That's a really big, multi-faceted problem. It'd take more than a few social media posts to go over it all, but I can share the solutions I'm working on. It's mostly a two-prong approach.

First of all, give as many people as we can the tools they need to cut through the misinformation, deception, and manipulation, as well as how to better organize and tackle large, systemic problems. We're going to need as many people as possible working together on this, not fighting each other, so we have to do this right. So I've been assembling a 'tool kit' to do this. I call it Techne, and it covers topics from communication skills, community organizing, critical thinking, social and systemic change strategies, and more. It's free, open, and designed to improve with participation, leveraging network effects kind of like Wikipedia. Given enough time, I believe that these tools alone would eventually lead to the kind of change that would benefit all humanity. But as we can all see, we don't really have much time. Things are getting worse all the time, and have been for quite a while. We need to act now, because the longer we delay, the harder it will be to change things for the better.

So the second prong is a more direct solution, an end-goal if you will, that has already been figured out and that we can work towards. It's what I think is our best chance for a stable, just, and prosperous society for everyone. It's a big pill to swallow, and takes a little time to learn (not minutes, but not years either), but our problems lie deep in the roots and need to be changed there, otherwise the weeds will just keep cropping up. And we don't have time for incremental change either. But this solution will tackle all the big nasties, from billionaires, corporate greed, political corruption, environmental problems, poverty, crime, war, and systemic discrimination. It's as close to an all-in-one package as we can get.

With enough people behind it, we could have something like this up and running in just a couple of years. It'll be hard, yes, but anything slower or easier is just going to make things harder down the road. If we can pursue both these things as much as we each can, I think we have a shot. And because you tagged this with several neurodiversity tags, I'll also say that I believe that both of these ideas will be of particular interest to many of us, for many reasons, such as social justice, systems thinking, critical thinking, and science to name a few.

I agree that it is an education problem. I can't say how much it will actually help, only time will tell, but here's my effort to make people more knowledgeable about AI: https://techne-system.neocities.org/program/level-2/topic-8/l2t8-iib-tech

The real trick is getting people who think they already know all they need to about the subject to study it anyway, to fill in gaps and clear up misconceptions. Anyone who went through some of the previous topics in the program, such as Critical Thinking and Education, are far more likely to do that.

That's a refreshingly nuanced take on the whole issue. I mean I get it, why so many people are so mad about AI/LLMs, they are doing a great deal of harm. And if you're working with limited information, it's a better side to be on than the purely pro-AI side.

But it is a matter of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. The whole situation, while not incomprehensible, is a bit more complicated than just "AI bad/good". The problem isn't the people using it, it's the companies and governments that are proliferating it at a pace unprecedented in history. That's where the problem lies, and that's where change needs to happen.

And since they aren't going to change by themselves, it's up to the people to make them. But in order to do that, they need to direct their efforts to where the problem lies instead of against the users. I mean, that's one of the most common ways elites get away with these kinds of abuses, make the people fight each other rather than them. It's simple distraction.

So that's why what's needed here is education. People need to be informed about this technology, its capabilities, limitations, and the ethics in their use and proliferation. That's why I skipped ahead in the production schedule of my education project Techne to make this easy to learn lesson on the whole issue:

This way people have a better starting point from which to decide what they want to do than just "pro/anti", which only serves the elites. I believe you said something to this effect yourself.

But I also suppose that one of the reasons many people prefer attacking users than institutions is because they don't know how to so the latter. That is why Techne also includes lessons in Social Change Strategies and Systemic/Institutional Change. While these efforts aren't necessarily easy themselves, the lessons are relatively easy to learn and accessible. Because the only way this harm is going to stop is when we stop fighting each other and start fighting the ones truly responsible, together. Only through our collective action can be bring about real change. It's been done before, there are proven methods. We can learn how and become part of the solution.

Edit: Given your background I would be interested in your thoughts on the lesson should you have the time and interest. I also welcome feedback from anyone trying to learn from it.

I think that it's just like working with other people in this regard. When someone you work with consistently produces reliable work, then yes, you can trust them more and not have to check their work as much *in general*. But for anything where mistakes are costly, you check anyway, because people make mistakes. Take engineering for example, you always check each other's work. To do anything else is to invite problems, possibly disaster depending on the project. Science includes procedures for reproducability and peer review, because you need to check each other's work. Even the old carpentry adage of "measure twice, cut once" is a simplified version of this general principle.

This is how objectivity works, and you need to scale how careful you are with how important or dangerous your project or task is. It's basic risk management.

