MockOS is a totally real operating system that exists within the reality that is my own mind. Most of the symbols I used were salvaged from publicdomainvectors.org, a few were made by me. The background image was taken by me on a Nikon D3500 DSLR. All assets were compiled in Inkscape.

One thing internet activists don't tell you about people hosting their own websites is that that website is still linked to a single point of failure: the person who owns it. For example, I've seen various #YouTube mirror sites just... die without prior notice and vanish without a trace. Like, several of these.

A more recent example seems to be frutigeraeroarchive.org since every device I've tried to connect to it on gives a connection timeout. Oh, there goes a bunch of important history, media, and resources on #FrutigerAero because the single person manning the site just... vanished or forgot/couldn't pay the hosting fee. Fun! Just because a site isn't run by a company doesn't mean its safe or won't vanish without warning.

The name combines Adrian Frutiger’s typeface 𝐹𝑟𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑔𝑒𝑟 and Microsoft Windows Vista’s design language 𝐴𝑒𝑟𝑜. Vista’s default font, Segoe UI, was directly inspired by Frutiger, linking the two references that give this aesthetic its name.
