I am so saddened by the closing of #hampshirecollege . Being apart of the five college consortium (Mount Holyoke for me) and my experience taking classes there were beyond formative to who I am as a person. I wish every university could approach education for students the way that Hampshire tried to do. Instead of like cogs in a machine. God bless everyone trying to keep the humanities, critical (social) sciencea and liberal arts at large alive.

@shauna Another #HampshireCollege alum here, from long enough ago to be retired now. So sorry that people choosing colleges today won't have the option.

“I think the reality is that #tuition dependent #schools are being buffeted at many levels around a whole bunch of different headwinds,” Hampshire’s president, Jennifer Chrisler, said in an interview.

Many small #schools have struggled to enroll students in places facing population declines, a factor in Hampshire’s demise. #HampshireCollege has about 625 students, Chrisler said, about half the school’s enrollment in the early 2000s.

Really sad to learn that Hampshire College will be shutting down. It was my first choice in colleges, way back in the 90’s, but I couldn’t make the finances work. I would have loved to go there. One of my classmates at #hampshirecollege was Eugene Mirman. We hung out a bunch our first year. We had a crush on the same girl.

His final project was a standup act, 45 minutes or an hour or something. Like an HBO special.

That’s what the school was for: helping you figure out how to do the things you’re driven to do, giving you context within the larger society and between social enclaves.

#hampshirecollege ‘s primary pedagogical impulse was to prioritize learning over teaching.

That doesn’t sit well with educational-industrial systems.

It was supposed to be pedagogical R&D, the cutting edge of how young adults learn to become wise and effective stewards of the world.

It was to be supported by Amherst, Mt. Holyoke, Smith, and UMass’s budgets, so they could take what Hampshire learned and develop their programs with those lessons.

#hampshirecollege was where I studied cognitive science, art, and education as part of a single magnum opus.

I got to make art about ALife. I got to learn about Jean Piaget and how humans learn through play.

I got to play roleplaying games with Rod Roddenberry.

I got to stay up for days on end working on software just to see what software could do.

The world will lose something deeply special when #hampshirecollege closes at the end of this year.

Without it, I’d have never found my way.

I taught there, too, founding its game design program curriculum, helping my fellow weirdos find their ways.

You probably know about Lupita Nyong’o, Liev Schreiber, maybe Ken Burns or Lee Smolin.

As a student, I worked on computer interfaces that Apple & Samsung/LG integrated into the interface you’re using now. I had to testify about it, actually.

I was saddened to read today of the closure of Hampshire College.

Not only should we regret the lives of students, faculty, and staff being thrown into turmoil, but we should also lament the loss of an institute of learning, a loss that diminishes us all.

I used a computer like this to write my thesis at #HampshireCollege in 1982 on the performance of an experimental ##PassiveSolar home I helped build.
Started it by manually entering a 3 byte JMP instruction to an address in the ROM resetting the address bus switches to 0 and depressing the GO switch.
The OS in ROM was probably CPM. It enabled me to use emacs to write/edit and save onto 8” floppies.
