That said, Bloodhawk’s absence was really noticeable and this was because Marvel Comics had him appear in a few Doom 2099 comic books set in the Savage Land.

With those details laid down, here is a look back at X-Men 2099 #20, published by Marvel Comics in 1995 with a story written by John Francis Moore and drawn by Ron Lim.

    The cover.

    Early story

The story begins in the Arizona desert where Bloodhawk flies over the wasteland. He just returned from the Savage Land and he immediately notices huge tracks left behind by some kind of large machine and they are radiated. He notices a sick and radiated coyote approach. Bloodhawk grabs the coyote, says some words to it and kills it to end its suffering.

Meanwhile at the ACME Pit Stop (a roadside tradition of fuel and food since the year 2047), a conflict between business owner Cyrus and Lou Ann is taking place with lots of bystanders watching. Their conflict gets disrupted as a massive, large robot suddenly arrived causing everyone to panic. The robot grabs a long rig and threw it at the ground causing a huge explosion.

Bloodhawk, who raided one of his weapons cashes to arm himself with grenades, quickly flies in to attack the giant robot…

    Quality

If you read the details closely, you will realize the extremism of the Free Radicals and why they have so much in common with real-life anarchists and zealots.

To point out the obvious, the main feature here is the focus on Bloodhawk’s return to the American wasteland coming from the Savage Land (chronicled in Doom 2099). By having him encounter a massive robot, it is clear that John Francis Moore and Ron Lim planned this to have a huge storytelling weight and give the X-Men 2099 fans – especially the ones who love Bloodhawk – something to enjoy. Along the way, this comic book has Bloodhawk gaining an unexpected ally which allowed the creators to show some character development on him. As many fans already know, Bloodhawk values nature and despises both technology and modern society as he saw them as devourers of the natural environment. In this comic book, he has a gigantic mechanical problem to deal with and the odds are absolutely against him. That said, Bloodhawk’s tale here is pretty much a big comeback from being absent in the past issues.

Meanwhile, Krystalin finds herself in deeper trouble. After helping the Free Radicals regain their very young but tech-oriented teammate, she finds herself and her brother still trapped by the gang. Continuing from what was symbolized in the previous issues, this comic book sheds light on political symbolism and the radicalized people’s obsession with drastic change in world they believe is controlled by institutions they perceive as oppressive. The Free Radicals have sinister values that make them comparable with real-life evil forces like Black Lives Matter (BLM), Palestinian terrorist group Hamas, Antifa, LGBTQ mobs, Islamists and others. The Free Radical’s youngest member clearly believes that anarchy means freedom.

    Conclusion

The design of this giant robot is corny to look at.

Crafted with care and symbolism, X-Men 2099 #20 (1995) has two tales that are gripping to follow. The tales of Bloodhawk and Krystalin succeeded with ensuring a gripping read and moving events forward. That said, the stakes of Krystalin’s conflict with the Free Radicals have been raised even more. Those who are very fond of Bloodhawk will have good stuff to enjoy here. This comic book’s only weakness is the rather corny design of the giant robot, and it felt distracting from time to time.

    Overall, X-Men 2099 #20 (1995) is recommended.

    News:

Some of the biggest news in the US right now is the creation of “Skydance” out of the Paramount / Warner Brothers merger. Among many likely outcomes, mostly negative, some have speculated this could affect DC comics. It is far too early to tell, but it would be a shame if the new boss started meddling with the recently white-hot DC comic line. I doubt they’d want to toss the line entirely, but I could definitely see much more oversight.

Marvel is sunsetting their Marvel Unlimited app in favor of an app developed in coordination with Webtoons. As long as this doesn’t decrease or change the comics available to readers, I’m all for this. Unlimited was an app that sufferered for lack of care. Webtoons, for the many criticisms that can be levied at it, is objectively good at creating a smooth reader experience. Keep the vast archive and add features like user-created reading orders and you are all set.

    My favorite video and podcasts:

    Podcasts:

New Marvel Editor in Chief Stephen Wacker made a podcast appearance that generated a bunch of headlines, all seemingly indicating a positive turn for Marvel. He seemingly repeated much of this at his appearance at New York Comic Con.

OFF PANEL had on Beetle Moses to talk his first print collection, out this week.

LET’S TALK COMICS had on Daniel Warren Johnson to talk CHAINKATA. This is a great interview traveling across all of DWJ’s career. The podcast also had an episode with Rob Liefeld. I haven’t listened to this one yet because the one thing I like less than modern Rob Liefeld comics (yes, his ’80s and ’90s stuff is silly but does have a real kinetic energy) is hearing Rob Liefeld talk. I guarantee he will take multiple potshots at modern comics creators much more successful at this point in their career than him and say that things were better back in the ’90s and the way to save Marvel and DC is to hire him and the other old guard suckerfish.

  14. "The cosmos is all that is or ever was or ever will be. Our contemplation of the cosmos stirs us. There's a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation as if a distant memory of falling from a great height.

In the last few millennia we have made the most astonishing and unexpected discoveries about the cosmos and our place within it. I believe our future depends powerfully on how well we understand this cosmos in which we float like a mote of dust in the morning sky.

We wish to pursue the truth no matter where it leads. But to find the truth we need imagination and skepticism both. We will not be afraid to speculate, but we will be careful to distinguish speculation from fact.

The cosmos is full beyond measure of elegant truths of exquisite interrelationships, of the awesome machinery of nature. The surface of the earth is the shore of the cosmic ocean.

On this shore we've learned most of what we know. Recently we've waded a little way out, maybe ankle deep, and the water seems inviting. Some part of our being knows this is where we came from.

We long to return, and we can. Because the cosmos is also within us—we're made of star stuff. We are the way the cosmos comes to know itself."

  17. PURE GOLD ~ We feel rebellious when our emotions signal to us that there is some kind of breach of integrity. If we act on those emotions, beyond giving voice to them, the actions we take will be unsustainable. The changes we seek to make will not last because we failed to do the work underneath to heal the breach in integrity. This is why, in order to create lasting change on the planet, we must first heal our self-worth and anything that is keeping us from being in integrity. If we do not, the energetic platform for sustaining the change won't last. If you try to make a change without healing your self-worth, you will repeat the pattern in a different situation over and over again until you finally get that you are a unique, vital and irreplaceable part of the Cosmic Plan. If you do not own that you are deeply and wildly connected to your preciousness, any change you make will be temporary.

  18. Steam and GOG both have this 1992 point-and-click adventure game from MicroProse on sale for around $1. I never played it, and I am legitimately curious how a game from 1992 with this title and these themes lands in 2026

  24. Let the New Moon help you name the relationship terms you genuinely want to live by. Notice where desire, pride, fear, and trust are asking for different things, then give those needs clear language. Ask before assuming a gesture will be welcomed and leave room for an answer that complicates your plans. Honestly offer warmth without bargaining for a particular response. A new beginning gains substance through the agreements you can honour long after the mood has changed. On a cosmic scale, this weekend closes a nine-year karmic chapter and begins the part of your story where everything you learned starts returning as reciprocation, peace, abundance and effortless wish fulfilment. After lesson after lesson, challenge after challenge and years of emotional evolution, this highly charged weekend marks the completion of a spiritual curriculum your soul spent years mastering. A goal connected with that time could now return so clearly that you finally understand why it survived shifting circumstances and several versions of yourself. The Libra New Moon places reciprocation and receiving at the centre of this destined beginning. You’ve got this!
