  1. Tonight, I watched a big-name writer bully another writer with a smaller presence. Basically, threaten to sue said writer.
I’m done with #Substack Notes. Watching this happen was the last straw for me. If this is how the “best” of Substack behaves, I want out.
I do not want to be somewhere where I’ll be subject to this toxicity or see others being subjected to it.
So, I will no longer be using Notes.
Am actually relieved cos I can now focus on what matters.

  3. I wanted to quote so much of this article that it would have ended up being a Borges-like 1:1 map of the territory. Instead, I’ll simply share the part of Swarnali Mukherjee’s writing which resonated most with me.
Do go and read the whole thing.
(I discovered this via Substack Notes, in which I have no financial interest, but simply finding […]

  4. I have more fun on #Mastodon than #Substack Notes. Why is that? 🤔 It's probably personal - I just feel a lot of pressure on #SubstackNotes, an air of competitiveness and lots of "look at me" posts.
Over here on Mastodon I have so carefully cultivated my feed and friends that I am only exposed to people who are laid back and just love to share their passion on various topics. I don't feel as pressured here. Hmm.

  6. I have over 80 #Substack subscriptions. I realise that I can't keep up. :( Am going to narrow down the list to those that I'll want to build a relationship with & who talk back ;P
#SubstackNotes is interesting but it is a LOT OF WORK to get noticed!
I need to be realistic and remind myself that I can't do it all,. Also a frustration - currently the ecosystem lacks diversity.Reading about US issues all the time was wearing me down.

  8. Just unbelievable. I genuinely thought this was a joke at first...then it just kept going, and there are articles confirming? How hard is it to #JustSayNo to #Racists?

  10. So is #threads like #substacknotes, in that everyone will use it for a few days, then forget about it entirely?

  11. CW: Racist troll on Substack

Probably the weirdest comment I got on the relatively tame and slow #SubstackNotes so far.
FYI minorities can be racists too.
Also, obviously he/she does not understand #malaysians
Dear idiot, I speak 4 languages. I switch comfortably between all, but write mostly in English. Also, Malaysians are not called "Malays". There are Chinese Malaysians, Malay Malaysians etc.
Oh the stupidity of some people. *Rolls eyes*

  15. When the question of “what will be the next #Twitter” is posed, ir argue that it’ll probably be either the #Fediverse or #Bluesky, as they both have been under development for a long time and therefore have an advantage when it comes to infrastructural maturity. These centralized upstarts like #SubstackNotes will soon fade away.

Can you think of a social network that exploded instantly without first building around small communities and then growing and approving as the audience grew? That’s not how #FaceBook grew, not is it how #Twitter grew.

  17. So on #SubstackNotes, people are complaining aboutfake accounts signing up as subscribers of their newsletters. One writer had nearly 100 fake crypto spammers in her subscriber list suddenly.

I do wonder how #Substack is going to manage this. Unlike #Mastodon where admins & mods can just deal with the flood, what options do Substackers have?

  19. #SubstackNotes is only an oasis of calm if I look at my My Subscribers/Subscribed feed. The Home feed is a hot mess.

On one thread I saw someone mocking a poster because he shared that the no.1 cause of death among kids in the US is gun violence. There was a full-on brawl between the two that went on for a few threads.

If you mock people who care about kids dying from gun violence I think there's something seriously wrong with you.

I wonder how content moderation will be done on #substack

  21. the fact that the #BlueSky ceo seems to be doing the same thing, and #SubstackNotes too is just ridiculous and this fake-ass libertarian reasoning pisses me off

  22. I know Substack has the potential for serious moderation problems with Notes, but damn it is nice over there right now.

REPORT: In 2016, President Trump had no agenda. Now he wants the job back and is determined to do stuff, bad stuff. Real bad stuff.

  24. Is #Substack a Nazi bar ... or simply misunderstood?

In this article I discuss the interview that started it all, social media's response to it, why top down moderation is not the solution and why #SubstackNotes is not a Twitter killer.

PS: Please be civil and courteous in the comments. I know it’s a controversial topic for some, but let’s learn to listen to each other :)

  25. I feel that it’s important to write it because there’s pressure to keep silent on certain topics for fear of being harassed.

If I wanted a much easier life for myself and popularity, I should remain silent.

But as a former journalist, I suppose you can say it’s in my blood to do this.

Of course it’s about #SubstackNotes, content moderation and … the American culture war.

  26. "No no no I'm not trying Substack notes, I've done Mastodon, Post, Hive and even reopened Tumblr. Everyone just pick one!"

    substack.com/profile/17306545-

This is why we need to replace Titter (and the rest of the DataFarm dinosaurs) with a *protocol*, not an app. Don't know about Post or Hive, but if Tumblr implements ActivityPub as their owner said they will, we won't have to pick the same one, we can follow Tumblr friends from Mastodon and vice-versa.

  27. I've been listening to #NilayPatel's interview with #ChrisBest about #Substack and #SubstackNotes.

I feel like the #moderation discussion starting at about 42 minutes (listen to Nilay's introductory comments for context) makes a really good argument NOT to use a centralised social service.

I added a trimmed audio clip to this post.

People who may switch to #SubstackNotes from #Twitter (hypothetically), are just exchanging one nightmare for another potential problem space.

At least with a federated network, you can make your own choices and not have to suffer through someone else's moderation choices.

  28. Ah!

A substack model that is not the known transphobic and racist trashfire substack.

That is an impressive list of endorsements for customer service.
