  6. We had another new visitor in the garden early this morning! I've seen these when I volunteered at Wild Bird Fund in NYC but never in the wild. I just learned that they sometimes venture into gardens when it is very cold and the ground is too frozen for them to dig for bugs. They figured out that garden soil is often a little softer. So amazing 🤩

  7. The #woodcock is an independent creature with complex behavior and a demanding habitat. It serves as an indicator of how serious we are about near-natural, moist forests and whether we are prepared to adapt our actions to scientific findings and minimum ethical standards. A hunting practice that kills millions of these birds annually, despite experts urging greater restraint, is simply incompatible with modern environmental and #animalwelfare ethics.

  9. American Woodcock Shine, or Rock'n'Peent

    youtube.com/watch?v=bY436JiiCj

video description: a brown mottled bird at first facing away from the camera making a "peent" noise when there's a break in the music, rotating a bit, scratching the base of its long beak, repeat, until at the last "peent" it's facing the camera. Video fades to grayscale when lyrics start.

  10. Typisch Künstler! Monty hat einen sehr diversen Freundeskreis: Diese Waldschnepfe saß heute vor Monty's Atelier und versuchte durch seine Katzenklappe zu kommen, was aber glücklicherweise nicht geklappt hat.

  11. Wonderful evening at Meadowbrook Park in Champaign, Illinois. At least a dozen American #woodcock were calling ("peent!") and displaying - very hard to see even when overhead.

And two great horned #owls flew into a nearby tree and hooted for a while - one photographed here.

  12. Still one of the best #bird sightings I have ever had. A #woodcock and 3 #baby #chicks. Had to shuffle them out of the road #Birds

  13. Direct evidence of 'itinerant breeding' in East Coast #shorebird species phys.org/news/2024-04-team-evi paper: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi

"Migration and reproduction are two of the most demanding events in a #bird's annual cycle, so much so that the vast majority of them separate the two tasks into different times of the year. But a study... has found direct evidence of a species, the American #woodcock, that overlaps periods of migration and reproduction, a rare breeding strategy"

  14. Well. We tried to go to a #Woodcock program but cranky baby and bad weather got in the day. That’s OK. I heard some Meep, meep, meeps. So that was fun.

  15. Aerodactylus scolopaciceps (named after the #Pokémon #Aerodactyl) is usually known as #Pterodactylus, as they are almost indistinguishable. But there are some subtleties in the ratios of #bone measurements that separate the two into different genera (Vidovic and Martill 2014).

Fun Fact: The specific name, scolopaciceps, refers to the snout looking superficially like the Eurasian #Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola).

  16. @loren *peent*

sorry for the poor quality low light video, but oh you don’t know how excited I was when I heard this! and spotted the woodcock!! This bird flew by me. First time I *saw* an American #woodcock #preent!!!

  17. This month I made a simple upbeat #chiptune bluesy track.

    It was:

    - made with RADtracker (#OPL3 / #YMF262), as practice; I'm planning to make more OPL stuff
    - a remake of one of my first chiptunes, which was done in literally half an hour. This one took a bit longer
    - made as penance for not knowing about woodcocks until like, just now. How am I a grown-ass adult and didn't know about this

  18. The woodcock is called ‘sitar’ in Romanian, which translates as ‘colander maker’, because of all the holes it produces while searching for worms. In reality it is employed in offices around the country as a hole punch.

  19. An American woodcock (timberdoodle) in Bryant Park from Monday. Timberdoodles (along with red-winged blackbirds, kinglets, and common grackles) are some of the earliest birds in the spring migration here in NYC.

  20. #Woodcock has the brightest #feathers ever measured birdguides.com/articles/woodco

How #woodcocks produce the most brilliant white #plumage patches among the #birds biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

The reverse surface of the white #EurasianWoodcock fail feather tips reflected around 55% of light, as measured using #spectrophotometry. This is around five times brighter than #SnowyOwl and 10 times brighter than the feathers of #ArcticRedpoll, both known for their startling white plumage.
