  1. Australia's largest native slug. Up to 15cm! Not this one, though, this was more like 10-12cm. You'll never guess what we whacky Australians call them... (see alt text and/or links in next toot)

  6. `Unique phenomena are important in history but are difficult to study because they resist categorization and are therefore unpredictable. To examine the timing and circumstances of unique evolutionary events, we identified traits that evolved only once in the highly diverse phylum Mollusca as well as unique first occurrences of traits that evolved repeatedly since.`

  21. A mollusc themed repeat pattern for your nature loving Valentine featuring three of my #linocut heart cockles (Corculum cardissa). Perfect for your favourite malachologist, beach comber or shell collector.

Corculum cardissa, the heart cockle, is a species of marine bivalve mollusc in the family Cardiidae found in the Indo-Pacific. If viewed from the side, it looks like a heart. 🧵

  22. everyone has heard of the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus, a joke made up for a poorly-thought out survey of what 1990s people believed on the internet, but somehow nobody has heard of the Mangrove Jingle Shell Clam, a real and amazing animal I learned about from @KateShaw

hopefully Dr. Dan Killam @dantheclamman can provide us all with more information on this animal.

  30. Found a tiny (approx 3 mm) snail cruising around on a cantaloupe in my garden. Possibly an invasive graceful awlsnail (Allopeas gracile) but waiting for an expert to weigh in on iNaturalist. 31. Something you won’t often see: Roman Snail (aka the veritable edible escargot) crawling along the North Downs Way. Enormous thing and apparently colonies are now resident in that small area. Never seen such a big snail in the wild before.
