    Diversos estudios han demostrado que la publicidad vinculada al deporte influye en el reconocimiento de marca, las preferencias, la intención de compra y el consumo de niños y adolescentes.

    Dentro del marco de la campaña Copa-Cola, el Poder del Consumidor, en colaboración con el O´Neill Institute de la Universidad de Georgetown, presentaron en conferencia internacional, el documento “La ciencia del sportwashing: cómo el marketing en el deporte afecta la salud de niñas, niños y adolescentes en la Copa Mundial”, realizado por investigadoras de la Universidad de Nueva York (NYU), sobre el patrocinio de Coca-Cola en la Copa Mundial de la FIFA 2026, así como los resultados preliminares de una encuesta aplicada a estudiantes en México sobre la percepción de este tipo de estrategias de marketing.

    La encuesta encontró que los adolescentes mexicanos de entre 14 y 17 años que vieron anuncios de refrescos regulares de una marca genérica, combinados con el logotipo de la FIFA, utilizaron una proporción significativamente mayor de palabras asociadas con la salud en comparación con quienes vieron anuncios de una marca genérica sin el logotipo. Además, reportaron sentirse significativamente más cercanos emocionalmente a una marca reconocida, como Coca-Cola, frente a una marca genérica de refrescos.

    La Copa del Mundo es uno de los mayores eventos mediáticos del planeta. De acuerdo con los datos de la propia Federación Internacional de Fútbol Asociación (FIFA), durante el mundial de Qatar en 2022 se estimó que alrededor de 2.2 millones de personas vieron, al menos, 20 minutos o más de este evento, mientras que el partido final de la copa tuvo más de 1,500 millones de espectadores.

    Sin embargo, el verdadero negocio del mundial son los patrocinios. En 2024, la FIFA informó que el 63% de sus ingresos fueron por derechos de marketing, lo que subraya la importancia central de la publicidad y el patrocinio para su modelo de negocios.iii Dentro de este tipo de patrocinios se encuentra uno muy cuestionable: el de las bebidas azucaradas. Aunque no se tienen datos certeros, documentos de medios de comunicación y prensa especializada han estimado que el valor de los contratos entre FIFA y Coca-Cola es de alrededor de 400 millones de dólares.

    Esta relación simbiótica resulta muy problemática. Mientras que la FIFA, y particularmente la Copa Mundial, representan uno de los eventos deportivos más vistos por el mundo, uno de sus principales patrocinadores es una empresa cuyo producto es completamente opuesto al deporte. Se trata de un patrocinio del producto con mayor impacto en la salud de la población nacional. En México, uno de cada

    tres casos nuevos de diabetes se debe al consumo de este tipo de bebidas; en el caso de enfermedades cardiovasculares, representa uno de cada siete. En cifras concretas, se estima que el consumo de bebidas bebidas azucaradas se relaciona con 169,425 casos nuevos de diabetes al año y con 60,850 de enfermedades cardiovasculares. En México, uno de cada seis adulto sufre diabetes, y esta enfermedad, junto con las cardiovasculares, es la principal causa de muerte.–sn–
