  1. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🐌🥬 Banana #slugs (genus Ariolimax) move only 16.5 cm per minute across their slime, yet serve as important #forest decomposers in California’s #Redwood National Park and #GoldenGate National Recreation Area.

A close-up #video shows one munching greens using its radula, a tongue-like part armed with roughly 25,000 tiny teeth. The #PacificNorthwest #mollusks are also hermaphrodites and #California’s official state slug.

  2. Plebecula giramica is a #species of air-breathing #landSnail, a #terrestrial #pulmonate #gastropod #mollusk in the family #Geomitridae. This species is #endemic to #Madeira, Portugal. Its natural #habitats are temperate #forests and temperate #grassland. It is threatened by #habitatLoss.

  3. I had to terminate this invasive juvenile black slug. It's in an area that's part of an ongoing rewilding community, environmental project. We remove them from areas where we're trying to protect native slugs & native habitat. Taildropper slugs are a native slug species at threat here on Vancouver Island & it's important to do our best to protect their habitats.

Even though these are called black slugs, they have a wide colour range & most found here exhibit this brown colour, when young.
Black slugs can lay up to 150 eggs at a time. They reproduce very quickly, which causes their population to grow beyond manageable in a short time period, if left to breed.
By comparison, native slugs lay only 20-30 eggs & are slower to reproduce.

  4. My brother and partner were visiting Marcos island in Florida on their sail kayaking adventure and took a picture of this very cute mollusk

    “I’m looking at you!”

It looks like what I call a cone shell but I’m not sure.

    Update from comment:

“It is a Florida Fighting Conch. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strombus

  5. 🌊🐚 Scientists teamed up with YouTuber Ze Frank to let the public name a bizarre new species of deep-sea #chiton found over 5,000 meters down.

The winner? Ferreiraella populi – the "chiton of the people." The strange #mollusk lives exclusively on sunken wood and carries a tiny community of worms near its tail.

  6. Trilobite lovers, meet the blue green chiton! Though it resembles some trilobites, this critter is actually a #mollusk that inhabits waters around Australia & New Zealand. Growing about 1.4 in (3.5 cm) long, this nocturnal critter can roll into a ball when threatened or disturbed.

  7. Shell design carved from limestone containing fossilized shells. Nice. From a well at a residence that is now Les Musées Gadagne, Lyon, France. #limestone #shells #bivalves #stones #mollusc #mollusk #architecture #art #gadagne #lyon #france #travel

  8. Found a tiny (approx 3 mm) snail cruising around on a cantaloupe in my garden. Possibly an invasive graceful awlsnail (Allopeas gracile) but waiting for an expert to weigh in on iNaturalist. Currently no "Research Grade" observations in Pennsylvania. #snail #mollusk #mollusc #nature #inaturalist #invasive #malacology #pennsylvania #macrophotography inaturalist.org/observations/3

  9. A very cool study using #clumped #isotope measurements in #oyster shells from the Early #Cretaceous showing high and variable #seasonality in response to climate changes caused by atmospheric #CO2 shifts. #mollusk shells again demonstrated as useful climate archives!

  10. Today I went to see the rarest snails in the world. These critically endangered mollusks exist only in a little pond in Banff. Since it's a sulphur hot spring, the whole area smells of snail farts.

In other news, I sold another poem.

  11. During my trip to Prince Edward Island last week I learned that some restaurants don't sever the adductor muscles on oysters. Apparently they want customers to be confident that the oysters are actually from that shell. Not sure how widespread that practice is, but one person said it was a "French thing." #oysters #bivalve #mollusk #food #restaurant #pei #PrinceEdwardIsland
