I thought telling people I was gay was supposed to be the hardest part of all this.
Turns out it’s just the beginning, and not even the hardest part of being gay, at least for me.

Phenomenally good and interesting biographical interview with #TigerDevore – strong recommendation!
https://theoutwordsarchive.org/interview/tiger-devore/Tiger is one of the very first #intersex people to come out in the US and was absolutely crucial for building the intersex movement. #ComingOut
He was indirectly involved in the establishment of the legendary #ISNA (Intersex Society of North America), the first intersex organization in the US. #IntersexHistory #HermStories1/3

I told him that we needed to talk. I told him I wanted to go for a drive.
He knew what that meant, or he should have. Nobody asks for a car ride and a park bench when the news is good. You don’t drag someone to neutral territory to tell them you got a raise.

I’ve seen it referred to as a hall pass. His was Lynda Carter, aka Wonder Woman. Mine? Reba. You know, fiery red head. Reba McEntire, the country music singer.
We laughed about it. It cost nothing. Wonder Woman was never ringing our doorbell, and as far as I knew, neither was anybody else.
I didn’t know I’d already told the truth. I just hadn’t caught up to it yet.

It felt secretive and illicit and wrong, she said, and they had to hide. A later boyfriend found out and ended it. She didn't think of herself as gay — she dated boys too, and mostly because the language wasn't there to think with.

Four weeks ago, I told my traditional Indian parents that I am gay. This was a long time coming; I just needed to build up the courage to say it, and I finally had. I thought the worst day would be that one — saying it, out loud, finally. In retrospect, it now feels like it was almost the easy part.

CW: Transition, family
We have an intermittent "family call" with my mother and sister and Jalan's father and stepmother.
The first one since I started my transition begins soon.
Father-in-law won't be there, just as well. And everybody else has been supportive. But it's still big.

I didn’t have an answer then. Nobody was asking me to have one yet — not out loud, anyway. But I felt the pressure of it everywhere: the expectation, somewhere down the line, to know. To choose. To stop wondering and start declaring.

CW: GenderQuest, brief cancer mention, coming out to family (mostly +)
Brother and I also had an honest-to-god phone call yesterday, which went very well!
He knows he was an ass and unsafe to me almost all of my life, but has consciously been working on his character arc in the last four years or so (relating to first cancer diagnosis).

CW: GenderQuest, coming out to family (mostly +)
Came out last night to in-laws. They were the last and most potentially problematic of the people I interact with regularly and feel the need to contact individually.
I created a group chat with FIL (right-wing asshole), MIL (right-wing, but not asshole), and Jalan, and came out.
Jalan had a follow-up already prepped. Including this:
"If you have questions, you're welcome to ask me. But treating [Linda] with respect and kindness is the price of admission into my life."
I love her....
MIL's response was positive, just asking for room for grace and getting name and pronouns correct, especially early on..
FIL's was brief and neutral. But Jalan really hadn't left any room for them to be negative in response.
So family has ranged from a couple neutral responses to a lot of overwhelmingly positive ones. Winning!
(This also left me room to finish changing over profiles on different social media, since everyone who will see them who needs an individual message has one.)
-
I don’t remember how I started. I just remember that at some point the words were out, sitting in the room with us, and I couldn’t take them back.
She didn’t say anything for a second. The TV kept talking to no one.
Then: “Are you okay? Do you want to talk? I’m here for you, you know.”

CW: GenderQuest, family acceptance (+++)
Worth noting, he also out-and-out apologized for making it harder for me to be 'me' when we were growing up.
The whole response was better than I could have hoped.
-
CW: GenderQuest, family acceptance (+++)
Today, my brother was the last of the immediately family I came out to.
I didn't know what to expect. He's always been two-thirds an asshole, and bullied me a lot when we were kids, even teens.
His response was beautiful.
I am loved.

Mom's response started with:
"Wow! Better late than never, for sure." She then recalled an occurrence in my childhood that left her bewildered at the time, but....
Cousin's started with:
"I dont think I could love you more than I do right now"

#Goodtoknow: Facts zum Coming-Out
🏳️🌈🙏🏳️⚧️ #LGBTQ #comingout -
CW: re: Thread, kink, bisexuality, self-acceptance, love, personal growth, US pol
I began this thread with acknowledging that I was very messily online about my feelings around #ComingOut later in life as #bisexual, as #queer, because I wanted to leave something for someone else, anyone else, who might resonate with it. I was also doing it for my closeted self who wasn't able to grapple with those feelings.
I feel like this thread has been for my past self who was out but who was conflicted about her place in the #LGBTQ community, who was struggling with internalized #biphobia an a lot of #shame, and who was grieving who and what she could have been. I want to tell her it's okay. It's okay for her to feel all the confusion and grief and shame. I want to tell her that, even though she can't see it, there is a way through it all. It doesn't look like what she thinks it does. It's going to involve her shedding some maladaptive ways of thinking to deepen her understanding of love and of herself.

CW: re: Thread, kink, bisexuality, self-acceptance, love, personal growth
Right now, I can't bring myself to go back and reread some of my previous threads angsting about my coming out as #bisexual because I imagine that they're too cringe. At some point, I will probably be able to accept and reread them, but not right now. But so many of you read them! And so many of you offered #compassion, whether that was in commiserating about the #biphobia and #panphobia within so many #LGBTQ spaces or in offering a kind of gentle and generous acceptance of my messy and conflicted feelings and my #grief over who I could have been in a more accepting world. I am so thankful that Mastodon offered me a space to work through those feelings and connect with people who responded with thoughtfulness and patience and kindness. I don't know that there's any other online space where I could have found that kind of response. So, if you ever interacted with any of my posts about my #ComingOut as #bi later in life, thank you!

Christin-----
