  1. @xan Yes, I went through a couple of displays to find one that does not scale up to full size, blurring out the image.

I used to have a 21-inch MegaPixel Color Display (CRT) but gave it to the late Tony Diaz and settled, after the aforementioned search for a non-scaling LCD, on the 19-inch NEC MultiSync 1990SXp (1280x1024 native). It centers the NeXT display on the LCD.

  2. Anyone know if NeXT 68k computers (non-Turbo models) can use 30-pin RAM SIMMS with higher-density chips?

ie, instead of 4MB sticks with 8x4mbit chips, 4MB sticks with 2x16mbit chips.

The latter are sold for Macs of the same vintage, but I don't know if NeXT computers like them.

  3. @keyboards
Love this. Gave mine away 1.5 years ago. Was my first UNIX workstation 😍 #NeXTStation

  4. Nachdem leider das Netzteil rechtzeitig zur Führung kaputtgegangen war, läuft die #NeXTstation wieder. Es hat den MOSFET zerrissen. #datArena #vclab #vintagecomputing

  5. Thinking of NEXTSTEP this morning...I'd guess many aren't aware of the unusual color display arrangement.

The NeXTstation, which was the first "affordable" color solution for NEXTSTEP, has a 16-bit framebuffer, but instead of rendering the desktop in 65,536 colors (as per Windows or Mac hardware, say), it rendered in 12-bit color with 4-bits of alpha channel (transparency).

That means it had a palette of 4096 colors, with all colors available at once on the display (not like, say, the Amiga or Apple IIgs with a 4096 color palette, but video modes with a small subset of those colors available (yes, yes, HAM mode excluded). Additionally, anything on the screen had 16 levels of opacity available.

It's interesting to see in person, on the actual hardware (especially on a good LCD display). With dithering, it looks very close to 24-bit truecolor.

(The NeXT Dimension color board for the Cube allowed 24-bit color with 8-bits alpha, but that was not so frequently used -- less so than most NeXT hardware even...)

But that's not nearly the weirdest that NEXTSTEP-capable hardware got, when it came to color video display...

  6. Does anybody know if there are technical drawings of the #NeXTstation case (and other devices, too) available?

  7. I love that Steve Jobs chose to include a video of a colonoscopy being performed as part of the NEXTTIME (NeXT's answer to QuickTime video) install CD's demo videos.

And there was silly Microsoft over there, putting lame old Weezer and Edie Brickell music videos on their Windows 95 CD lol!

  8. Looking through old files this weekend, stumbled across a flier for the 1990 introduction of the NeXTstation. Those were some great academic discounts ($2,000 discount from the $4,995 base model list price)!

Clearly enough to tempt, since I kept the flier. But not enough for me to pull the trigger: I stuck with a borrowed ‘030 NeXTcube for a while longer (until the 33MHz turbo models were introduced).

  9. I've been playing with the #WindowMaker version of #Debian recently, just to remember the old, good #NextSTEP, #OpenSTEP era. I used to have a #NeXTStation but I sold it locally for $300 just before I left US for Greece. It could probably fetch thousands on eBay, but I didn't want to deal with shipping such a heavy item.

Ah, I miss the old #SiliconValley. Back when there was actually room to innovate in ways that were revolutionary, and not just additive.

  10. ⬛📦 Our NeXTstation Turbo lives! 😍 The screen needs some repair because it displays a very dark image with some lines at the top, but the system boots up nicely. An impressive beast from 1990 with 32 MB of RAM!

  11. 🔎⬛ The elegant (albeit dusty 🌬️) interior of the NeXTstation... its 2 GB WD disk is now safely archived, preserving memories of some "journalistic" fonts we found on it, such as TimesDELO-Roman.font ("Delo", a prominent national daily newspaper in Slovenia, was the source from which we obtained the computer.) 🐘
