I went ahead and picked up the Timex Expedition Field Post Titanium Automatic, and I am happy as can be! It's my first mechanical wristwatch, and I think I picked a great one. It’s light, comfortable, feels like a tank, and seems to be keeping pretty accurate time for the 9 hours that I’ve had it. It has a Miyota 8215 movement with custom, shock absorbent mounting and a screw down crown for better water resistance. It’s almost the exact same size as the Casio AE-1000W I’ve used as my EDC, and only a little bit heavier.

These system uses 3 inch floppy disks, with a capacity of a whooping 160 KB per side. The “per side" part is important because unlike most floppy disk systems, the user had to remove the disk and flip it over, since the drive had only one head. So each side acted as an independent storage device. Took the entire day due to a lot of silly problems, but I can now transfer programs and files from the Timex FDD 3000 to the Mac (directly generating a TAP file) through the serial port! 😁 This will allow me to save some of the first programs I ever written, and some old Masterfiles databases my parents used.
The FDD 3000 serial ports waited 40 years to be finally used! Some floppy disks have errors but it's amazing many of them are still mostly readable. #zxspectrum #Timex #RetroComputing

The restoration of the Timex FDD 3000 is officially done! 😁
I might replace the power supply in the future by something that runs cooler, but I’m super happy with this!
I played countless hours on this thing when I was a kid and the first software I ever wrote is still mostly readable in many of these floppies. I never expected to see this thing working ever again, especially in full, perfect working order!

Уже лет семь-восемь наручные часы идут такого формата, как на фото — с кучей пустоты внутри корпуса, заполненной пластиком и/или резиной. Это даже те механизмы, у которых есть хронограф или же индикация времени суток (24-х часов), даты и дня недели. Просветите, кто знает, про этот странная тенденция.
Когда модели размером 31...33мм в диаметре упорно и настойчиво именуются женскими. А к мужским причисляются лишь с размером в 42..45мм (не считая выступающей «головки»). Это и среди кварцевых бездушных дешёвок — которые до $100 или чутка больше $100, и среди любителей люксовой механики.
Банальная мода почти всегда весьма скоротечна, а тут явно какой-то «тренд» вышедший уже за пределы отрезка в пять лет. Ситуация изрядно отличается от того, что царило на рынке 15 лет назад, когда не только кварцевые, но и люксовая механика и претензионная стремились быть как можно меньше (незаметнее на руке).
Совершенно непонятно зачем делать часы намеренно большими и толстыми — вместо 30 грамм имеющих массу в 85...90 грамм, а то и больше. При том, что такой дутый корпус не является каким-то особенным (дающим серьёзную защиту). Т.е. не является способным выдерживать погружения на глубину (дайвинг), и в целом, даже мало пригоден для плавания в бассейне. А ходить в сауну или принимать горячие ванны в таких часах тоже нет смысла — скукожатся (покоробятся) гидроизолирующие прокладки. Это далеко не те силиконовые прокладки, которые ставятся на резьбовые соединениях при подключении счётчика горячей воды в жилых помещениях.
Само собой, что и мужские и женские модели часов имеют одинаковый механизм внутри, но различаются они не только диаметром, но и толщиной корпуса. При этом уровень «защиты» абсолютно одинаковый, но мужские будут с браслетом под 150-200 грамм весить, а т.н. современные «женские» оказываются и ощутимо тоньше и раза в два легче.
Тенденция интересная и глупая, сама по себе, и это явно не мимикрия под дорогие и именитые претензионные или люксовые механические часы. У людей в массе своей накуплено много люксовой или претензионной «механики» за тысячи USD, которые теперь по всем канонам продавцов выглядят чисто женскими? :)
Особенно, касается ряда моделей, которые десятки тысяч USD стоили и год от года лишь дорожают, которые нельзя купить простой зайдя с улицы, а придётся ждать несколько месяцев в очереди. Что всегда ценились не только особенностями механизма, но и своими малыми размерами (тем как сидят на руки и насколько незаметны).

I’ve been working on recovering this for months! With the absolutely vital help and patience of @luisfcorreia, here’s something I thought I would not see ever again. A Timex FDD 3000 (developed and built in Portugal!) loading a game to my old speccy! This is ~40 years old hardware just working (after a bit of maintenance). Aside from recapping, the only chip that had to be replaced was the Speccy Z80 that developed a bad M1 line. #zxspectrum #timex #retrocomputing #sinclair

All right, both PAL mysteriously marked 16 + helper flip-flop passed without issues (after a lot of issues getting the software right)!
Now I need to test the PALs that pair with these, marked with a mysterious 40. At least those are in sockets, so they're much easier to test, no flip-fop logic involved.

I've been spending a bit of time with my #Timex/#Sinclair HW, specifically trying to bring my Timex FDD 3000 back to life. This is a dual floppy drive that can be used as an autonomous CP/M computer (connects directly to a monitor), or as a floppy drive (technically, a file server) to the ZX Spectrum, allowing it to load and save games and programs directly from/to floppy disks. Naturally I forgot to take a photo before opening, but here’s what it looks like (photo from Load ZX Museum):

I got sick of winding my 45-year-old Timex a month ago, so I let it sit. The reserve is less than a day, so I had to wind it on waking and before going to bed.
There's no way to adjust the date other than advancing it though a full day, and with this knob it's uncomfortable doing that. So I waited for November 2nd and wound it up again. As luck would have it, it was only a minute off. (Or twelve hours and one minute - we'll see.)
