  1. Springtime is knocking at the door, so we did some very early spring-cleaning 🧹

RC-BOX BBS, the world's first (and currently only) Bulletin Board System to run on real RC2014 hardware (Z80 based Homebrew Kit) utilizing oldie-but-goldie CP/M 2.2 has seen a minor update:

    - new "read latest bulletin" prompt after login, skip the bulletin if you don't want to read it / already read it

    - fixed total line count at message output

    - raised max lines per message from 48 to 64 (at 64 columns per message line)

    - added some essential software to the file base (for those brave enough to try x/ymodem downloads).

Visit us using your favourite terminal program. Heck, we have no ANSI so even a teletype will do!

connect to: rc2014.ddns.net on TCP port: 2014

  2. We're discussing about this industrial #Zilog #Z80 server machine. Two 8" floppy drives, no HDD. Someone of you know this machine?
Hold or exchange against another rare machine?

  3. I'm in a most excellent mood! A long long time ago, I got a fancy #MiSTer #FPGA. For those unaware, this device emulates everything from old #Zilog #Z80 systems to low end PCs and arcade machine - or rather, it doesn't exactly emulate them - it sort of becomes the old legacy hardware itself, meaning you'll have nearly clock cycle perfect emulation.

Anyhoo, I also got a #MT32pi for it, which is a thing that emulates old #Roland #MIDI hardware that nobody back in the day could afford. Many of the early DOS titles support this, and it's an absolute joy to listen to. There's a whole sad story to the MT32-Pi project, but that's for another day.

Sadly, it never worked in my setup - until today! I had it for years and years but finally I put in the effort - a lot of measuring and some soldering and now it actually works! Delicious music in old #DOS games! I thought the thing was for sure fried, so I couldn't be happier!

Have an excellent weekend everyone! 🙂

  9. Dear internet,

Does anyone know of a cycle accurate #zilog #ez80 simulator? I'm looking for something that exposes all of the pins in the emulator as well, that is I need to be able to sample the address and data lines from other code in a cycle accurate way to test-drive some peripherals.

I found a core written for the TI calculators, but it seems very tied to that use, and I don't know how accurate it is either. Maybe it is very good, if anyone knows please let me know!

  10. Our #Kneiser #M100 is packed and ready for exhibition at #RetroGamesCon in the old riding hall #Soltau on Saturday, September 6th. So, if you happen to be there, feel free to come and check it out at our table. I'll definitely try to get a chess program for it so that the incredible 4 MHz #Z80 power can do some serious computing.

  16. Most of the work for the #RC2014 machine based on the #Zilog higher integrated #Z180 CPU is done. The two 90° card connectors are final work for tomorrow afternoon. All parts were available from my private stock, except the 74AHCT139 for the RAM card. The circuits are, as ever, highly quality from pcb4diy.

  22. Progress!
    I've got a basic #emulator working for my #Pat80 #homebrew #zilog #z80 #computer !
This should ease the os development as I can test the changes without having to: remove the #eeprom from the computer (without bending the pins), program it in the #TL866 programmer, place it again on the computer (aligning pins correctly), test, notice it's not working and have no idea why, start debugging with the logic probe on the #address and #data pins, swear in arcane languages... 😅

  25. As previously mentioned, I managed to get my hands on another #Enterprise64 from the mid 80s. I disassembled it yesterday and made sure it was in working order. Nothing noteworthy, apart from cleaning it up and snipping a couple of mm's of the super thin wire tape for the keyboard, which is notorious for breaking. Also, a 1MB memory expansion was added, which is is insane for a system that was born with 64K. It's now technically an #Enterprise1088 :-)

Developed in the UK, it comes with IS-BASIC, a word processor, has 256 colors, stereo sound, runs CP/M and reads FAT floppy disks. Pretty cool for a 40 year old system, eh?

This is my third Enterprise machine. Currently two are working - my original (S/N 000828) which was gifted to me back when my dad started importing them, and this latest one (S/N 030490). The third one is unfortunately dead at the moment.

  26. Some 40 years ago, my dad took a leap and decided to import and resell the #Enterprise64 microcomputer from the United Kingdom. This was indeed the era of the "micro", and lots of options were available like the #Spectrum, #Amstrad, #NewBrain, #Lynx and numerous others. Unfortunately competition was hard, and the Enterprise was delayed for almost a year. Eventually they went bankrupt and all stock was exported to Eastern Europe where it got a second life among some very hard core enthusiasts. Very few were actually sold in Denmark - I would assume less then a hundred - and today I managed to get my hands on the third one in my collection. Inherited from his dad, the seller had no idea what to use this for. It's very much a special item, and very far from the mainstream like the Commodore 64. It is nevertheless a fascinating machine, sporting a #Zilog #Z80 with support for up to 2MB RAM. The operating system also contained IS-BASIC, and was a bliss to work with.

  28. I finished reading Michael S. Malone's book "The Intel Trinity" the same day one of its subjects, Intel's Gordon Moore, died at 94. Coincidence.

This book is about Robert Noyce & Gordon Moore, founders of Intel plus early employee & future CEO Andy Grove.

It's partly about the technology and silicon valley, but mostly about the people and I'd recommend it for that.
