  1. CW: Transition, family

We have an intermittent "family call" with my mother and sister and Jalan's father and stepmother.

The first one since I started my transition begins soon.

Father-in-law won't be there, just as well. And everybody else has been supportive. But it's still big.

  7. My dad's retort to me mentioning I'm non-binary -- not once, but twice. No amount of frank conversations, education, nor patience will open the minds of those who are unwilling to be opened. (This is a man that has a master's degree, served in the Army, and worked as a cop til age 79.) My only regret is putting up with the BS of someone who openly mocks my identities. Who needed me to worship him as a hero, while I stayed closeted.

  9. I didn’t have an answer then. Nobody was asking me to have one yet — not out loud, anyway. But I felt the pressure of it everywhere: the expectation, somewhere down the line, to know. To choose. To stop wondering and start declaring.

  11. CW: GenderQuest, brief cancer mention, coming out to family (mostly +)

Brother and I also had an honest-to-god phone call yesterday, which went very well!

He knows he was an ass and unsafe to me almost all of my life, but has consciously been working on his character arc in the last four years or so (relating to first cancer diagnosis).

  13. CW: GenderQuest, coming out to family (mostly +)

Came out last night to in-laws. They were the last and most potentially problematic of the people I interact with regularly and feel the need to contact individually.

I created a group chat with FIL (right-wing asshole), MIL (right-wing, but not asshole), and Jalan, and came out.

Jalan had a follow-up already prepped. Including this:

"If you have questions, you're welcome to ask me. But treating [Linda] with respect and kindness is the price of admission into my life."

    I love her....

MIL's response was positive, just asking for room for grace and getting name and pronouns correct, especially early on..

FIL's was brief and neutral. But Jalan really hadn't left any room for them to be negative in response.

So family has ranged from a couple neutral responses to a lot of overwhelmingly positive ones. Winning!

(This also left me room to finish changing over profiles on different social media, since everyone who will see them who needs an individual message has one.)

  15. I don’t remember how I started. I just remember that at some point the words were out, sitting in the room with us, and I couldn’t take them back.
She didn’t say anything for a second. The TV kept talking to no one.
Then: “Are you okay? Do you want to talk? I’m here for you, you know.”

Today, my brother was the last of the immediately family I came out to.

I didn't know what to expect. He's always been two-thirds an asshole, and bullied me a lot when we were kids, even teens.

    His response was beautiful.

    I am loved.

  26. It's okay to just try things, and you can change your mind. You don't have to figure it all out first in order to make a perfect, one time coming out event.

While keeping the wellbeing of yourself and others in mind, go try it out and see if it fits you. It'll be okay.

  28. I don't recall the year exactly, it would've been circa 2007. But in doing routine maintenance on my mother's devices and accounts, I saw an email she had written to my grandparents, and while the date is bound to be off a tiny bit I will never forget the opening words of the body: “Our worst fears have been confirmed."

I had confirmed for my mother that I was gay and that Ben and I were more than roommates.

  40. Well, I had to out myself to my dad due to a situation that developed. I expected him to be much more difficult about that, much like my mom was, but it was fine for him and he said I should live my life how I want to live it. And yes, he said he noticed my breasts, even though I tried to hide it.

I honestly want to cry tears of joy right now. I expected the worst and what I got is love. It couldn't have gone any better honestly.
