  1. It is exciting to see snippets of Surviving Earth coming out from Impossible Pictures (see: instagram.com/picturesimpossib). One of the clips released features Arctodus, the "short faced bear", here is my official design sheet, which was used by the production team.

Here is my lekking male acrocanthosaurs illustration (2023) from the Courtship and Mating chapter of DINOSAUR BEHAVIOUR, by Prof Michael Benton (published by @princetonupress). An amazing fossil site in Colorado, USA.

  5. My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

Here's a portrait of the Arctodus, commissioned in 2022 for a project I cannot talk about yet. Arctodus, also known as the short-faced bear, lived during the Pleistocene.

  6. My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

The 2022 Korean translation of Locked in Time (by Dr Dean Lomax & published by Columbia University Press) commissioned me to colourise my 50 greyscale illustrations. Here's "The lady looks on," showing male theropods lekking to impress a female.

Le biotope dépeint est celui de l'île de Hațeg, au crétacé supérieur. C'est aussi une référence au documentaire #PrehistoricPlanet

  8. My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

In 202 I supplied artwork to the BBC for the first series/season of Prehistoric Planet on Apple TV Plus. The most successful piece was this section of Mosasaurus skin (@tetzoo was consultant).

  9. “Frolicking Lingyuanopterus“ ✨

    #Lingyuanopterus camposi was a Chinese #istiodactylid #pterosaur from the early #Cretaceous!

The holotype has an almost complete skull and the atlas-axis complex (1st and 2nd neck vertebrae)!

  10. A new twist in an old origin story: Earliest #dinosaurs may have emerged in the Amazon phys.org/news/2025-01-story-ea paper: cell.com/current-biology/fullt #paleoart by @markwitton

"the earliest dinosaurs likely emerged in a hot equatorial region in what was then the supercontinent #Gondwana—an area of land that encompasses the Amazon, Congo, & Sahara today... the may have been well adapted to hot, arid environments... #sauropods seemed to retain their preference, keeping to lower latitudes"

  11. My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

In 2020 I illustrated LOCKED IN TIME, written by Dr Dean Lomax - Palaeontologist. Here's my greyscale painting of some lekking male acrocanthosaurs.

This book would make a great Christmas gift! cup.columbia.edu/book/locked-i

  12. I made a thing. My wife is a paleo-nerd, and this is getting some laughs in the group chat. That it rhymes with Kamala Harris is just icing on the cake... #anomalocaris #paleoart #DNC #oprah #memes

  13. My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

In 2013 I built 23 scale and life-size models for MUSE Science Museum, in Trento, Italy. Here's Anomalocaris, which you might have seen in books and online credited to someone else – but it's one of mine!

In 2011 a bunch of artists were commissioned to create some dinosaur stamp designs for the Royal Mail. It eventually came down to me Vs the great John Sibbick . . . and he won. Here's my "awesomebro" Baryonyx design.

  15. Keresdrakon vilsoni was a tapejaromorph that lived during the #Cretaceous in what’s now #Brazil! It had a wingspan of over 3 m (≈10 ft), and lived alongside the #tapejarid, #Caiuijara! The first half of its generic name refers to the #spiritual personification of violent death in #Greek #mythology. Less graphically, the other half simply translates to “#dragon”.

Leave a comment on what family you think #Keresdrakon belongs in!

  16. Istiodactylus latidens (ist-ee-oh-dakt-ill-us lat-id-enz) was an ornithocheiroid #pterosaur from the Isle of Wight during the early #Cretaceous. Its generic name translates to “sail finger”, and its specific name translates to “broad teeth”, in reference to its spearhead-like tooth shape.

  17. Aerodactylus scolopaciceps (named after the #Pokémon #Aerodactyl) is usually known as #Pterodactylus, as they are almost indistinguishable. But there are some subtleties in the ratios of #bone measurements that separate the two into different genera (Vidovic and Martill 2014).

Fun Fact: The specific name, scolopaciceps, refers to the snout looking superficially like the Eurasian #Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola).

  19. My art in 2023 (6/12)

June: Anomalocaris, Dragon of the Cambrian. The realisation that most Cambrian creatures were tiny gave me the idea of a whole bunch of them hiding from a 40 cm long Anomalocaris while in positions reminiscent of a D&D party facing off against a dragon.

    #Anomalocaris #Cambrian #Opabinia #Hallucigenia #paleoart #MyArt #MyArtIn2023

  20. Mighty #Anomalocaris stirs, spreading dust and terror throughout the #Cambrian sea. #Opabinia, #Hallucigenia, #Pikaia, #Canadia, #Burgessia, #Marella, and #Elrathia can only hope the rocks and ridges they cover behind will hide them.

Inspired by a display at the Naturkunde Museum Stuttgart that perfectly showed off the difference in size between Cambrian critters. At 40 cm, Anomalocaris was a leviathan.
