  1. I defend the planet from asteroid collisions

in Nature's "WHERE I WORK" series: Astronomer Desireé Cotto-Figueora detects and characterizes near-Earth asteroids to identify potential hazards.

  2. The Earth is getting an extra mini moon for a few weeks… how many times has this happened in the past? The article already points out that this is relatively frequent, as it has happened a number of times since we’ve been tracking near earth objects.

  3. Fortunately, the skies were clear enough that the asteroid #2024RW1 née #CAQTDL2’s meteor-fireball-bolide phase was visible and with plenty of videos taken.

As already mentioned by many outlets, this was only the 9th time a meteor was predicted in advance which meant that lots of people were expecting it.

  4. Various astronomers are reporting that a 1-meter asteroid (#CAQTDL2) discovered by the #CatalinaSkySurvey this morning will become a meteor by striking the atmosphere at around 16:39 UTC (12:39am local time) over northern #Luzon island in the #Philippines 🇵🇭.

No damage is expected but if there are clear skies tonight (Typhoon #Yagi / #EntengPH is in the area) people can expect to see an impressive fireball. 🌠

  5. Skyscraper-sized #asteroid to pass within 1.7m miles of #Earth on Friday

#Nasa says it will be a harmless flyby by the giant rock, one of several #NearEarthObjects slated to swing by the planet this week

  6. Newly spotted 50-meter #asteroid tops #Risk List

"... #scientists say that a 49-meter-wide asteroid discovered last week is currently calculated to have a 1-in-625 chance of hitting our #planet in a couple of decades from now.

The rock, called #2023DW, now sits atop the #EuropeanSpaceAgency’s Risk List as the only one with a '1' rating on the #TorinoScale, which is used for categorizing the impact hazard of #NearEarthObjects."