That said, I know that most people are not trained to do this (which I'm trying to rectify with #Techne ), and the availability and convenience of LLMs is causing a real tension with that. This is deeply aggravated by how hard companies and governments are pushing the technology. So given that, what you are describing is definitely happening. My point is just that it's not an inevitable consequence, just something that is all too prevalent given current circumstances.

Perfectly understandable. There is a lot of terrible things happening in the world, and having any form of justice sensitivity can make any exposure to it downright maddening. I know.

If you're interested in how I reconcile preferring to be kind and positive with this, the upshot is that for me it comes from understanding the complexities of the situation. Not the details necessarily, I easily get overwhelmed from those. But instead the patterns and underlying systems that have led to our current situation, continue to fuel it, but yet understanding them suggests pathways to help deal with them. I've found that with this information, I am far more charitable regarding people's involvement in these patterns, as well as hopeful about the ways out of them.

If you (by which I mean anyone reading this) is interested in learning these things, you can take a look at them at the following web address. There's a lot there, so if you don't have the time and energy for it all, that is why I have the 'quick' version which is called the Bare Essentials level, bite-sized lessons in the various topics. Perfectly understandable. There is a lot of terrible things happening in the world, and having any form of justice sensitivity can make any exposure to it downright maddening. I know.

If you're interested in how I reconcile preferring to be kind and positive with this, the upshot is that for me it comes from understanding the complexities of the situation. Not the details necessarily, I easily get overwhelmed from those. But instead the patterns and underlying systems that have led to our current situation, continue to fuel it, but yet understanding them suggests pathways to help deal with them. I've found that with this information, I am far more charitable regarding people's involvement in these patterns, as well as hopeful about the ways out of them.

Like I did with the Science topic, I've stepped out of the normal development progression to work on the Intermediate level material for the Level 2 topic of Technology and Society. The main reason for this is because of the subject of artificial intelligence and large language models.

This technology has been deployed faster than any in history, much faster than people have had time to really learn much about it. Despite that, it has also been made highly available to a huge number of people, making an alarming gap between a technology's use and people's understanding of it. So for that reason, I added this little primer of the subject for anyone interested in what AI/LLMs are, how they work, what they can and can't do, the ethical considerations of their use and deployment, as well as how to use them effectively should you decide to. I also hope that it will provide a better basis for people discussing the topic, as well as those who want to get involved with public policy decisions regarding it.

Also included in Technology and Society Intermediate are the subjects of automation, open source (both software and other things), as well as a more general but important look at humanity's relationship and dependence on technology.

As usual, any (friendly) feedback is welcome, it's how the program improves.

I think that no one should touch AI/LLMs without some kind of training or education on how they work, what they can and can't do, considering the ethics of their use, and using them responsibly if you do decide to use them. That's why I'm making such a primer right now as part of the Techne System for Foundational Skills in the Technology and Society topic. Here are some relevant excerpts from the draft so far:

First of all is mostly behind the scenes, but I have started using a program called Hugo (https://gohugo.io) for making the website, which will speed up my workflow. Not only that, but Hugo comes with themes that offer many features, including layouts that I can only dream of, built-in search function, menus, charts by code, etc. I'm really excited about it, and the whole site has a fresh new look as well. There is also some new content as we progress towards version 0.4. Level 1, Topic 1: How to Use This Program now has an Intermediate level lesson, giving more advice on using Techne, making it easier, and making options clearer.

Science (Level 2, Topic 5) also got the Intermediate treatment (a bit out of sequence, but I was inspired), with not only more to learn about science itself, but full lessons on Chaos Theory, Evolution, and Ecology. So why these subjects then? They do all relate to many of the other topics in the program, and having a basic understanding of them does have benefits for your life too. If you want any more convincing, just check out the Why These Topics in the first lesson's introduction, or Why This Matters in each subject, just like with every topic in the program.

Imagine if your language had a word that meant both "food" and "junk food", or at least that's how it was used in common parlance. Then people started pushing back against critiques of (junk) food, saying, "well we've always had food." This is exactly like the people (and i've seen this a lot lately) online pontificating about technology and how it's so great and important to humanity and we've always had it and in fact it predates humans. This is like saying otters busted open shells with rocks 5 million years ago so you should let your children eat nothing but takis all day long.

So. Stupid. I contend that to make an argument that collapses a term so much, conflates it with more general concepts in order to purposely confuse the issue, is gaslighting and basically makes the term meaningless, cuts off in advance any real conversation that's actually going on. fuck you people. You all know that all the modern complaints about tech are talking about _modern tech_. Do a little pattern match in your head and stick "modern" in before every use of the word "technology" and then come back and discuss in good faith.
