Over time, in addition to being functional, they also acquired important cultural symbolism. So, later buildings retained the appearance of dǒugǒng, but without the substance. Like these increasingly fake dǒugǒng at the Forbidden City. An example of #skeuomorphism.

Now that we know that Play was acquired by Apple, it would be probably stupid to work on anything too generic that is highly likely to appear in the next iterations of Interface Builder. But I still want to play with PaintCode’s area of operation in SwiftUI/Metal medium, maybe some specific UI design workflows, and especially custom UI components and styling (skeuomorphism-philia ❤️).

A skeumorphic bubble vector I created in Inkscape.
I added a version with a black background just in case the transparent version doesn't display properly. I notice some social media platforms don't support transparency for some odd reason and it's making me paranoid.

I used to wonder sometimes why cigarette filters always have that light brown colour with white spots, so that they look like McDonald's sesame seed buns.
Today, I finally dug into it. They're not sesame seed buns. They supposed to look like cork. Apparently in the early days, cigarettes had cork tips, instead of the fibre filters they have now. Cork-tipped cigarettes were high-end, so when they moved to the fibre filters, they they wanted to keep the appearance of cork.
It's a great example of "#skeuomorphism": when new technologies try to mimic the look and feel of familiar old technologies.
Classic examples of skeuomorphism: the "save" icon in a computer app looks like a floppy disc. Or the shutter sound in your phone's camera sounds like film camera motor winder... a sound that nobody has heard in decades.
