  1. #Stereotyping shouldn’t still be happening in #book #publishing, but it’s in a children’s novel published by Penguin House UK. Why didn’t the publisher set up vetting by an #authenticity #reader? Because the book has a celebrity author? Pull it from stores! theguardian.com/food/2024/nov/ H/T @ayeshachari.

  2. Every once in a while I still come across a lore-reductionist (they call themselves "lore-strict") person on #FFXIV and they always have some ridiculous comment about what you can't do in #FFXIVRP.

This quote from Lee Boucher really puts into perspective the idiocy represented by lore-strictness:

The real rant here is that sometimes I feel like we've hit peak nit-pick/plot-hole/realism connoisseur #media criticism that we can't ever trust [narratives] and, obviously, writers to have thought it all through. We get so locked into the idea of "#lore" that we forget how little lore matters in the real world. And I don't mean that metaphysically; I mean like...if the IRL lore is that bears will kill you, but you stumble onto a docile one in the woods, Earth didn't break #canon! [...] You can't ask, "Will this bear attack me?" and expect anyone to know unless they're besties with that bear because bears are like humans, some are cool, and some are a-holes.

So, play your Ishgardian noble Au Ra with an elezen name without hesitation and worry. You are not breaking "lore" by being an exception. That's some bullshit. 💙 ✊

Tangentially related, but a friend of mine and I got to talking, and we quickly realized how applying the concept of lore-strictness to #IRL amounts to #stereotyping and #bigotry. And that's interesting to me, especially considering who tends to be the most likely to call themselves "lore-strict." 🤔

...and on the note of the Israel thing, let's move on to #antisemitism, and #racsim in general.

There is a VERY serious problem, in this country, of people #stereotyping others based entirely on demographics. Too many people in the #US do not understand that you cannot make any assumption about a person based on #SkinColor alone, let alone the complex relationship between #Jewish people, who have suffered 1000s of years of #persecution, and #Israel, a country they see as a last safe-haven in events like the #holocaust.

Tossing aside the stark contrast in expanding protections for #marginalized groups, as opposed to totally ending them, the way people in prominent positions speak plays a lot into this.

Harris's talk of unity, looking past our differences, of accepting each other as #Americans and #Human beings, is exactly what we need a leader to do right now. Contrast with her opponents saying despicable things like "Jews will be to blame".

  4. Gender Stereotyping in the Labor Market d.repec.org/n?u=RePEc:iab:iabd
"… within STEM occupations as well as in supervisory and leadership positions that the majority of jobs is male-stereotyped.…indicate a positive association between #gender #stereotyping and occupational gender segregation, suggesting that gender stereotyping in job ads might contribute to the underrepresentation of women in certain occupations and occupational positions"

  5. A series exploring how the rise of #fetishization of #EastAsian #culture, specifically in terms of #appropriation & #stereotyping, across #MSM & within #WesternCivilizations has impacted the modern #AsianAmerican’s experiences.

When considering the audience, it’s no surprise that many within the #WhiteMajority of #NorthAmerica, lack the necessary #education when investing in the appropriation of #POC lifestyles.

  6. Swedes at breakfast. They are showing their Swedishness by wearing navy and white, with a touch of cream.

I, on the other hand, am wearing navy and...

    Oh.

  7. If Apu in the Simpsons is no longer okay (and very understandably so), how come Fat Tony is? Why is stereotyping Italians okay?

Personally, I have no problem with Fat Tony, the Sopranos, etc. etc., but I'd like to understand the general point of view here.

  8. CW: food (diary toot)

Being Swedish to the point of stereotyping; rave about Lion's Head (gigantic meatballs) and then look up if it's possible to boil potatoes in a rice cooker.

  9. A Positive Reaction to Refugees

More than 650 refugees from Iraq, Syria and Turkey arrived in a small town in Australia. A series of surveys found residents became even positive towards them over time.

“On average, the greatest change was among people who initially had reservations: those who started out negative became more positive.”

  10. @Piousunyn @volcano @7sleepersmusic @therobburgessshow Whatever parallels to reality there may in #stereotypes, they are often false. Regardless, by definition #stereotyping is unfair, and potentially harmful to human life and society

  11. More on why when visualising data about #inequalities it is better to leave viewers with questions and doubts rather than giving them a false sense of certainty in incorrect conclusions.

  13. We need to make #inequalities visible. Yet, if not done carefully, raising awareness of inequality can actually make it worse. Recent research reveals that deficit thinking effect can be triggered from ‘neutral’ charts and graphs, so many people will misinterpret data on social disparities as evidence for blaming those differences on the characteristics of the people being visualized.

  14. @Sheril This photo taken in #Galway #Ireland c. 1913 and yes, in colour, not retouched by two #French women photographers #Mespoulet & #Mignon working for philanthropist, #AlbertKahn for his #ArchivesOfThePlanet shows an #Irish boy in skirt to fool the #Fairies into not taking him away (because back then #girls weren't worth as much and it was okay if they were taken by fairies)--so there's another bit of #gender #stereotyping...copyright #AlbertKahnMuseum, #Paris 😍
