A great and detailed #study about early #medieval #migration events to #England from 400–1100 AD. The study concludes that, contrary to the #traditional #narrative, there was no abrupt migration event, but rather that England was settled #continuously. This is supported by #oxygen #isotope #analysis of human #teeth.

The #copper #isotope #Cu-64 plays an important role in medicine: it is used in imaging processes and also shows potential for #cancer therapy. However, it does not occur naturally and must be produced artificially

study uses ancient plant to decode #Earth's #climate history
the study focuses on #horsetails — hollow-stemmed #plants that have thrived on Earth for more than 400 million years. The team’s findings reveal that #water traveling through these plants undergoes such intense natural #distillation that its #oxygen #isotope ratios resemble those found in meteorites or in extraterrestrial materials.https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/1103877

"KEY POINTS
• Basalts and pebbly to cobbly sandstones have been dredged from the Fairway Ridge, Coral Sea
• Dating of the rocks and interpretation of magnetic anomalies allow mapping of major geological units across North Zealandia
• This work completes offshore reconnaissance geological mapping of the entire 5 million square km Zealandia continent…”

For atomic nuclei, I understand that there is a stability benefit for having even numbers of protons or neutrons, and I understand why having too few neutrons would be destabilizing due to charge-charge repulsion, but why does having too *high* a number of neutrons also lead to nuclear instability? #science #chemistry #nuclear #isotope

Proud to be on this publication in GCA by Barbora Krizova et al. We show #clumped #isotope reordering in #Cretaceous rudist bivalves is location-specific. Understanding burial history is essential for selecting shell material for #paleoclimate #reconstructions. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0016703725004193

The #clumped #isotope paleo temperature proxy is one of the most reliable means of temperature reconstruction in #geology. This new study shows that it can be applied equally on various carbonate minerals (calcite, aragonite, dolomite, witherite and siderite).

Check out our latest #preprint in which we use a combination of #clumped and #oxygen #isotope measurements to reconstruct extreme summer temperatures experienced by #fossil #rudist bivalves from the Late #Cretaceous in Oman. All feedback is welcome!

I remember Jeremy McCormack presenting this nice #zinc #isotope dataset @ EGU this year showing how #Miocene sharks had diverse roles in the marine foodweb. Great study, glad to see it found a nice home in EPSL!

This phenomenal study by Alexandre Pohl and colleagues investigates in a very comprehensive way how estimates of the #oxygen #isotope composition of seawater bias our #climate reconstructions, one of the most important uncertainties in #paleoclimate research.

A very cool study using #clumped #isotope measurements in #oyster shells from the Early #Cretaceous showing high and variable #seasonality in response to climate changes caused by atmospheric #CO2 shifts. #mollusk shells again demonstrated as useful climate archives!
