  1. Parrotfish of the Great Barrier Reef

Michelle Brayshaw's artwork showing the differing body colours of twenty-two initial and terminal Parrotfish species on the Great Barrier Reef. The colour differences between the terminal males (top photo) and the initial phase (bottom photo) can be clearly seen.

  2. Guardians of the reef: How #parrotfish promote coral health phys.org/news/2024-09-guardian

Dear enemy effects in the stoplight parrotfish, Sparisoma viride esajournals.onlinelibrary.wile

"They have strong, beak-like teeth that allow them to spend up to 90% of the day munching on microscopic organisms that grow on and within the calcium carbonate structures created by #corals. As the #fish remove coral skeletons, they create space for new corals to grow and produce white sand as their digestive waste."

  3. Dancing yeti #crabs, morphing #cuttlefish, other stories from the #DeepSea npr.org/2024/07/24/1198910431/

As a kid, Sabrina Imbler loved the #ocean. They'd swim, snorkel, following around #parrotfish in the water. Later, they tried to learn everything they could about these brightly colored tropical #fish, like how they produce a mucus bubble to sleep in or how they keep #CoralReefs healthy... In 2022, they released a collection of essays called How Far The Light Reaches: A Life In Ten Sea Creatures.

  4. The world’s fourth mass #CoralBleaching is underway, but well-connected #reefs may have a better chance to recover theconversation.com/the-worlds

"#Corals remain healthier and recover faster if they are surrounded by #fish that eat different types of #seaweed, such as #parrotfish, #surgeonfish and #rabbitfish. #SeaCucumbers also are important reef partners. They feed on #bacteria and other organic materials in ocean sediments, cleaning up the area around #CoralReefs."

  5. Some #Caribbean #parrotfishes find benthic #CyanobacterialMats particularly tasty oceanbites.org/some-caribbean-

Preferential consumption of benthic cyanobacterial mats by Caribbean parrotfishes link.springer.com/article/10.1

"this research shows that #parrotfish grazing may help control the overgrowth of #benthic #cyanobacteria mats in #reefs, providing further support that parrotfishes are critical components of #reef ecosystems"

  11. How some #fish learned to hide behind others to hunt theconversation.com/how-some-f

Predatory #trumpetfish conceal themselves from their prey by swimming alongside other fish cell.com/current-biology/fullt

"#Divers regularly report seeing trumpetfish swimming closely alongside a larger typically less-threatening fish, such as a #parrotfish or #surgeonfish... people assumed this #behaviour allowed trumpetfish to approach closer to their #prey unseen, but this had never been tested –until now."

  12. #Amaroks amok, #parrotfish squawking "Polly wants a worm," #kelpies hiding in the seaweed - life at the exotic-fauna sanctuary was starting to spin out of control. The donors were starting to complain.

  13. Bumphead, Stoplight and Scribbleface. "The #Parrotfish Gang" is what they call themselves. Creepy little bastards is what they are. They were the children of a marine biologist once, but something went horribly wrong.

Aside from the #SchoolShooting, May had never heard of Marjory Stoneman Douglas.

She was surprised to learn she'd been born in MN. Her mother was a concert #Violinist. Hearing her dad read "The Song of #Hiawatha" reduced her to tears & was her earliest memory.

A South Florida #Conservationist, Marj wrote in her seminal #Book, The #Everglades (1947):

"[There are] #Gardens of branching corals... [with] angelfish & #PARROTFISH... Shell creatures are everywhere."

  19. Will walked out to the point. He stood on the shore and watched Grip out by the reef. His head bobbed up every so often, then he dove down again. After a few minutes, Grip spotted him & waved. He then turned and began swimming back.
Will fully enjoyed watching him emerge from the ocean, his black hair slicked back.
"I got some #parrotfish!" he said, holding up a string of fish.
"Let's take 'em back to Mama Kane's," Will said. "While they're cooking, we can…"
    "You are *insatiable*!"

Angsana Ihuru in the North Male Atoll boasts one of the finest snorkelling house reefs to be found anywhere. Easily accessible from the beach, the 360 degree reef encircles the island and teems with marine life.

All footage was taken in a single snorkel around the island on a beautifully calm day. Keep your eyes peeled for surgeonfish, butterfly fish, parrotfish, regal angelfish, longfin bannerfish, reef sharks, eagle ray, giant clams, oriental sweetlips, lobster, starfish, hawksbill turtle, clown anemonefish, octopus, jackfish, barracuda, and titan triggerfish!

  21. “There are so many weird and wonderful ocean-dwelling creatures, but this particular parrotfish species stands alone with its bizarre overbite, formidable size, prominent forehead, and tendency to travel in large groups.”

In our latest #OneGreatShot, photographer Josh Blank captures a school of bumpheads baring their impressive chompers.
