Catch of the Day: Greetings from the Forefather of the Web! 🧊

    Hey Retro Fans!
Hold on to your hats because last night we had a visit from absolute IT royalty on our server. Our bouncer logged this magical combination:

OmniWeb 3.1rc1 on a NeXTSTEP system!

Let that sink in for a moment. NeXTSTEP is the operating system Steve Jobs developed after he (temporarily) left Apple. And even more importantly: It was exactly such a NeXT system (the famous NeXTcube) on which Tim Berners-Lee programmed the very first web server and the first web browser in the world at CERN in 1990!

The fact that someone today is using NeXTSTEP and the legendary OmniWeb browser (which was developed exclusively for this platform in 1995) to find their way onto the modern internet via FrogFind is a goosebump moment for any tech historian. This isn't just retro—this is time travel to the architectural roots of Mac OS X and the World Wide Web itself.

A reverent toast to that magnificent black box cube!
    Your FrogFind Team 🐸

  2. Ah, Lestrade. Watson tells me that your new AI toy Claudi has solved the case of the missing Ethernet cable. Oh, indeed? The Duke of Timberland?

So sorry, Lestrade, but Claudi is wrong. Timberland couldn't have done it, as is obvious to anyone who looks at the actual case with open eyes. Afraid I can't explain further at this moment, terribly busy. But why don't you pay a visit to the Duke's daughter. Ask her about her NeXTcube. Yes, Lestrade, her NeXTcube. Find someone who can explain it to you.

And get rid of Claudi. You don't really need any additional source of blunder and incompetence at the Yard, do you Lestrade?

  3. RE: norden.social/@harzretro/11573

  4. Well, I'm still in the process of making a Browser based admin interface for the #Previous #emulator to manage its configuration files. It originally was developed for #NeXTcube mini project, but it can be used for any #Linux based installation of Previous.

    Q: Commercial or Free
    A: Commercial

Q: First UNIX like OS you used:
A: NeXTSTEP, a local company went out of business and I invested the money I made from my software into a barely used NeXTcube because I've seen one at a trade show and fell in love.

Q: What was your first PC and when?
A: AMD Am386 SX25 in 1990 for the computer science class in school to code in Turbo Pascal.
I payed half and my parents payed the other half.

  16. @tuparev And today I wanted to publish my first set consisting of NeXTcube, NeXT MegaPixel Display, and NeXT SoundBox, all in 1:2 scale. Unfortunately, I'm still stuck in test printing for parts of the display. These ribs are a real challenge! 😟

  21. NO... I was just about to test my circuit boards for the #NeXTcube mini, which I received a few weeks ago. And what should I say? All connections go to a GPIO header, which is located on the underside of the board. And I forgot to flip it around in PCB layout. Now all the connections are on the wrong pins. 🙈

  22. Just soldered the 40 pin connector on my little PCB. I don't think the solder joints look too bad, do you?

  24. Today I got my batch of #PCB's from #JLCPCB for the front panel LEDs of my #NeXTcube mini.

Turns out: I mistakenly swapped the top and bottom layer. 🤪

  25. I had another part of my #NeXTcube mini printed with #resin by #JLCPCB as a test.

The difference in quality is unbelievable! I should stop doing that. Otherwise I won't even want to print with filament anymore. 🙈

  27. I think I found a clean solution to assemble the two LEDs at the front grill of my #NeXTcube mini. It's a tiny custom #PCB holding the LEDs with two JST sockets, which will be wired up directly to the #RaspberryPi #GPIO ports.

    #3DPrint #3DPrinting #RetroComputing #VintageComputing #NextComputer

  28. Well, it doesn't look that good. Fortunately I had aborted very early. Now a bit cleaning for the next try.

  29. This was a fast one. Last night I designed a small 2 layer #GPIO stacking header board for the #RaspberryPi that will be used in my #NeXTcube mini to provide a power and activity LED. It's in production at #JLCPCB already.

  30. @13pt8plus Something for the background:

I'm building a #NeXTcube mini (1:2). NeXT had these sound boxes (see image). So, I want install a HiFiBerry AMP into this box. This amp normally should be plugged onto the GPIO port. You get it? So, the plugs and sockets shout be not too big and ideally round shaped.

  31. Thinking of NEXTSTEP this morning...I'd guess many aren't aware of the unusual color display arrangement.

The NeXTstation, which was the first "affordable" color solution for NEXTSTEP, has a 16-bit framebuffer, but instead of rendering the desktop in 65,536 colors (as per Windows or Mac hardware, say), it rendered in 12-bit color with 4-bits of alpha channel (transparency).

That means it had a palette of 4096 colors, with all colors available at once on the display (not like, say, the Amiga or Apple IIgs with a 4096 color palette, but video modes with a small subset of those colors available (yes, yes, HAM mode excluded). Additionally, anything on the screen had 16 levels of opacity available.

It's interesting to see in person, on the actual hardware (especially on a good LCD display). With dithering, it looks very close to 24-bit truecolor.

(The NeXT Dimension color board for the Cube allowed 24-bit color with 8-bits alpha, but that was not so frequently used -- less so than most NeXT hardware even...)

But that's not nearly the weirdest that NEXTSTEP-capable hardware got, when it came to color video display...

  32. The very first test prints of three parts of my #NeXT #MegaPixel display. And oh boy… the middle part (that one with the ribs) is a nightmare for #FDM printing! Horrible post processing getting rid of the support material! This is wh. y I'm thinking of buying a resin printer. The customers will appreciate it too. Because the parts will have WAY BETTER surface quality!

  34. Oh wow! I was curious, so I uploaded all parts of the #NeXT #MegaPixel Display for #SLA printing to #JLC3DP. Just to see how much the resin print would cost. All parts, printed with black resin including surface treatment, add up to about 225 EUR! For one(!) display!

It's funny that #FDM printing is even more expensive, with poorer surface quality.

The parts for the #NeXTcube mini cost a similar amount. I'm starting to have my doubts as to whether anyone will even buy it
