First #EV charging experience at an #IONNA station yesterday, and it was *vastly* superior to others I’ve tried (#EVgo, #ElectrifyAmerica).
First, no account and no app required. Tap to pay just worked, which, I know, seems obvious, but EV owners recognize that as a minor miracle. It was as simple as fueling at a gas station — simpler, actually, as I didn’t even have to enter my ZIP Code, and the machine didn’t beep at me once!
Second, charging started immediately and was super fast. Superior to the others.
Third, it was cheap! 39 cents/kWh. Other fast chargers in my area are ~60 cents/kWh. Some also have 99-cent “session fees.” (I recognize pricing can change; I assume they are starting off low to encourage new customers like me, and will increase later. 🤷♂️)
Fourth, the interface and brand elements were great. Everything worked together. What a concept! There are even optional charts with charging curves for the full nerdy level of detail. 🤓

It’s cool that the #ArtemisII astronauts brought along an iPhone as camera, I guess, but iPhones by default do a LOT of post-processing to “enhance” your pictures. Often great for snaps of the kids, but maybe not great for the scientific and historical record.
Any #space #journos report on the nerdy specifics of how photo equipment was used, and what post-processing was done?
Bonus question: Was “airplane mode” enough? Or did they have to develop a custom “spacecraft mode”???

Biking on Evans is now vastly better than before the project, but the traffic numbers show how much work is left to be done: cars still outnumber bikes on Evans 100 to 1 (!), probably because nearby connecting streets like Cesar Chavez, Phelps, and 3rd Street are still so unsafe, discouraging biking in the area. #bikeSF

Caste discrimination may be invisible to those of us who are not South Asian, but seems to be a real problem:
"In a 2022 research paper, 24 of 27 Dalit Nepalis interviewed in the Bay Area said they had experienced some form of caste-based discrimination, including two who said they were forced out by roommates or landlords when their caste was discovered."

Dyed some fabric today. It came out a lot lighter than I intended, but it is what it is. It's still nice. The fabric is cotton flannel and jersey. I'll make the jersey into underpants primarily, and the flannel is for the lining of a jacket, though there's enough of both that there will be left over for other projects.

In college I used to live in Cedar Riverside, Minneapolis. Beautiful neighborhood, amazing people, great local businesses. But sadly isolated by two freeways, I-35W and I-94. Coming from DC, which largely resisted urban freeways, I found it a shame how much they disconnected the city.

Love to see it becoming a mainstream position in SF to support tearing down the rest of the Central Freeway that divides Western SoMa from the Mission
Better yet, this letter to Caltrans asks questions that imply removing 280 between 101 and 6th St could be on the table as well. Would be huge for reconnecting Dogpatch and Bayview. Gotta hand it to Senator Wiener on this one.

Oak Street news: if approved, protected bike lane along Panhandle would finally be implemented when Oak’s repaved next year!
NOPNA supports it. Opposition from HANC and Urban School delayed it, but Urban School now standing down. Converts 23 parking spots, plus 26 within 20’ of crosswalks are being converted to daylighting.

About 95% of pregnancies that are affected do not result in a live birth. Major causes of death include hypoxia and heart abnormalities. It is impossible to predict an exact prognosis during pregnancy or the neonatal period. Half of the live infants do not survive beyond the first week of life. The median lifespan is five to 15 days... Though rare, some persons with Trisomy 18 do survive into their twenties and thirties.
