First #EV charging experience at an #IONNA station yesterday, and it was *vastly* superior to others I’ve tried (#EVgo, #ElectrifyAmerica).
First, no account and no app required. Tap to pay just worked, which, I know, seems obvious, but EV owners recognize that as a minor miracle. It was as simple as fueling at a gas station — simpler, actually, as I didn’t even have to enter my ZIP Code, and the machine didn’t beep at me once!
Second, charging started immediately and was super fast. Superior to the others.
Third, it was cheap! 39 cents/kWh. Other fast chargers in my area are ~60 cents/kWh. Some also have 99-cent “session fees.” (I recognize pricing can change; I assume they are starting off low to encourage new customers like me, and will increase later. 🤷♂️)
Fourth, the interface and brand elements were great. Everything worked together. What a concept! There are even optional charts with charging curves for the full nerdy level of detail. 🤓
I wish IONNA success! More across #California please!

Is there a timeline when #tesla gets its act together and adds the longer charging cables to their superchargers? I wanted to try out the #nacs adapter I got, but yea, no. Cables still too short to accommodate charging port on the opposite side. Also, the parking lanes are incredibly narrow. Exact opposite of #evgo and #electrifyanerica charging spots I’ve been to. I guess I will avoid em for now unless I *really* need to charge away from home. Blocking two lanes wouldn’t be appreciated lol

"The industry is evolving fast, and its many stakeholders are coming together to solve issues. Charging operator #EVgo said its “one and done” charger success rate had risen to 95% in its presentation of third quarter results."

This was an interesting trip back in time using these old 125 amp, 50 kW #ABB units at the old #EVGo station. I charged to 79% because nobody else was around but I stopped my session when another #EV came and they needed a #charge. My wife needed to run some errands in this area or I would have used a more modern EVGo station. But the time wasn't wasted. I enjoyed doing some #urbanarchaeology at the #deadmall I imagine that's how people feel when they see the ruins of Skara Brae for the 1st time

The #chargers at the #EVGo station I just #charged at are really, really old. Apparently, these were once #ElectrifyAmerica chargers before they sold the station to EVGo. You can still see the residue from the EA labeling.

Autocharge+ worked flawlessly once again with #EVGo. Autocharge+ is sort of like #Tesla 's Plug & #Charge but it uses the vehicle's MAC address to identify the #electricvehicle and bill you. All you have to do is plug in the vehicle at the #charger

My home smart #EV #charger defaulted last night and didn't charge and my wife needed to run errands, so I #charged on an ancient 50 kW #EVGo charger at what I think is the mall from "Dawn of the Dead." It is spooky here. #urbanarchaeology #deadmalls

#EVgo closes a $1.25B federal #loan to build 7,500 #EV DC fast chargers
With the #DOE loan’s backing, this buildout will bring EVgo’s total owned and operated network to at least 10,000 fast-charging stalls, allowing the company to more than triple its network footprint by 2029. It currently has more than 1,000 fast charging stations across 40 states. The loan requires the deployment period to be five years, starting in 2025.

Total rubbish, this post and your "magazine"!
The future is not EV's for everyone. The future is degrowth with cycle and pedestrian movement within communities, free green public transport around larger communities and cities and rail between them. At best EV taxis may could play a part.

I have a Level 2 charger my #ID4Pro #EV at home. I also have a #ChargePoint #EVGo & an #ElectrifyAmerica account.
However, I believe in #BeingPreprared. So, I bought a #J1772 to #NACS #Tesla adapter but I'd only use a Tesla #Supercharger (or destination charger) as a last resort (because I have issues with #Musk ) & haven't even downloaded the Tesla charging app yet, so I can't even use a Tesla charger yet but . . .
Here's an interesting article to those who are interested in #EVs published by #ConsumerReports about their experience charging certain non-Tesla EVs at #Tesla #Superchargers with a J1772 to NACS (Tesla) adapter or with Tesla's #MagicDock . . .

This is really weird - this EVgo charging station is
- fully occupied (all CCS ports) according to EVgo app
- 2 CCS ports available according to PlugShare app……Who should I trust??? It’s hard to believe it’s all in use in the middle of night in a very rural / suburban town.

I closed out November with a flurry of published stories, some filed weeks ago. I like finishing strong in November, since that’s the last month that freelancers can reasonably expect to write something and get paid for it that year.
One of the posts published in the closing hours of last month but not listed below was an extra for Patreon readers: a Web Summit recap covering things that didn’t show up in stories for my other clients.
11/27/2023: What part of ‘get rid of my data’ don’t companies get?, Fast Company
I pitched this piece months ago, then took far more time than I expected to report it out and finally write the damn thing.
11/28/2023: The 3 best international tech innovations of 2023, Fast Company
I helped judge this competition for the second year in a row.
11/28/2023: The 4 next big things in robotics and automation for 2023, Fast Company
My second batch of “NBTT” value judgments covered this high-tech sector.
11/28/2023: The 5 next big things in space and telecom for 2023, Fast Company
Of course I was going to accept a story assignment from my editor that would let write about space.
11/28/2023: Researchers: Maybe the Internet Isn’t Making Us Miserable After All, PCMag
I wrote up a study questioning the widely-held belief that social media and the Internet in general are making everybody stressed, lonely and resentful.
11/29/2023: The Best Cell Phone Plans, Wirecutter
This minor update covered new high-end plans at T-Mobile and Verizon and updated readers about AT&T and Verizon’s C-band deployment, among other things.
11/30/2023: OpenAI At A Crossroads: Can AI Threaten Humanity?, Al Jazeera
I joined AJ’s The Take podcast, hosted by Malika Bilal, to disucss OpenAI’s recent calamities and the prospects for AI to live up to the hopes (or fears) of some of its bigger supporters.
11/30/2023: Ex-EVgo CEO: It Can Take 6 to 18 Months to Put a Charging Station Into Service, PCMag
Recently-retired EVgo CEO Cathy Zoi taught me a few things about the state of the EV-charging business in the panel hosted by Resources for the Future in D.C. that I watched from home via Zoom.
11/30/2023: Google Celebrates RCS Hitting the Billion-User Mark With Multiple Feature Drops, PCMag
I got advance copies of Google’s blog posts about RCS topping a billion users and the software feature drops the company staged to celebrate the occasion, then made sure to remind readers of Google’s most recent announcement of the total number of Android devices–more than 3 billion, announced in 2022, which suggests that most Android users have yet to benefit from this upgrade to SMS and MMS.
12/1/2023: Facebook Whistleblower: Want to Help Kids? Keep Them Off Social Media, PCMag
I bikeshared into D.C. to watch a different tech-policy panel, this one at the Brookings Institution and featuring Melanie Dawes, chief executive of the U.K. telecom regulator Ofcom, and Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen.
Updated 12/11/2023 to add the Wirecutter guide that I had missed before.
