Somehow I missed this when the story broke a few weeks ago: Atomwaffen Division co-founder Brandon Russell has been given a 20-year prison sentence for plotting to attack the Baltimore power grid with his girlfriend (h/t @MusiqueNow). He had been found guilty back in February, but sentencing was only earlier this month.

They picked Baltimore in part because the girlfriend, Sarah Beth Clendaniel, also a neo-nazi, was from the area, but mostly because it's a city with a large Black population. Clendaniel recently got an 18-year sentence for her part in the plot.

This comprehensive history of Niger during the colonial period is a work based on primary research which attempts an overall appraisal of the colonial past.

Dr Fuglestad questions the assumption that the colonial conquest constituted a clear break in African history. He traces the main trends of the colonial period back to their origins in the pre-colonial past. He also demonstrates that the power of colonial officials was less effective than is generally thought and that, though French colonial rule was the single most important factor in shaping the present-day societies of Niger, it was still only one of the many contributing factors.

What is a terrorist act? The authors argue that experts on the subject hold imperialist views biased in favor of the status quo or government perspectives. The biases are largely a product of the “terrorism industry” that has grown up in response to government funding, which includes networks of government agencies, think tanks, and private security firms. The mass media also have a big role in promoting terrorist stereotypes, often missing a balanced perspective on a “terrorist” act. The authors also discuss the historical uses of stereotyping threatening groups.
